EXTENSION-PEDAL FOR PIANOS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RHOTEN F. Lo rsrnron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Pedals for Pianos, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to means to adjust the elevation of the pedal, and thereby adapt it for use by children or persons of small stature; and the object is to provide simple means to adjust the elevation of the pedals on a piano so that children of different sizes can use the same with ease. I aocomplish said object by means of the device herein described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the base of a piano with the pedals projecting therefrom, my improved extension-pedal being in place on the left pedal. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved pedal removed from the pedal of the piano and the rear end turned to the front for better illustration.

In the drawings, A represents the baseboard of a piano, from the bottom of which the pedals B, O, and D project. On the pedal B my extension-pedal is mounted.

My extension-pedal is composed of the following parts, combined and arranged as here-- in described and shown in the drawings, viz: The base E, having a recess F formed therein to chamber the pedal of the piano, the walls of the recess being formed to closely fit around the pedal when in place in the recess. On the top of the base and adjacent to the recess I pivot a lid G, (shown in its closed position in Fig. l and in its open position in Fig. 2.) Projecting upwardly from the base is the upright pedal-support H, having enlarged base portion H, in the bottom of which is a recess H, adapted to receive the edge of the lid when closed and hold the same firmly on the pedal in the recess F. Adj ustably mounted on the upright pedal-support is the auxiliary pedal I, having downwardly-projecting socket I secured thereto, adapted to receive the upright pedal-support. The opening in the socket continues up and. through the auxiliary pedal, providing clearance for the passage therethrough of the upright support. The upper end of this support projects through the auxiliary pedal and forms a stop thereon'to limit the movement 5 5 of the foot on' the pedal in the direction of the piano and prevents its contacting with the front thereof. In the side of said socket I provide a screw-threaded opening for the re ception of the adjusting thumb-screw J, by means of which the auxiliary pedal can be adjusted as to elevation on the upright support. In the bottom of the recess F, I place a flexible pad K, (shown in dotted lines on Fig. 2,) of suitable material to permit the reception into the recess of pedals of different thicknesses and permit the closing thereover of the lid G, the flexible pad serving also to hold the pedal firmly therein and prevent the pedal from rattling therein, which would take place when the thickness of the pedal was less than the opening between the bottom of the recess and the lid and be objectionable for that reason.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An extension-pedal for pianos, comprising a base having therein a recess adapted to receive the pedal of the piano; a lid pivoted to said base and adapted to be turned over the pedal when placed therein and hold the pedal firmly in the recess; an upright on said base; an auxiliary pedal, having a downwardly-proj ecting socket to receive the upright and rest thereon, and an adjusting hand-screw in said socket.
