Description
Jan. 29, 1952 H M HABEL 2,583,563
HANGER Filed Jan. 30, 1948 Patented Jan. 29, 1952 UNITED STATE sr PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to hangers or racks for the support of such items as shoes and moreover, towels, hats and various other articles of clothing which frequently become displaced from their supported positions on vehicles such as airplanes, ships and trains.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a clamp-type hanger wherein the clamp elements will firmly grip an article interposed therebetween.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp-type hanger which includes a pair of swingable clamp elements on different axes, which when brought together and under the weight influence of an article interposed therebetween will firmly grip the article and hold the same against accidental displacement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger including a pair of clamp members which can be readily separated when an article is to be removed from supported position.
These and various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the hanger.
Figure 2 is a vertical section and side elevational view of the hanger shown gripping a shoe, which is partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the hanger.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevational view showing a panel of hangers.
Referring to the drawings, numeral 5 denotes the inside of a door, or perhaps a wall, or a panel 6, as shown in Figure 4 attached to a door or wall 1.
If the hanger is used for shoes, the hangers are preferably arranged in pairs, as shown in Figure 4 and each hanger preferably includes a rectangular shaped frame in which. the clamp-like hanger, forming the present invention is mounted and which is generally referred to by numeral 9.
The frame 8 includes vertical side members I0, II) and connecting upper and lower members II, II, the corners of the frame having openings for receiving nails or screws I2, driven into the supporting structure 5 or 6.
The clamp assembly includes an upper clamp jaw I3 and a lower clamp jaw I4, the upper clamp jaw I3 having a downwardly and outwardly curved tail portion I5, the lower por- 1 claim. (o1. :zii-89)` tion of which has an outwardly disposed and apertured ear I6 through which a pin I1 is disposed, this pin having its ends projected through openings 21 at the lower portions of cleats I8, I 8, these cleats being nailed or otherwise secured to the side portions I!) of the frame 8. The lower end of the tail portion I5 has a downwardly projecting finger I9 against which an arm 2l] depending from the jaw I4 engages, as shown in Figure 2, the jaw I4 having a rearwardly projecting ear 2l, apertured to receive a supporting pin 22, which has its ends disposed into openings 28 in the upper portions of the cleats I8 and it is preferable that a coiled spring 23 be convoluted on the pin 22 toward one side of the jaw I4, with its upper end engaging the jaw I4, while its lower end abuts one of the cleats I8, to the end that the jaw I4 is urged downwardly, with the arm 20 pressing against the linger I9 to maintain the jaw I3 a rotated pulley in a clockwise direction, viewing the structure in Figure 2.
The opposed faces of the jaws I3,`.I4 have felt or cushioned face members 24, 25 to protect the article against which they engage.
To facilitate the lifting of the jaw I3 and separation of the jaws to remove or place an article, the jaw I3 has an upstanding finger engageable protuberance 29.
Figure 2 shows a shoe A with its back portion gripped between the jaws I3, I4.
It will here be observed that the jaws I3, I4 are on different axes and in rotating, the arcs described by the jaws I3, I4 have a differentiation or intersection of travel, with the purpose in view that these two jaws will lock together or against a supported article and assume the outwardly disposed position as shown in Figure 2, the arm 20 in pressing against the nger I 9 having a tendency to rotate the jaw I3 on its axis I'I while the jaw I4 is itself rotating on an axis eccentric to that of the jaw I3, which will result in a camming action of the jaws and a locking eiect between themselves incident to a clamping action against the article being supported.
This locking and' clamping action can be broken, by simply pressing backwardly on the protuberance 29, to the end that the shoe or other article can be readily removed from between the jaws I3, I4.
It can be seen that such a hanger is denitely suitable for use on moving vehicles such as airplanes, ships, boats as well as automobiles.
While the foregoing description sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understoodthat numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A hanger comprising a support, a pair of clamp elements, vertically spaced members on the support, upon which the clamp elements are pivoted, the lower clamp element having spring means connected to one of said members to cause downward movement of said element, the upper clamp invention, what is element being provided with a leg, swingable on the other member carried by the support and provided with a nger, the lower clamp element being provided with a leg engaging the ngerland adapted to rock the upper clamp element down-V 4 wardly against the lower clamp element when a load is imposed upon the lower clamp element.
