Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. BLISS, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CABINETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,681, dated September 5,1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BLISS, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Bhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Earth-Cabinet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a detail vertical section of my improved cabinet taken through the line a: a' x, Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line z e, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top View of the plate upon which the earth-reservoir rests. Fig. 5 is a bottom view ofthe sliding plate and hinged receiver.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts.
My invention has yfor its object to furnish an improved earth-cabinet or closet, simple and compact in construction and convenient in use; and it consists in the con struction and combination of the various parts of the cabinet, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the case of the cabinet or closet, which is provided with a door, c1,in the iront of its upper part. The front side of the lower part ofthe case A is made open to receive the seat-box B,which is made with a door in its forward side for convenience in putting in and taking out the receptaole or bucket C. The seat-box B is mounted upon small wheels or iction-rollers b1, for convenience in drawing it out and pushing it in, which wheels or rollers should be faced with rubber to prevent noise as the box is moved in and out. Upon the upper side of the bottom of the seatbox B is a guide-flange, b2, to bring the bucket or receptacle C into proper position when inserted. I) is a stationary dust-plate, the rear edge of which is attached to the rear side of the case A, and the side edges of which rest upon flan ges b3 upon the inner surface ofthe sides of the upper part of the seat-box B. In the rear part ofthe plate D is formed an opening to receive the lower end of the inclined spout E that conducts the earth from the receiver to the bucket or receptacle C, and the upper end of which is connected with an opening in the rear part of the partition a2 that separates the upper and lower parts of the case A. Upon the upper side of the partition a2 are formed, or to it are attached, two flanges, c3, which serve as supports for the slid ing plate F, and as ways for said plate to slide upon. To the rear parts of the top of the seatbox B are attached two upwardly-projecting pins, b4, which pass up through slots in the partition a2, into such a position that their upper ends may strike aga-inst stops f', attached to the under side of the sliding plate F to move the said plate back aud forth as the seat-box B is moved in and out. In the rear part of the sliding plate F is hinged a semi-cylindrical receiver, G, to receive the earth from the reservoir and conduct itto and discharge it into the conductor-spout E, through which it passes to the receptacle or bucket G. The receiver G is hinged at its forward edge, and is closed by the partition a2 as the sliding plate F is drawn forward, the bottom of said receiver resting upon the said partition. As the sliding plate F is drawn forward the receiver G is broughtbeneath an opening in the plate H, through which it receives the earth from the reservoir I. The ends of the plate H rest upon cleats or dan ges attached to the sides of the case A, and has iianges hl attached to its lower side, which rest against flanges f2, attached to the upper side of the sliding plate F, to serve as guides to said plate F in its movements. The reservoir I is made hopper-shaped or tapering, to cause the earth to descend in it freely, and has a iiange, i1, attached to its lower part to serve as a foot to said reservoir and to give it a broader base. To the upper side of the plate H are attached flanges h2, to serve as guides to the reservoir in putting it in and taking it out, and to bring the lower open end of the said reservoir directly over the opening in the plate H, so that the earth may pass freely from the reservoir I to the receiver G. J is a slide to close the lower end of the reservoir I and prevent the escape of the earth while the said reservoir is being carried. The forward end ofthe slide J is turned down or has an arm, j', formed upon or attached to it, which passes down through a slotin the forward part of the plate H, so that its lower end may be struck by the edge of the plate F as it is drawn outward in drawing out the seat-box B to open the reservoir and allow the earth to dow down to enter the receiver G. K is a partition placed across the upper part of the case A, to form a compartmentto receive Waste paper, Sac., to which compartment access may be had through ay door, 61,4, in the top of the case A, as shown in Fig. l. The reservoir I is provided with a bail, i2, and handle f1,for convenience in carrying and handling it. Instead of sliding` out and inin :t straight line, the seat-box B may be pivoted so as t0 be swung out and in upon said pivots if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the case A, seat-box B, receptecle C, dust-plate D, conductor-spout E, partition a?, sliding plate F, pins 114, hinged receiver G, plate H, earth-reservoir I, a-nd slide J with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. BLISS.
