IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DESK AND CHEST OF DRAWERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,429., dated February 13, 1877 application filed November 21, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. Snare, of Manahawkimin the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Combined Desk and Chest of Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the chest. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the chair-seat. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of the chest and supplementary bottom.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a desk having a base-board, a, sides a a, and body M, the latter having a hinged lid, a Bis a chest, provided with drawers 1) b, which slide in and out, in the usual manner. Said chest is provided with a supple- ,niental bottom, 0, to which it is pivotally secured by a wood'screw, c. 0 represents a segmental countersunk slot in the bottom G, in which a screw, 0, entering the bottom of the chest B plays when said chest is swung around on its pivot, c. G C represent parallel slots in the bottom 0, through which pass screws (1 d into the base-board a. E shows a chair-seat, formed with a countersunk slot, 6, terminating in a circular opening, 6. A woodscrew, f, inserted in the top of the chest B, enters this slot, being introduced by way of the opening 0 permitting said seat to be slid-along the top of the chest, which forms its base, and also to swivel or rotate on said base.

The method of operation is obvious. When the article is in use the chest will be drawn out, as in Fig. 1, so that the desk may be conveniently used by one in a sitting posture,

the chair-seat occupying the position shown,

it is desirable to have it occupy as little space as possible, the chest, with its supplemental bottom, is slid in beneath the body of the desk, the chair-seat moving back upon said chest until the screw f meets the forward extremity e of the slot 0.

To facilitate the movement in and out of the chest, as also to give it a level bearing, it is supported at its rear end by rollers gg, having bearings in boxes g g, said boxes forming stops, which limit the inward sliding of the supplemental bottom 0 by impingingagainst the edge of the base-board a.

What I claim as my invention isi l. A combined desk and'chest, the latter being arranged to serve as a seat for the former, and to slide into or beneath the desk when not in use, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the desk A and chest B, the supplementary sliding bottom 0, substantially as shown and described.

3. In combination with the sliding bottom O, the chest 13 pivoted thereto, substantially as shown and set forth.

4. The combination of the pivoted chest B, having screw 0 with the slidingbottom 0, having segmental slot 0 5. In combination with the chest B, having screwf, the chair-seat E, having slot 0, substantially as shown and described.
