DOUBLE STEP FOR WAGON-BODIES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Endeavor, in the county of Marquette and.
State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Double Step for Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steps for use in connection with wagon bodies, its object being to provide a device of this character having two steps placed at difi'erent elevations but out of vertical alinement, the said steps having means whereby they are prevented from swinging laterally when subjected to a weight.
A further object is to provide a step of this character which can be folded so as to occupy the minimum space when not in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the lnvention has been shown.-
In said drawings :Figure l is a front elevation of the device, the adjoining portion of the wagon body to which it is connected, being shown bydotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section and showing the device folded.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 3 designates a yoke having hooked bearing extensions or terminals 2 and 4 so shaped as to straddle the upper edge of one side of a wagon body and extending from the extension 2 is'a hanger 1. The lower end of the hanger is extended forward as shown at 5 and has a step 6 secured thereon, this step being spaced a short distance from the hanger 1 as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. A rounded projection 7 is struck forward from the hanger 1 at an intermediate point. An auxiliary" hanger 8 is pivotally connected to the hanger 1 close to the lower end thereof and has an extension 9 at the free end thereof and which is disposed at right angles thereto, this extension serving to support a second or auxiliary step 10. The hanger 8 is designed, when swung downward, to move against that portion 0 the extension 5 located between the step 6 and the hanger 1, the auxiliary hanger 8 being thus held in an inclined position. Step 10 is so arranged upon the hanger 8 as to extend parallel with the step 6 when the parts are thus located although the two steps will be out of vertical alinement. It will be noted that the step 6 is supported below the extension 2 while the step 10, when lowered, is disposed below the hooked portion 4;. A depresslon 11 is struck into the hanger 8 at an intermediate point and is for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
When it is desired to use the device, the
hooked portion 4 is placed in engagement with the upper edge of one side of the wagon body and the extension 2 also rests on said edge so that the hanger 1 will be supported 1n a position substantially at right angles to the upper edge of the wagon body. The supplemental hanger 8 is then swung down- Wardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and when the weight of a person is placed on the lower step 10 it will be trans m1tted to the hooked portion 4; and the device wlll thus be prevented from tilting or swinging laterally as would be the case should the step 10 be disposed out of vertical alinement with the hooked portion 4. occur. When the device is not in use the supplemental hanger 8 can be swung upwardly and the extension 7 snapped into the depression 11 as shown in Fig. 3, thus supporting the step 10 in an elevated position.
It will be seen that the device which has been described is very simple in construction and 'can be readily attached to a wagon body, it being advantageous because, when not in use, the lower step can be raised out of the way. It is further desirable because even though the two steps are disposed out of vertical alinement, the application of a weight to either of them will not result in the tilting of the device relative to the wagon body. Instead the same will be held firmly under all such conditions.
Various changes can of course be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is A device of the class described including a portion for detachably engaging a Wagon body, a hanger depending from said portion and fixed relative thereto, a step upon the hanger, a supplemental hanger pivotally connected to the first mentioned hanger and movable in a plane parallel with the body engaging portion, and a step upon the supplemental hanger, one of said hangers having a depression and the other hanger hav- 10 ing a rounded projection adapted to snap into the depression to hold the pivoted hanger elevated out of normal position.
