PIANO-FOOTBOARD HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. GUERTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Footboard Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in piano foot board holders, the object of the invention being to provide improved means of this character which enable the foot board to be readily removed and replaced, which holds the foot board tightly in position so as to exclude the dust and dirt from the piano, and which may be attached to any upright piano in use in place of the means employed for the purpose.

WVith this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l, is a View partly in section and partly in end elevation of a piano, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is an enlarged view in section showing the foot board holding device, and Fig. 3, is a bottom plan view of Fi 2.

1 represents the body of the piano, and 2 the ordinary foot board which is provided at its lower edge with dowel pins 3 to engage in sockets 1, and hold the bottom of the foot board against movement. The upper end of the foot board is held against a bar 5 by means of my improved device which will now be described in detail.

My improved device comprises an arm 6, which is, throughout the greater portion of its length, positioned at an angle to the bottom face 7 of the piano key board bottom, so as to prevent rubbing the same, but.

adj acent its extreme outer end, it is provided with an opening 8 for the reception of a screw 9, which is screwed into the part 7, so as to pivotally support arm 6, and allow the latter to be swung to either side.

The free end of arm 6 is provided with an enlargement 10, having a cylindrical opening 11 therethrough. In this opening 11, a plunger 12 is mounted to move, and is provided at its free end with a cushion 13 of rubber or other suitable material to engage foot board 2.

A coiled spring 14 is located in opening 10, bears at one end against an internal annular shoulder 15 in said opening, and at its other end against the plunger 12 to hold the plunger tightly against the foot board. A bent rod 16 is screwed into the plunger 12, projects through the opening 10, and is bent at its free end at right angles, forming a finger hold 17 to enable the plunger 12 to be withdrawn.

The operation is as follows: If it is desired to remove the foot board 2, it is simply necessary to grasp finger hold 17, and pull back plunger 12, and then throw the arm 6 to one side. When the foot board is replaced, the arm 6 is swung back to the position shown, the foot board will be tightly held in position, and pressed tightly against bar 5, so as to positively exclude the dust and dirt from the piano.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invent-ion, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a removable foot board of a piano, of an arm pivotally connected to the under face of the piano key bottom, and a spring-pressed plunger supported on said arm and bearing against said foot board, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a removable foot board of a piano, and a bar inside the piano against which the upper end of said foot board is positioned, of an arm having an opening near one end, a screw projected through said opening and screwed into the piano key bottom and pivotally supporting said arm, said arm inclined away from the bottom face of the piano key bottom, and having an opening extending through its free end, a spring-pressed cushioned plunger in said opening bearing against said foot board, and a rod secured to said plunger and bent at an angle constituting a finger hold for the withdrawal of said plunger, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a removable foot board of a piano, and a piano key bottom, of an arm pivotally connected to the under face of the key bottom, a plunger on said name to this specification in the presence of arm having one end pro1ected beyond the two subscribing wltnesses.
