lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS LEE HERRESHOFF, OF NE/V YORK, N. Y.
PHOTOGRAPHIC-PRINTING FRAME.
Application filed September 4, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
T0 aU 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS LEE PIERRES- norr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to frames for holding the negative and paper during the printing of photographs and has for its object to provide such frames with a simple and easily operated locking device, which may also be used as a handle for handling said frame.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a face view of my improved frame; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section of the removable back taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, 1 represents the frame proper, which may be made of metal, wood, or any other suitable material and is provided. with the customary 'annular liange 2 arranged to support the glass 3.
4 represents the removable back prefer'- ably provided on its one surface with a facing of felt or similar material 5 and arranged to engage the negative and the paper to hold same in position in the frame in the usual manner.
6 is a handle rotatablyV mounted in a bushing 7 secured to the back 4 and provided with oppositely extending lugs 8. Latches 9 are pivotally secured at 10 to each of said lugs 8 and extend in opposite directions through guides 11 secured to the back 4 at proper points. The ends of the latches 9 are turned upwardly and back as indicated at 12 and are arranged to enter recesses 13 formed in the frame 1. It is to be understood that the portions 12 of the latches 9 form resilient means adapted to engage the upper walls of the recesses 13.
In operation, when it is desired to use the frame for printing purposes the handle 6 is rotated and with it the lugs S, so as to withdraw the latches 9 from the recesses 13. The back 4 may now be easily removed by means of the handle G so as to permit the negative and the paper to be readily placed in position in the frame. After this has been done the back 4 is returned to position and the handle 6 rotated in the opposite direction to return the end portions 12 of the latches 9 into the recesses 13. It will thus be seen that with my improved locking means an entire releasing and locking operation may be performed with one hand only, leaving the other hand free to hold the frame or to manipulate the negative and paper, as may be found necessary.
Heretofore, it has been found compulsory, in order to secure a satisfactory result, to usc both hands in the releasing and re-locking of the back. The handle G of my improved construction, as will be readily seen, may be used as a convenient means for handling the frame and may also be used as a support for supporting the frame in an inclined position during the printing.
It is to be distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to the use of two latches 9 as more or less may be used if found convenient. Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, as defined in the claim.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the kind described, a rectangular frame provided with oppositely located recesses, a glass plate supported in said frame, a rigid rectangular back fitted within said frame with its inner surface in engagement with said plate and provided with a socket having a reduced portion, said back being bodily removable from said frame, a handle rotatably mounted in said socket and arranged to manipulate said back as a unit, a removable washer of larger diameter than the reduced portion of said socket secured to said handle whereby removal of said handle from said socket is prevented, projections carried bv said handle to rotate therewith and extending in opposite directions therefrom, normally alining slides mounted on the outer surface of said back so as to be guided by said outer surface and having their inner ends pivoted direct-ly to said projections, said slides having their outer ends bent upon themselves to form resilient latches arranged to be moved into and out of said recesses as the handle 1s rotated whereby the back s pressed against my hand n the presence of two subscribing said plate or released for removal from said witnesses.
frame and guides secured to said back for FRANCIS LEE HERRESHOFF maintaining Said slides n engagement with the outer surface thereof and for preventing Vtnesses:
any substantial lateral movement thereof. JOHN A. KEHLENBECK,
In testlmony whereof I have hereunto set FRED A. KLEIN.
