FREDERICK YUNCK, OF BRYAN, OHIO.
CONVERTIBLE SHELVING AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,916, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed. Tune 21, 1897. Serial No. 641,643. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK YUNOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryan,
, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Shelving and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to convertible shelving and tables, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction disclosed in an application for Letters Patent filed by me January 11, 1897, Serial No. 618,7l6, said improvements consisting, first, in novel means for connecting the adjusting mechanism to the fixed shelf, and, secondly, in novel means for connecting the fixed shelf to the supporting-uprights.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the fixed shelf, shown Fig.4 is. a side elevation of the same detached, and Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of said shelf.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 denotes any suitable base, and 2 uprights rising therefrom, the latter being provided with cross-braces 3. .The upper and lower side bars 4 5 are pivoted intermediate their length, the former to the ends of the fixed shelf 6 at 7 and the latter to depending angle-irons 8, fastened to the sides of the fixed shelf, thus locating the pivotal points of the side bars 5 below those of the side bars 4. The pivoted shelves 9 are connected to the side bars 4 5 above and below the fixed shelf 6 by pivoting their front ends directly to the side bars 4, while their rear ends carry brackets 10, which project downward in a manner similar to the angle-irons 8 of the fixed shelf 6 and are pivoted to the side bars 5, as shown. Diagonal braces 11 may, if desired, be fixed to the side bars 5 for the purpose of stiffening the structure. Each angle-iron 8 of the fixed shelf 6 has formed integral therewith a socket 12, the same projecting beneath said fixed shelf and open at both ends, though formed with an annular shoulder-13 at its inner end, all as shown in Fig. 5. Removably located within and projecting somewhat beyond the outer end of each socket 12 is a centrally-apertured plug 14, formed, preferably, of wood. Pivoted to the upper side bars 4 at 15 are the links 16, through the slots of which and through the apertured plugs 14 freely passes a transverse shaft 17, extending lengthwise completely across and beneath the fixed shelf 6, as shown in Fig. 3. This shaft is suitably headed at 18 at one end and is screw-threaded at its other end to receive a thumb-nut 19, as shown. If desired, suitable washers 20 may be interposed between the headed end'18, the thumb-nut 19, and the links 16. Bolted or otherwise secured to the under side of the fixed shelf 6 are the brackets 21, the same terminating in sockets 22, adapted'to engage over the upper recessed ends of the uprights 2 to afford a firm support to the structure.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noticed that the upper pivoted shelf 9 is formed with its longitudinal sides convex, while the rest of the shelves, including the fixed shelf 6, are formed with one longitudinal side convex and the other side concave, as shown in Fig. 3. This construction affords a somewhatgreater area when the shelves are in thesame horizontal plane, as well as adding to the artistic appearance of the structure in all positions.
From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be understood to be as follows: As described in my application above referred to, the shelves may be retained in any adjusted position by means of the shaft 17 and thumb-nut 19; but by employin g the sockets 12 and plugs 14, against the latter of which the links 16 are adapted to be jammed by the thumb-nut 19, I provide very efiectually against any accidental slipping of said links, such as might occur were the contact-surfaces metal, as the latter would become highly polished by the constant friction.
Moreover, should the contact-surfaces of preferably formed of wood, I wish it to be understood that I contemplate the use of any other suitable substance possessing the non-slipping propertysuch, for instance, as semivulcanized rubber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a supportingframe, side bars, and shelves pivoted to said side bars, of a fixed intermediate shelf, to which said side bars are pivoted intermediate their length, means for connecting said shelf to the supporting-frame, sockets fixed to the under side of said shelf, apertured plugs in said sockets projecting beyond the outer edges of the same, a transverse shaft passing through said plugs and sockets, links pivoted to the side bars and engaged by said shaft, and means on said shaft for clamping said links in any adjusted position against said plugs, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a supportingframe, side bars, and shelves pivoted to said side bars, of a fixed intermediate shelf, to which said side bars are pivoted intermediate their length, means for connecting said shelf to the supporting-frame, sockets fixed to the under side of said shelf and having annular shoulders at their inner ends, removable apertured plugs in said sockets limited in their movement thereinto by said annular shoulders and projecting beyond the outer edge of said sockets, a transverse shaft passing through said plugs and sockets, links pivoted to the side bars and engaged by said shaft, and means on said shaft for clamping said links in any adjusted position against said plugs, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a supportingframe embodying vertical uprights, sidc bars, and shelves pivoted to said side bars, of a fixed intermediate shelf to which said side bars are pivoted, a transverse shaft passing beneath the fixed shelf and connected thereto by suitable means and projecting between the vertical uprights of the supporting-frame, links pivoted to the side bars and engaged by said shaft, means on said shaft for clamping said links in any adjusted position, and brackets attached to the fixed shelf and carrying sockets at their outer ends adapted to engage with the upper ends of said uprights, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
