To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK F. PROVAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marion, in the county of Lamoure and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WhipJ-lolders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in whip holders, and has for its object to provide a holder of the character specified, comprising means for engaging the doubletree of the leading team or other fixed support, and a holder proper for the whip hinged to the said. means for swinging movement, together with means operable from a distance for swinging the holder, and other means for returning the holder to upright position, the holder having means for clamping a whip.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side View of the improved holder with the support in section, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the support, Fig. 3 is a side view of the socket detached, and Fig. a is a section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a support 1, which may be the douhletree of a wagon, or any other suitable object, and the improved holder is especially designed for use with the leading team in multi-horse teams, and the holder is designed to he clamped to the douhletree of the leading team.

The holder proper comprises a socket 2, having its bottom closed, and provided at one side of the bottom with a transverse bearing 3, the said bearing being integral with the socket or secured thereto in any desired manner. The upper end of the socket is beaded, as shown at 4, in the usual manner, and the said holder is hinged to a clamp to be described.

The clamp is of approximately U-shape, comprising a body 5 and depending arms 6 and 7. The body is enlarged laterally intermediate its ends, and is provided with an opening 8 as shown, at the center of the body. On each side of the opening 8, the body is provided with a bearing 9, and the said bearings are in alinement.

The bearing 3 of the socket is received between the bearings 9, and a hinge or pivot pin 10 is passed through the registering bearings for hinging the socket to the clamp. The clamp is engaged with the doubletree or other fixed support, as shown in Fig. 1 the arms 6 and 7 de1 3ending upon oppositesides of the doubletrce, and a set screw 11 is threaded through the arm 6 for engaging the doubletree to secure the clamp other as indicated at 13, and are riveted to the said arm as indicated at M. A pulley 15 is .journaled between the arms of the stirrup on a pin 1.6, and a flexible member 17, as for instance, a cord or wire, passes over the pulley, one end of the cord being connected to an eye 18 on the socket near the upper end thereof.

The socket is arranged to swing in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, and the socket may be swung in such direction by means of the rope or cord 1'7. The socket is arranged with the pulley or roller 15 in front of the doubletrce, and the free end of the cord or rope 17 extends to the drivers seat in the wagon or to the saddle, when the driver is riding one of the wheel horses. By means or the cord, the driver may swing the upper end of the socket toward the lead horses to cause the whip, which is inserted in the socket in the usual manner, to strike the leaders. The socket is returned to its upright position by means of a coil spring 19, the said spring being connected at one end to an eye 20 on the clamp at the junction of the arm 6 with the body, and at the other end to an eye 21 on a reinforcing plate 22, near the upper end of the socket and at the opposite side from the eye 18. A set screw 23 is threaded through the socket at the reinforcing plate into engagement with the whip when the whip is in the socket. The set screw locks the whip in the socket so that it cannot become displaced when the socket is being swung in the manner described.

In operation, the whip is placed in the socket, and the set screw 23 is turned to clamp the whip tightly in the socket. The free end of the cord 18 may be attached to the seat of the wagon or to the saddle, and when the driver wishes to whip the lead horses, he pulls the cord 17 to swing the upper end of the socket and the whip forwardly. As soon as the traction on the cord is relaxed, the spring 19 will return the socket to original position. It will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 that the lower end of the socket rests in the opening 8 of the plate, on the upper face of the doubletree or other fixed support. lVhen not in use, the entire device may be removed from the doubletree.

I claim l. A device of the character specified, comprising a socket provided at its bottom with a transverse bearing sleeve, a clamp for engaging a doubletree or other fixed support, said clamp comprising a body having a central opening and depending arms at the end of the body, the body having a bearing at each side 01 the opening, said bearings being in alinement and being spaced to receive the. bearing sleeve of the socket between the same, a hinge or pivot pin engag ing the alined bearing to hinge the socket to the body, a set screw threaded through one of the arms of the body for engaging the doubletree or other support, a stirrup secured to the outer face of the other arm, a pulley journaled between the arms of the stirrup, a flexible member passing over the pulley and connected at one end to the socket near the top thereof, a spring connected to the socket at the opposite side from the cord and to the body for normally holding the socket in vertical position, said socket being received in the opening of the body at its lower end, and means for clamping a whip in the socket.

A device of the character specified, comprising a clamp for engaging a doubletree or other fixed support, said clamp comprising a body adapted to extend transversely of the doubletree and an arm at each end of the body for engaging the adjacent edge of the doubletree, a set screw threaded through one of the arms, a pulley journaled on the outer face of the other arm near the free end thereof, said body having an opening at approximately its center, a whip socket having its lower end received within the opening and hinged to the body at the side adjacent to the pulley, a flexible member connected at one end to the socket near its upper end and passing over the pulley, a spring arranged between the socket and the clamp at the opposite side of the flexible member, said spring normally holding the socket in vertical position, and means for clamping the whip in the socket.

3. A device of the character specified, comprising a clamp having means for releasably engaging a doubletree or the like, a pulley jcurnaled on the clamp at one end thereof, a whip holder hinged at its lower end to the clamp, the hinge being adjacent to the pulley for permitting the holder to swing toward and from the pulley, a spring normally holding the holder in upright position, and cord connected with the holder and passing over the pulley for swinging the said holder.
