SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,875, dated September 11, 1900.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL WATsoN JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in chairs,the same having particular reference to certain improvements upon the construction of chair described, illustrated, and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 633,087, granted me September 12, 1899.

The main objects of my present invention are to provide a cheap and simple construction of chair embodying all of the characteristics and advantages of the construction of chair above referred to and in addition the advantages arising from a revolving chair, wherein the back and seat are wholly independent one from the other, so that the seat may be rotated at a horizontal angle with relation to the back and also tilted so that the chair `as a whole will accommodate most any position a body may assume.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a chair 'embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. S is a view similar to Fig. 2, certain parts being reversed and to this extentillustrating a modified form of chair. Figs. 4 and 5 are details, respectively, of the depending arc-shaped blocks or castings and the similarly-shaped rests, the same being more particularly referred to hereinafter.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The chair-f rame comprises the usual back A, back legs a, with which said back Ais rigid, the front legs b, and connecting-stiles ZJ.

To the inner sides of the opposite side Stiles b' are secured the opposite segmentally-curved preferably cast-metal rests C, the same in this instance having inwardly-disposed iianges c and stop-pins c. Above these rests and between the side stilcs is located a cross-piece E, at the center of/which may be located a depending plain or threaded socket e, and at the ends of which cross-piece E may be secured depending segmentally-curved rockercastings F, having angularly-disposed securing-flanges f and curved bearing-surfaces f', which rest upon the anges c. Openings f2 may be formed in the castings F to receive the stop-pins c' heretofore mentioned, and thus limit the rocking or vertical rotation of the said castings and the cross-piece carried thereby.

D designates a seat, the same being located above the cross-piece and independent of the same and also of the chair-back A. The under side of the seat may have secured thereto a depending plain or threaded pin or post d, the same eitherswiveling or threading, as the case may be, in the socket c.

It will be seen that a chair thus constructed includes all of the numerous advantages as set out at considerable length in the patent hereinbefore referred to and in addition possesses the advantages of a revolving chair.

In the inverted or modified form of chair which I have also illustrated it will be observed that the cross-piece Gis iiXedly mounted on the opposite side stiles of the chairframe, and from the center of the cross-piece there rises the plain or threaded post g. A movable cross-piece I-I is located above the lower lixed cross-piece G and by means of a socket h, projecting through its center, is swiveled or threaded on the post g. Rests J, similar to those before described, are secured to the ends of the upper cross-piece H, the iianges j being outwardly extended to receive the bearing portions or surfaces t' of the rocker-castings I, which latter are secured to the seat D.

It will be apparent that While the patent herein referred to provides for a construction of chair wherein the seat is capable of tilting at an angle to the immovable and independent back, yet to secure this adjustment the occupant always sits with his back squarely against the back of the chair. The present improvement, however, goes a step further. It still includes all of the advantages of the independent rigid back and the tilting seat of IOO the patent referred to and in addition provides means for revolving such a seat in connection with such a back. As a result the seat may be rotated to a desired point or angle with relation to the back, so as, for instance, to bring the side of the occupant opposite the chair-back, and then the seat tilted, so as to conveniently support the side in the same manner as the back was heretofore supported by the back of the chair.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a chairframe,havL

ing a back rigid therewith; of a combined rocking and revolving seat mounted in and supported by the frame and independent of the back.

2. The combination with a chairframahaving a back rigid therewith; of opposite depending arc-.shaped supports; opposite rests for the same; a seat independent of the back supported by said arc-shaped supports; and means for revolubly supporting said seat.

3. The combination with a chair-frame hav; ing a back rigid therewith; and opposite rests secured to the side rails thereof; of a crosspiece having a central socket; arc-shaped supports depending from the cross-piece and a superimposed seat revolubly mounted on the cross-piece and independent of the back.

4. The combination with a chair-frame having a back rigid therewith; and opposite rests secured to the side rails thereof; of a crosspiece having a central socket; arc-shaped supports depending from the cross-piece and supported by the rests; and a seat, provided with a central depending post entering said socket, said seat being independent of the back.
