lUNrrn TATES' MEL-VIN BANOROFT, OF IVHITESBOROUGI-I, NElV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE QUIGLEY FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,912, dated December 29, 1891.
Application iled May 23, 1891. vSerial No. 393,822. (No model.)
To all .whom it may conccrnl:
Be it known that I, MELvIN BANCROFT, of Whitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented. certaiirnew and useful Improvements in Type -Writer Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following isv a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. l
My invention relates to an improvementin type-Writer cabinets.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows a frontl elevation of my cabinet in closed position. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the same, taken on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the same parts shown in Fig. 2 in the position immediately after opening. Fig. 4 show the same parts in complete open position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the cover.
Referring more specifically to thereferencenumerals marked on the drawings in a more particular description of the construction, 1 indicates the type-writer case, which is preferably provided with a vertical row of drawers 2 2 at each end of the case anda well 3 in the middle portion thereof, having walls 4 and 5, forming the sides of the well. Fixed on the walls 4 and 5 are vinclined tracks or ways 6 extending from the rear wall of the case about two-thirds the width of the case. From the front end of the inclined tracks or ways 6, at a steeper angle or grade, extends a shelf-support 7, which terminates at the front edge of the case. Within the Well 3 is mounted a platform 8, supported at its rear end by supporting-brackets 9, one of which is adapted to run on each of the ways 6. On the platform 8 may be mounted the type-writer 10. The frontend of the platform is supported -on shelf-support 7 by the outer end of the platform engaging the shelf-support 7 when in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, or the sition.
vcentral bottoni portion engaging the edge or the front edge or corner of the piece 7 and secure the type-writer platform in open po- On the walls 4 and 5, at either side, is provided a stop 13, adapted to engage the upper surface of the platform and prevent the same from being withdrawnor tilted over its support in the open position. The cover of the well is formed in two sections 14 and 15, hinged together at l16 and to the case at 17. The section 14 is provided with a right-angular extension 18, adapted to close the front of the type-writer .well from the cover down to the edge of shelf-support 7. The sections of the cover are supported in closed position by a projecting cleat 19 along each side of the well from front to rear on each 0f the walls 4 and 5. To the sections 15 of the cover is hinged at 2O aprop 21, which prop is adapted to engage a shouldered notch 22 in piece 19 when in use, and when out of use is contained within recess 23 in the piece 19. Secured to the rear end of the platform and projecting at right angles thereto is a rim or wall 24, which is of the same length as the width of the platform. The Width of the platform is the same as the width of the well and the length of the type-Writer platform is a trifle more than the distance from the inner edge of shelf-support 7 to the rear Wall of the case.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows: Vhen it is desired to bring the type-writer machine into operation from the closed position of the case, (shown in Figs. 1
`and 2,) the front section 14 of the well-cover is turned back onto the top of section 15, and the section 15 is raised at the front end'so that prop 21 will swing out at its lower end, so that it Will engage shoulder 22 and support the cover in the inclined position shown in Figs. 3 and 5'. The type-writer platform is then drawn forward by means of suitable handles on the platform or otherwise, the front end of the platform sliding up the inclined shelf-support 7 and the brackets 9, sup- IOO porting the rear end of the platform, moving y along the ways or tracks G. As the platform nearly completes its movement toward the open position the front end is carried by pieces 11, sliding over the upper edge of the piece 7, until the platform drops into position so that shoulder 12 engages the npper front edge of the piece 7, securing the platform in open position. The forward movement of the platform is limited by the rear end engaging the stop 13 and the platform and brackets becoming wedged between the stop and the ways or tracks (5.' After the platform is drawn into its forward position the prop of the cover may be removed, allowing the cover to swing to its propel' position, as shown in Fig. l, in which the swinging end of the section 15 comes in contact with the ledge or wall 2l on the rear of the platform, thus completely closing the well from the n pper side when the platform is in open position. lt willbe observed, also, that the well is completely closed by the platform and the inclined shelfsupport 7 when the case is in closed position. It will also be observed that the platform in both its open and closed positions is in horizontal position; but between these two positions the front end is higher than the rear end, and that the front end of the platform, being allowed to project over the front edge of the shelf-support 7, allows the platform to assume its horizontal position when in open position.
.Vhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a typewriter cabinet having a well, of inclined ways 6, extending from the rear of the well toward the front, an inclined shelfway and supports 7, extending from the front end of the inclined ways to the front edge of the case at a steeper angle than the ways and spanning the well from wall to wall, a movable type-writer platform S, spanning the well from wall to wall and resting at its front end on the shelfesnpport 7 and supported at its rear end by brackets :running on the ways, a projecting piece providing a shoulder 12 under the middle under side of the platform, adapted to engage the front edge of the inclined shelf and secure the platform in open position, and a stop 13 on the wall of the well back of the front edge of the shelf, adapted to be engaged by the rear end of the platform to prevent its withdrawal from the case or tilting over the edge of the shelf, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
