GILBERT E. BOGART AND GEORGE L. BOGART, OF SOUTH NORVVALK, CON- NEOTIGUT.
BLACKlNG-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,831, dated November 4, 1890.
' Application filed May 26, 1890. Serial No. 353,117. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: catch 4, which may be a spring-bolt, hook, Be it known that we, GILBERT E. BOGART or latch of any sort, but is preferably selfand GEORGE L.BOGART, citizens of the United acting. Upon the outer face of the door is States, residing at South Norwalk, in the pivoted a swinging rest 5. The cross-piece 6 5 county of Fail-field and State of Connecticut, of the restis provided with trunnions 7, which have invented certain new and useful Imengage brackets 8, secured to the outer face provements in Blacking-Cabinets; and we do of the door, and the brackets are provided hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, with stop-plates 8, which are adapted to be and exact description of the invention, such engaged by lugs 9 on the cross-piece to stop 6o :0 as will enable others skilled in the art to the outward movement of the rest when the which it appertains to make and use the door is let down to the open position, as is same. clearlyshown in Fig. 6. The swinging rest Our invention has for its object to produce may of course be of any suitable ornamental a blacking-cabinet which shall be simple and construction, and is preferably provided at 15 inexpensive to manufacture, compact, adapt-- its lower ends with bearing-pieces 10, which ed to be rigidly fixed in position upon a wall, rest upon the floor when the cabinet is in the and which when closed shall. be entirely out open position. of the way. It will of course be unders ood that the With these ends in View we have devised cabinet should be placed just high enough 20 the novel wall-cabinet, of which the followupon the wall so that in the open position the ing description, in connection with the accombearing-pieces will rest upon the floor, leavpanying drawings, is aspecification, numbers ing the door in substantiallya horizontal pobeing used to denote the several parts. sition, as shown in Fig. 6. Upon the inner Figure 1 is a perspective of the cabinet side of the door, so as to be in convenient po- 25 in the open position; Fig. 2, a perspective sition for use when the door is in the open posishowing the cabinet in closed position; Fig. tion, we place a foot-rest 11, and within the 3, a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of cabinet near the bottom thereof we provide the swinging blacking-holder and the plate a hook 12, upon which to hangadauber, and to which it is pivoted, the parts being in the a suitable spring-catch 13, with which to hold 30 open position and the back of the cabinet the polishing-brush in place, as is clearly showing in section; Fig. 4, a similar view shown in Fig. 1. showing the parts in the closed position, both Upon the back of the cabinet we place a views illustrating the manner in which a box plate 14, having cars 14, to which are pivoted of blacking is held; Fig. 5, a plan View of the a swinging blacking-holder 1-5, the plate and 3 5 holder, the box of blacking being removed; holder being so located in the'cabinetthat the and Fig. 6 is a partial side elevation showing holder will fold up readilywithin it when the the door and swinging rest in the open posidoor is closed, as indicated in Fig. 4. This tion. holderconsists of asuitable plate, upon which 1 denotes the cabinet, which may be made the box of blacking rests, and which is pro- 40 of metal or wood, but is ordinarily made of vided at its edge in the usual manner with wood, and is adapted to be secured in place lugs 16, against which the box of blacking upon the wall by screws or bolts passing rests. In order that any of the various-sized through holes in cars 2 at the top and bottom. boxes of blacking may be grasped and held The outer face of the cabinet consists of a firmly by the holder, we provide a slide 17, 5 5 door 3,which is providedwithinternal hinges engaging ways 18, which is adapted to be at the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, the door moved up against the side of the box to clamp when closed preferably passing within the it firmly, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. sides, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, leaving The slide is provided with a slot 19, and asetthe outer surface of the door flush with the screw 20 passing through this slot engages the 50 side pieces of the cabinet. The door is fastholder itself and locks the slide firmly in poened in the closed position by any suitable sition after adjustment. This set-screw may 1 and 6.
be either a thumb-screw, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, or may be a slotted headed screw, as in Fig. 1. At the inner end of holder we provide a downwardly-extending projection 21, which in the open position is adapted to engage plate 14, (see Fig. 3,) and upon the plate itself we also preferably form a lug 22, which is engaged by the top of the holder itself when it reaches the horizontal position, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. We thus provide a double support and stop for the holder when in the open position,so that it will rest firmly in use and also avoid danger of breakage should it drop suddenly to the open position.
The operation is as follows: Supposing that it is desired to use the cabinet, the operator simply releases catch 4 and allows the door to drop down to the open position,as in Figs. This leaves the doorina horizontal position, so that the foot-rest is in convenient position for use. As the door is dropped down, the blacking-holder also drops by gravity from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Figsl and 3, so as to be in convenient position for use. As already stated, we provide a double stop for the holder, so that it rests firmly in the open position, at the same time avoiding all danger of breakage should the door be opened suddenly. The dauber and the polishiug brush are both held in the cabinet in convenient position for use. After using, the operator replaces the polish-- ing-brush and dauber and simply closes the door, the door itself acting to pick up the blacking-holder and carry that also to the closed position as in Fig. at. As soon as the door has reached the closed position, it is locked there by catch 4, which is preferably made self-acting.
The cabinet is made deep enough in practice to just receive the dauber, polishingbrush, foot-rest, and blacking-holder easily and without crowding. It will be observed that the space is ample, so that either thick or thin boxes of blacking may be used with equal convenience, and also that by means of the slide any ordinary-sized boxes may be grasped and held firmly upon the holder by the slide, this feature adding greatly to the convenience of the device in use.
Having thus described our invention, we claim A blacking-cabinet closed at the front by a door-hinge at the bottom and having on its inner side at the back a hinged blackingholder, which, when the door is closed, folds within the cabinet and when the door is opened drops to horizontal position and extends outside the cabinet and below the blacking-holder, a hook to hold a dauber, and a spring-catch to hold a polishing-brush, the door having upon its inner side a foot-rest and upon its outer side a swinging rest, which sup ports the door and the foot-rest in the open position.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
