UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY OLOSTERMAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEM ENT IN Ll BRARY-TABLES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,173, dated February 12, 1878 application filed March 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GLosTERMAN, of Gincinnati,Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Library- Tables, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of library-tables; and consists in a certain combination of the lifting table-top with the sliding drawer, by which, when the drawer is closed, the top of the table will be securely retained in the closed position.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved table when the cover or top is partly elevated, the inkstand swung out for use, and the drawer partly open. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the table when the top is down.
A is the frame of the table, B the adjustable top, and G the drawer. The frame is provided with one. or two rows of ratchet-teeth, D, and has hinges a attached to its front edge, to which the top B is secured, so that it may swing on said hinges for the purpose of adjustability to different angles, to suit the user in writing or reading.
To the top B a frame, E, is suspended by hinges e, the pendent arms 6 of this frame being beveled at the lower ends, as shown, to fit the ratchet-teeth D. This frame E has a projecting handle or handles, 6, which, when the top of the table is down, are accommodated byn'otches or recesses e in the frame A. Notches I) accommodate the cross-bar of the frame E. The handles 0 project through the frame, so that they can be manipulated when the top is down, and be the means by which the frame E is set to the required point in the row of ratchet-teeth D; and this frame and ratchet-teeth are the means by which the top B is set to different angles of inclination.
F is a blook, hinged at one corner, as shown, to the frame A, and having a cavity for the reception of an inkstand, G. When this block is swung inward, its exterior surface corresponds with the exterior outline of the table, so that its presence is entirely concealed, and when it is swung outward it exposes the ink- 7 stand to the convenient use of the person sitting at the table.
The drawer O is provided with a latch or lock, 0, at the front edge and a projecting pin, 0, at the rear edge, which pin, when the top is down, fits into a perforated lug, H, secured to the bottom of the cover B, and serves to prevent the raising of the cover when the drawer is closed. The table can then be lifted and moved about without any swinging movement of the cover or table-top.
I claim- In combination with the table A, having hinged top B and drawer G, the pin-a'nd-eye locking device 0 H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
HENRY OLOSTERMAN.
