COMBINATION CABINET, DESK, AND PHYSICIANS OPERATING-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,098, dated February 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK LE ROY TETA- MORE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Cabinet, Desk, and Physicians Operating-Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved article of furniture for a physicians or surgeons office. Its object is to combine in the one piece of furniture the conveniences of an office-desk, a cabinet of drawers for instruments, and an operating table, presenting, when in ordinary use, the appearance of a neat cabinet and desk, and which, when opened out, shall constitute a convenient adjustable operating-table, with the drawers in position for ready access.

It consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several portions of the device, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device when normally in use as a writing-desk, with the cover partly closed; Fig. 2, a similar View thereof when converted into an operating-table; and Fig. 3, a central vertical section of the device when closed in its upright form as a desk and cabinet, with the position of its parts when in use as an operating-table indicated by dotted lines, detail of the top of the desk, similar to Fig. 3, but showing the cylinder-front thrown open.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a desk having a sliding top leaf A, made to draw out at the front to serve as a writing-table. It is preferably fitted with a single upper drawer A extending its entire width, and with three drawers A. A of half the width, placed beneath it to occupy one side of the lower portion thereof, the space in the remaining half being occupied by two lateral drawers A A The lower lateral drawer A is preferably fitted with a lid a, hinged thereto, so that when the drawer is Fig. 4 is a sectional pulled out its lid may serve as a convenient stand or step. These subdivisions of the desk may be varied without departing from my invention, although I have found those above described tobe in practice the most convenient. p

The two ends or sides of the desk are ex tended rearwardly, as at B B, beyond the space occupied by the drawers, and also upwardly above the top thereof, as at B B. Within the space inclosed by this rearward extension B B of the ends of the desk is fitted a frame or case 0 of a length adequate for the purposes of an operating-table, so that it will extend upward from the bottom of the desk to double the height of the desk. This frame is pivoted at WV, Fig. 3, midway of its length, to the two top extensions B B of the sides of the desk, at such a height above the top of the desk, with reference to the depth of the side pieces of the frame, as will permit its upper end to swing forward into a horizontal position and its side pieces to find a bearing and support upon the top of the desk, as shown at O in Fig. 2. So much of the front portion of this swinging frame as appears above the top side pieces B of the desk when the frame is in its vertical position is closed, preferably with doors O 0 so that it shall present the appearance of a cabinet, as shown in Fig. 1.

To obtain a more perfect finish for the desk and cabinet, and to utilize the space above the top of the desk and beneath the doors G offsets C are formed upon the side pieces G of the frame 0, to extend to the front above the top of the desk when the frame is in its upright position, and are made to correspond with the top side pieces B B of the desk, and a frame, consisting of quadrantal end pieces E E, connected bya curved front piece F, forming a section of a cylinder, (see Figs. 1, 3, and 4,) is pivoted, as at 19, between said offsets, to serve as a swinging cover for the space above the desk and present the same appearance as the curved movable front piece or cover of a cylinder desk, The space under this swinging front piece or cylindrical cover F is occupied by a set of shelves or of drawers D, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) which are fitted in a frame I), pivoted, as at 6, between the end pieces E E of the front piece, so as to swing freely therein, and thereby permit the shelves or drawers to maintain constantly a horizontal position irrespective of the position either of the table-frame O or of the front cover F.

By swinging open the cover F the shelves or drawers D attached thereto, as described,

are carried back into the open portion of the frame, so as to leave the space upon the top of the desk clear for use in writing, 850., as shown in the detailed Fig. 4:.

The frame 0 is covered upon its outer face by two leaves G G, hinged thereto in the middle, as shown in Fig. 2, to serve as the top of an operating-table. When the frame is in its vertical position, these leaves form the back of the case, (see Fig. 3,) and when it is swung into its horizontal position they constitute the top of the table. (See Fig. 2.) The rear leaf G admits of being adjusted to any desired point of inclination and supported at such angle by means of bars H H, hinged to its inner side, and whose free ends are adapted to engage racks K on the inner face of the side pieces 0 (J of the frame, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 8.

The outer end of the table-frame G is supported when it is swung into its horizontal position by means of joint-ed legs J J, adapted to fold inside of the frame, and one form thereof is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

In the inner or upper end of the table=frame O a frame M is fitted, preferably to slide in and out between suitable cleats M and crossbars M and a series of trays L L L are pivoted to swing freely between the side bars of this frame, so that they will automatically maintain their normal position, whether the table be in its open horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, or in the closed vertical position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A sliding leaf Q, having stirrup openings R R therein to receive the attachments required for securing the feet of a patient, is also fitted in this end of the frame 0 to serve as an extension-piece for the table and a support for the feet in certain operations when the knees are flexed.

The pivoted front piece F and the shelves or drawers D carried therewith are prevented from dropping below the level of the desktop when the table is swung into its horizontal position by means of an arm N projecting centrally from the rear of the upper part of the desk-frame, as shown in Fig. 3, in which the position of the front piece when supported by said arm is illustrated in dotted lines.

In the use of my invention when the operating-table is not needed it is swung into its upright position at the rear of the desk, its front end appearing above the desk at the top of a cabinet closed by the doors 0 C as shown in Fig. 1, the curved front piece F being brought thereby into position to close immediately upon the top of the desk. In this arrangement of its parts the device is serviceable as a writing-desk and cabinet for instruments. By drawing out-the sliding top piece the desk is enlarged for writing. By 1ifting the cylindrical front piece F the shelves or drawers D are reached, said shelves or drawers being automatically maintained in a I horizontal position by reason of their pivotal support. By opening the doors 0 access is had to the series of pivoted trays L L L, which automatically assume a horizontal position.

When the operating-table is needed, the top of the cabinet is swung forward so as to bring the back thereof and the leaves G G of the table to a horizontal position, in which it is secured and supported by dropping the j ointed legs J J to their vertical position, all as shown in Fig. 2, and dotted lines, Fig. 3.

The trays L L and drawers D carried with the frame of the table will automatically swing into a horizontal position as the table is brought into place, so that their contents will not be disturbed. The rear leaf G of the table may now be adjusted and propped up by means of the bar H to any desired angle, and the table extended, if required, by drawing out the sliding leaf Q at the front end. The frame M, containing the trays L L, may also be drawn out at the front end of the table to obtain access to the trays, and the lateral drawer A having a lid (1, be drawn out to serve as a step to facilitate reaching the top of the table.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a combined cabinet, writing-desk, and physicians operating-table, of a desk, a table pivoted thereto to swing from an upright position at the back to a horizontal position upon the top thereof, and a series of trays pivoted inside the frame of the table to assume and maintain automatically a horizontal position independently of the position of the table, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The combination of a desk, a table pivoted thereto to swing from an upright position at the back to ahorizontal position upon the top thereof,a sliding frame fitted to move in and out-at the front end of the table, and a series of trays pivoted within said sliding frame to assume and maintain automatically a horizontal position independently of the position of the table, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

3. The combination, with a desk and a table pivoted to its rear portion to swing from an upright position at the back to a horizontal position upon the top thereof, and with a curved front piece secured to end pieces pivoted to the inner sides of the frame of the table at the level of the top of the desk, of a set of drawers or shelves fitted in a frame pivoted between said end pieces to maintain automatically a horizontal position, substan tially in. the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
