JACOB REES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO SAMUEL \VAGNER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED BLACKING-BOX HOLDER AND FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,100, dated January 31, 1 882. Application filed October 18, 1881. (Model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB REES, of Cleveland, in the countyot' Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Combined Blacking -Box Holder and Foot- Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and egract description.
This invention consists in hingiug the blacking-box holderunder the foot-rest, and in corn structing the foot-rest and cover of the boxholder, and combining the same in such manner thatthe cover will be automatically opened and closed upon the withdrawal of the boxholder from and returning it under the footrest.
The invention also consists in providing the device with a spring-catch for locking the boxholder in place under the foot-rest.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereol'; and Fig. 3 is a plan view'of the box-holder, removed, showing a modification.
A represents the foot-rest, which is of cast metal, and is adapted to be secured upon the board, brush-box, or other suitable and convenient support, F; and B represents the blacking-box holder, which is cast with the extension or arm a, by means of which the boxholder is pivoted by the screw e upon the board, brush-box, or other support, F, under the foot-rest, as shown.
Upon the blacking-box is pivoted at d the cover (3, which is provided at a point diametrically opposite the pivot (1 with the stud or pin j, which moves in the slot 9, made in the center bar, h, of the foot-rest.
Through the wall of the box-holder, at any convenient point, is placed the set-screw b, for securing the blacking-box in place in the boxholder.
In most instances the foot-rest will be cast with the forward extension and bracket E, for supporting the spring catch or stop F, the inner end of which passes through the forward vertical part of the foot-rest, and engages with a suitable notch in the box-holder for holding the box-holder in place under the foot-rest;
and ordinarily the finger-lugs i i will be cast upon the sides of the box-holder, as shown in Fig. 2, to serve as convenient means for withdrawing the box-holder from under the footrest in either direction. 4
In some instances the box-holder and rest will be put upon a board hinged to the wall or some convenient place, so that after use the whole, may be tipped up against the wall, out of the way. In such cases the spring-catch need not be used, and the box-holder need be provided only with the single finger-lug j, as shown in Fig. 3, as the box-holder can then swing only in one direction, and the whole will be stationary.
Thus constructed it will be perceived that upon swinging the box-holder from under the foot-rest to the position for use, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the cover will be automatically removed from the box-holder by means of the movement of the pin or stud f in the slot 9 of the foot-rest, and upon returnin g the box-holder to place underthe foot-rest the cover will have the reverse movement, thus automatically closing the box-holder.
In some instances the spring-catch F will be made so as to be operated by the pressure of the foot upon the foot-rest.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- 1. The foot-rest A, formed with the slot g, in combination with the swinging box-holder B, and thecover 0, provided with the pinf, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the foot-rest A, having slot g, the cover 0, pivoted to box at d and provided with the opposite studf, andthe,
JACOB REES.
Witnesses: I
JOHN P. B'ELZ, FRANK D. SMITH.
