Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
Application filed January 5, 1916. Serial No. 70,348.
To all whom it may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, GUsTAv A. BEHR- MANN, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sash holder of novel construction, by means of which the upper sash may be locked in a closed or more or less open position. The holder may be readily manipulated, prevents rattling, sustains the sash even with torn cords, and is inaccessible to house-breakers.
1n the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a sash holder embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front view, and Fig. 3 a plan.
The device comprises essentially, a ianged base plate 1, adapted to be litted to the top rail 2 of the lower sash 3, to which it is attached by screws 4L. Plate 1, carries a tubular casing 5, from the top of which, eX- tend upwardly, a pair of rear lugs 6 constituting bearings. In these bearings is hung by a pivot 7, an arched arm 8 having a tail piece 9 that extends across the open rear end of casing 5. rlhis tail piece is engaged by one end of a coiled spring 10 which is housed within the casing 5, and is aiiixed at its other end to the front wall thereof. Arm 8 is furnished at its free end with a concave brake shoe 11 lined with acorrespondingly shaped pad or cushion 12. This cushion is adapted to frictionally engage the central bar 13 of the upper sash 14 against which it is rmly held by the spring 10. Owing to the action or' this spring, the upper sash will be sustained from the lower sash at any elevation to which it has been set.
Through bearings 6 extends a transverse aperture 15, adapted to become alined with an aperture 16, formed in a collar 17 of arm contact with the upper sash as indicatedby dotted lines in Fig. 1.
1 claim: A sash holder comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to the top rail of a lower sash, a casing Vmounted on the plate and having a rear opening, bearings extend-VV ing upwardly from the casing, an arched arm pivoted to the bearings and having a Vtail piece that extends kinto the casing through the opening thereof, a spring within the casing that engages said tail piece, a
concave brake shoe carried by the arm, and adapted Vto be projected into engagement with a bar on the upper sash, and means for maintaining. said shoe out of engagement with said bar. f c
