This invention relates to new and useful improvements in desks, and it has for its object to provide the combination of a desk and typewriter, whereby the latter may be brought out of sight by being retracted within said desk; the said typewriter may automatically be brought back and replaced on top of said desk, or upon a slidable member forming part of the latter.

Provision is made in the construction of this invention to the effect that said typewriter may be operated in different positions relative to the desk.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,

hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:

showing but an ordinary or conventional front of a desk.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 2.2 in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary transverse view of my combined desk and typewriter invention, as illustrated in Figure 2, but with the typewriter in operable position, and shown partly in elevation and partly in section; while Figure 4 is a bottom view in part of Figure 3.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral I0 indicates a desk of the general appearance. Said desk is upon one side thereof formed with a drawer II, operated by a knob I1, and adapted to accommodate a typewriter I2 mounted upon a support or track I3. Said support is turnably secured to a base plate M, which in turn is hinged to a skeleton frame I5. This arrangement is effected by having an end of the base plate [4 bent upon itself to form a hinge joint, as shown at 30 in Figure 4, and at the same time having two projections 3| on the skeleton frame I5 bent to form corresponding hinge joints, as also shown in Figure 4, whereupon a pin I6, inserted through said hinge joints, hingedly connects the base plate M to the skeleton frame I5.

A transversely arranged tension spring I8, underneath the base plate I 4, has its ends 32, which are bent at right angles to the main portion, secured upon each side of the pin I6. Said spring serves to support the base plate l4, and to minimize the force of gravity in letting down the base plate I4 with the typewriter thereon, when said typewriter is not in use, to the lower inside of the drawer I I.

Rods I9 are arranged, one upon each side of and within the drawer II which slides on guides 50, said rods have their ends fixedly secured to the drawer as at 2| and 2| and serve as a further support of the base plate I4, when the typewriter is in operative position, as a substantial part of the base plate I 4 may then rest upon the horizontal portions 34 of the rods I9, I9, according to how far the skeleton frame is pulled out.

The said base plate I4 on which the typewriter is positioned, slides on said rods I9, I 9 by means of roller bearings 20 on the base plate M, when it is desired to collapse the typewriten-which will then be entirely hidden within the drawer I l.

The typewriter is solidly attached to the support I 3, while said support is turnable in different directions and capable of being moved forward and backward by means of the arrangement of ,a bolt 22 secured to the base plate I4 and inserted through an opening 23 in said support carrying the, typewriter; it being understood that said opening 23 is of a size and shape to permit the movement of said bolt 22 therein.

The skeleton frame I5 is formed with flanges 35 depending upon each side of the drawer II and adapted to slide upon the edges 5| on the sides of the latter.

Said skeleton frame I5 is also formed with a bridge 36 at such a distance from the outer end 31 thereof, that an opening 38 is provided between said outer end and the bridge large enough to accommodate the base plate I 4, when the typewriter is brought into operable position.

A depressible stud 39 is adapted to engage a recess 40 underneath the surface of the desk above the drawer, so as to close the latter; while another stud 4| normally prevents the drawer from being pulled out too far.

In operation, the drawer II with the skeleton frame I5 is pulled out.

Next the drawer is pushed in, while the skeleton frame I5 remains out, as the stud 39 upon the bridge 36 of said skeleton frame strikes against the outer edge of the desk I0. At the same time, by pushing the drawer in, the typewriter will ride upward on the rods I9, I9 inside said drawer until it gets into a horizontal position, ready for operation, as in this instance the base plate I 4 extends a short distance underneath the bridge 36, whereby the rods I9, I9 still are in position to support the inner end of said base plate in horizontal position, and through the latter the said typewriter.

The said typewriter will thus be brought into operation with the easy movements of pulling out, and next pushing in the said drawer.

By subsequently pulling out the drawer, and pressing down the stud 39, and then pushing in the drawer, the typewriter l2 will be retracted through the opening 38, and the drawer may be closed.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described herein. I p v What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: I

1. In combination, a typewriter mounted on a support, a base plate, said support being turnably secured to the latter, a skeleton frame having the base plate hingedly secured thereto, said skeleton frame being formed with an opening, a drawer adapted to accommodat said base plate in an up and downward movement of the latter within said drawer, guide rods having one front attached to the end of said drawer and the other end to the bottom thereof and slanting toward said bottom, whereby to support the base plate in its up and downward movement in said drawer, the skeleton frame being formed with a bridge, the base plate extending underneath th latter and resting upon said guide rods, when said base plate, with the typewriter, is in a horizontal position.

2. In a device, as claimed in claim 1, and wherein a spring is arranged underneath the base plate and pivotally secured to the latter, whereby to give resistive tension to the base plate.

3. In the combination of a desk and retractable typewriter, a drawer, a skeleton frame slidably mounted upon the latter, said skeleton frame being formed with a substantially centrally ar- 40 ranged bridge, the skeleton frame having an 4 opening between the outer end thereof and said bridge, said skeleton frame being formed with hinge joints, a base plate having corresponding hinge joints, and a pin connecting the hinge joints of said frame and plate, a typewriter, a support for the latter, said support being turnably mounted on said base plate, guide rods slanting downwardly towardthe center of the drawer, the base plate, with the typewriter, being adapted to ride on said guide rods in a downward direction through said opening by pulling said drawer outwardly.

4. In th combination of a desk and retractable typewriter, a drawer, a skeleton frame slidably mounted upon the latter, said skeleton frame having an opening therein adapted to permit the passing of a typewriter through the latter, a base plate hinged to said skeleton frame, a support for a typewriter mounted upon said base plate, said support being formed with a hole therein, and a bolt on said base plat adapted to engage said hole, whereby to permit the turning of the support, guide rods mounted upon each side within the drawer, said rods slanting downwardly toward the center of the drawer, the base plate with the typewriter, being adapted to ride on said guide rods in an upward direction, when the drawer is moved inwardly, putting said base and typewriter in a horizontal position.
