SWING.
Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
Application filed February 12, 1914. Serial No. 818,305.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL STOHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conneaut, in the county of Ashtabula, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in swings, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that the occupant or occupants thereof can operate the same with little exertion.
A further objectv of the invention is to connect the seat supporting bars and platform supporting rods by bowed leaf springs which will serve to aid in operating the swing.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig, 3 is a sectional view 011 line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 44 of Fig. 1.
The frame 1 consists of side bars 2 and end bars 3, the same being supported by the legs 4, the lower ends of which are engaged with the blocks 5 to prevent the said legs from becoming embedded in the ground.
The side bars 2 are provided near each of their ends with recesses 6,'the bases of which are beveled. as at 7, 'so that the clips 8 will be permitted to swing in an easy manner when engaged therein, said clips serving to support the upper ends of the bars 9 which have pivotally supported thereby the seat 10.
.The lower ends of'the bars 9 are-pivotally connected to the rods 11 which also are pivotally engaged by the side bars 12 of the platform 13.
Outwardly bowed leaf springs 13 are provided and have their upper ends secured to the bars 9 at points slightly below the seats 10, the lower ends of said springs being secured to the outer ends of the side bars 12 of the platform 13, saidsprings serving to aid in operating the swing in an obvious manner.
Mounted centrally of the platform 13 is a socket 14 which is detachably engaged by the standard 15 which supports the auxiliary seats 16 which may be used when desired.
What is claimed is 1. A swing comprising a leg supported frame, the side bars of which are provided with recesses, clips engaging the bases of the recesses, bars having their upper ends connected to the clips, seats supported by the bars, and a platform including side bars, the ends of which are pivotally connected to the lower ends of the bars.
2. A swingcomprising a leg supported frame. the said frame including side bars and end bars and the side bars each having spaced depressions therein in which knife edges are formed, flat metallic clips mounted for oscillation on said knife edges, bars secured to the clips and depending therefrom, and a platform pivotally mounted on and supported by the lower ends of said bars, the contacting surfaces of the clips and the knife edges being sufiicient to maintain the bars in a vertical position against a considerable force.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
VIRGIL STOHLER.
