To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. Book, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kalispell, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cabinets for blanks, and more especially to that class employin adjustable shelves.

The cabinet is designed for use in the storing or keeping of blanks of various forms, and to keep the same suitably assorted or divided requires a very fine adjustment of the separating-shelves, as it is the object of the invention that the blanks be so placed within the cabinet as to have the appearance of a single pile.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character that is easy to adjust and that is securely held in its various adjustments.

Another object is to provide a device of this character that is simple in construction, efli cient in practice, and economical in manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists'in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention, the shelves being shown at various adjustments. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 isa perspective view of one of the shelves, showing the guides therefor; and Fig. 7 is a perspective in detail, showing the connection between a rack and the moving platform.

In the drawings, 1 denotes a casing having its front portion open. Near-the top of the casing is rigidly secured a partition 3, while near the bottom is another partition 2, forming with the casing the compartments 4 and 4E.

Within the compartment 4 is located a movable platform 5, on the under surface of which is secured a rib or strip 6. Also attached to the under surface of said platform is a bracket 31. Mounted in the casing is an eccentric roller 7, said roller being within the compartment 4 and adapted to bear against the rib 6, and thereby elevate the platform. The roller also passes through the bracket 31 and is adapted to bear thereagainst by a continuation of its movement, and thereby lower the platform. The roller is provided with a cutaway portion 8 in order that the roller may pass freely by the rib 6 when an eccentric action is being exerted on the bracket.

Near each corner of the platform is a slot 9, through which depends an end of a rack 10, said end being pivotally held by a pin 11, secured to the under surface of the platform. The ends of the racks are provided with slots 12, which engage the pins, whereby the said racks may be easily assembled or removed. The racks extend up through slots 13 in the partition 2 and slots 13 in the partition 3 and are adapted to bear against guides 14, secured to the sides of the casing. 'The racks are held against said guides by means of springs 15, secured centrally to the casing, the free ends ofsaid springs bearing against the racks.

The rear of the compartmentf is provided with a recess 16, in which moves a projection or shoulder 17 on the platform 5. Secured to the upper surface of this projection is an upright 18, which passes through an aperture 19 in the partition 2. This upright bears against the rear wall of the casing and acts as a guide for the movement of the platform. To prevent sidewise movement of the upright and to limit its vertical play, a slot 20 is provided in the rear wall of the casing, through which passes a stud 21, attached to the said upright. Said stud is provided with a head 22, which also prevents any inward movement of the upright.

The sides of the casing are provided with ways formed by the plates 24,"se'cured to the sides of the vertical recesses 25, formed in the sides of the casing, and the shelves 26 have guide-wires adapted to ride in said ways.

Each of the guide-wires comprises a strip bent upon itself to form a loop 27, the saidloop being bent at its top at an angle to ride in the groove. The ends of the wire are caused to diverge, then offset to form a shoulder 28, and finally the ends are bent to rest in a groove 29 in the sides of the shelves.

The shelves have corner-slots 30, which fit over the racks. The front corners of each shelf are cut away, as at 23, to embrace strips 32, located at the front edge of the sides of the casing. These strips limit the outward movement of the shelves and also act as guides in their vertical movement. Centrally of the rear edges of the shelves project pins 33, adapted to bear against a wear-plate 34, attached centrally to the upright 18 to permit free movement of the said shelves.

The shelves each have a slot 38 in their rear edge, in which is centrally pivoted by a pin 37 a cross-lever 36. Within the side slots 29 are links 35, pivotally secured at one end to the cross-lever 36. The links are provided at each end with latches 40, adapted to engage the teeth of the racks. On alternate sides of the shelves one of the links has a handle 41. This is to prevent the movement of one handle from interfering in any way with the movement of another.

A crank-handle 42 is employed for imparting motion to the eccentric roller 7.

The action of the eccentric upon the platform is apt to cause a lateral movement thereof.- To prevent this, springs 43 are secured at one end to the walls of the compartment 4, near the top thereof, and so depend as to bear against the sides of the said platform.

In operation blanks of different forms are separated one from the other by the shelves; but with an article of this kind the adjustment may be so fine that the blanks of one form would terminate between certain ratchets or teethon the racks, and thereby prevent the locking of the separating-shelf. To permit that shelf to be locked, it is only necessary to turn the eccentric roller to either raise or lower the platform, as the case may be, sufficient distance as to allow the lock to engage the teeth.

Although the invention has been mentioned as used for cabinets for blanks, it is to be understood that the invention may be used in any place where adjustable shelves are desirable.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is

1. In a device of the character described, a casing, a movable platform therein, racks pivoted atone end to the platform, guides for the racks, and shelves supported by the racks.

2. In a device of the character described, a casing, a movable platform therein, racks secured to the platform, guides for the racks, springs for holding the racks in engagement with the guides, and shelves supported by the racks.

3. In a device of the character described, a casing, a platform within the casing, a guide for the platform, means for limiting the movement of the guide, shelf-supporting means carried by the platform, and means for imparting movement to the platform.

4:. In a device of the character described, a casing, an eccentric mounted within the casing, a platform within the casing adapted to be engaged and moved by the eccentric, and shelfsupporting means carried by the platform.

5. In a device of the character described, a casing, an eccentric within the casing, a platform, a rib on the platform adapted to contact with the eccentric, and shelf-supporting means carried by the platform.

6. In a device of the character described, a casing, an eccentric-roller within the casing, a platform, a rib on the platform adapted to be engaged by the roller, a bracket on the platform also adapted to be engaged by the roller, and shelf-supporting means carried by the platform.

7 In a device of the character described, a casing, an eccentric within the casing, a movable platform, a rib on the platform, and a bracket secured to the platform, said rib and bracket being adapted to be engaged by the eccentric, said eccentric being provided with a groove whereby it is free to pass over the rib throughout a portion of its movement.

8. In a device of the character described, a casing, a movable platform within the casing, racks secured to the platform, shelves supported by the racks, and guiding means for the shelves.

9. In a device of the character described, a casing having ways, adjustable shelves within the casing and guides for said shelves, each guide comprising a piece of wire bent upon itself to form a loop, said loop being bent at one end at an angle to ride in the Ways of the casing, the opposite end of the loop being bent so as to be secured to the shelf.

10. In a device of the character described, a casing, adjustable shelves having grooves in their sides within the casing and locking means carried by the shelves, said locking means comprising a cross-lever in the rear groove of each shelf, links in the side grooves pivlpted thereto and latches carried by'the in s.

In a device of the character described, a casing, adjustable shelves having grooves in their sides within the casing and means carried by the shelves for locking the shelves in theiradjusted position, said means comprising a cross-lever centrally pivoted in a rear groove of each shelf, links in the side grooves pivoted to the cross-lever, latches carried by the links, and means for operating the latches".
