To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, Oman. P. VROOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iiinneus, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Swing, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to swings of that character mounted upon stationary bases and its Objectis to provide-a device of this character which is of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, which is attractive in appearance and which can be easily transorted.

A still further object is to provide a swing designed to be actuated by pressure against a platform disposed below and between the seats of the swing.

A still further object is to provide a novel arrangement of parts whereby the swing can be readily actuated by pressure of the foot longitudinally of the platform.

A still further object is to so mount the swing upon its supporting base as to secure combined swinging and rocking movements of the parts thereby -greatly adding to the comfort and enjoyment of the occupant.

Iith. these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l, 1 are the side strips of the base, the same being connected by a central cross strip 2 provided with suitable braces 3. Mounted upon these side strips are two pairs of rockers 4, each rocker being attached at its center to the base by means of a coiled spring 5 whereby the rockers are normally maintained in predetermined relation with the base. The rockers of each pair are connected by a tubular cross bar 6 reinforced by braces 7 and the ends of these cross bars extend upwardly and inwardly to form standards 8 having knobs 9 at their upper ends. These standards are maintained in fixed relation to the rockers by means of braces 10 which are fastened to them and to the end braces of the rockers. Each of the standards 8 is formed near its upper end with an opening 11 extending therethrough and the openings of each pair of standards receive outwardly turned ends 12 of bails 13. These bails are suspended and designed to swing between standards 8 and the end braces l2 thereof are preferably held against displacement by cotter pins 14 or in any other preferred manner.

The intermediate or transversely extending portions 15 of the bails extend through loops or eyes 16 arranged upon the end portions of side bars 17. The ends of these side bars are connected by a cross strip 18 to form a rigid frame and supported upon the side bars at the ends thereof are pairs of seats 19 ofany preferred constructions and preferably disposed so that the occupants thereof will face each other. As shown in the drawing each of these seats consists 'of angle irons 20 bent to form the legs and arms of the chair and the leg portions thereof being connected by side strips 2l on which the slats 24 oonstituting the seat are secured. Inclined strips 23 are fastened to the side strips 21 and to the bars 17 and have slats 24 fastened between them to constitute the backs of the chairs. The side portions of the chairs are preferably reinforced by diagonal braces 25 connected to the end strips 18. Although this construction is preferred it is to be understood that the chairs may be made in any desired manner provided the same are disposed entirely upon the frame consisting of the bars 17 and 18.

Each of the standards 8 is provided at a point below the openings 11 with an opening 26 which, however, does not extend entirely through the standards, and which is designed to receive the hooked end 27 of a hanger 28. The hangers of each pair have their lower ends extended through the end portions of a cross bar 29. These hangers are preferably fastened within the cross bar by means of nuts 30. The two cross bars are arranged below and out of contact with the side bars 17 and support longitudinal strips 31 which are arranged between the side bars 17 and have transverse slats 32 fastened to them and constituting the movable platform of the swing.

As a result of the construction herein described it will be understood that when a person occupying one of the chairs pushes longitudinally against the platform 32 the frame supporting the chairs will be shifted longitudinally in an opposite direction because the hangers supporting said frame and the platform respectively are of different lengths and suspended at different points. This longitudinal or swinging movement of the chairs will cause the standardsS to swing out of their upright positions and the rockers 4 will be actuated upon the strips l, thereby producing a combined swinging and rocking movement. By disposing the parts in the relation shown and described very little effort is necessary to operate the swing and the springs 5 constitute efficient means for returning the parts to their normal positions after they have been shifted therefrom.

It will be seen that the swing can be readily taken apart and set up and by reason of its comparative lightness can be readily removed from or taken into a house. As the rockers work upon the base strips l` the swinO can be set up in a residence and there will be no danger of the same injuring the floor coverings.

What is claimed is:

l. A device of the character described comprising standards mounted to rock, hangers pivotally connected to and suspended from the standards and oscillatory frames pivotally connected to and suspended from the hangers and disposed in eccentric relation to each other.

2. A device of the character described comprising standards disposed to rock, an oscillatory seat supporting frame suspended between and supported by the standards, an oscillatory platform hangers pivotally connected to the platform and the standards, said platform being movable independently of the frame.

3. A device of the character described coinprising rockers, supports rigidly connected thereto and extending therefrom, and independently movable oscillatory frames suspendedfrom the supports said frames being at all times in horizontal planes and being I movable along eccentric lines.

4. The combination with rockers disposed in pairs; of rigid connections between the rockers of each pair, supports extending from the rockers, bails pivotally connected to each pair of supports,l a frame pivotally supported by the bails, hangers pivotally connected to the supports and below the bails, a frame connected to the hangers and extending under the first mentioned frame, and a platform upcn the frame of the hangers and extending into the first mentioned frame, said platform and its frame being movable in an arc eccentric with the arc of movement of the other frame.

5. A device of the character described comprising standards mounted to rock, a seat supporting frame extending from the standards and disposed to oscillate independently of the movement of the standards, and a platform suspended from the standardsand disposed to oscillate independently of the movement of the standards, said platform and frame being movable along eccentric lines.

6. A device of the character described comprising rockers supports extending therefrom and rigidly connected thereto, a seat carrying frame suspended from the supports and mounted to oscillate independently of the movement of the supports, a platform,`

and hangers connected. to the platform and supports and disposed to oscillate independently of the supports, said platform and frame being movable along eccentric lines.

7. A device of the character described comprising a seat carrying frame, a platform, separate hangers for supporting the frame and platform respectively, said frame and platform being disposed to move independently along eccentric lines, anda rocking support for the hangers.
