UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
WVILLARD A. STODDARD, OF HERK-IMER, NEYV YORK.
TYPE-WRITER CABIN ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 38,291, dated April 30,1895. hppl n deptember 4, 1894- SerialNa622 0O5. (No nodel.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLARD A. STODDARD, of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Cabinets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in type-writer cabinets.
My object is to provide an improved mechanism for supporting the table and for opening and closing the cabinet and in which the opening or closing of the cover either swings the table forward and upward or backward and downward, thus either bringing the machine into operative position or inclosing it within the case under the cover, as desired.
My further object is also to provide a cabinet or type-Writing desk in which the machine supporting shelf or table may be raised and lowered and held in a horizontal position by a simple and effective mechanism, without the use of weights or other counterbalancing devices, and be cheap and durable in its construction and of great utility; and to that end,
my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combination of parts hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed, It is constructed as follows, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross section, showing the operating parts as they appear when the cabinet is closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view,
showing the parts as they appear when open. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged details showing how the movable table is mounted upon its front edge, showing the table in its closed and opened position, respectively. Fig. 5 is an edge'view of the bracketto which the upper cover is secured.
-A- is a type-writer cabinet of any form or construction desired and provided with a lifting cover -a having a downwardly extending strip -a'--- upon its front edge for the purpose of olosin g the opening in the front The rear edge of the cover a is secured to a bracket b", and B is a curved track or guide secured to each inner side of the cabinet and provided with a groove c in which the lug c' upon the bracket b is adapted to travel.
- d is a movable table upon which the type-writer is adapted to rest,'preferably having its inner edge turned upas shown at d-, so as to allow it, when closed, and occupying an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, to
7 rest upon the stationary shelf -e.
fis a lever pivoted substantially'centrally as shown at g, having one end hinged to the side of the movable table and the opposite end to the bracket -b.
h are anti-friction rollers mounted upon the inside of the cabinet and the lateral edges of the movable table mounted thereon.
Assuming that the cabinet is closed, as shown in Fig. 2 it will be observed that by raising the cover -athe lug -c'- will travel downwardly in the semi-circular groove c until it reaches the bottom. At the same time the lever fhaving one end secured to said bracket and the other end to themovable table will force the movable table up to a horizontal position and outward, so that the machine will be in a position ready for use.
In Figs. 3 and at I have dispensed with the anti-friction rollers h and provided the movable table with a slide '"3 having a groove therein, in which a. ing upon the bracket 4: is adapted to travel.
It will be seen that the lever f and bracket --b aided by the track B constitute the sole support of the cover as well as guiding it in its shifts from one position to another, and thatthe guide is concentric with the pivot of the lever, so that said pivot is the sole and only center of oscillation of the cover; and that by reason of this guiding of its movements, said cover always moves steady, without the lateral vibration or rattling, but swings freely upon the pivot of the lever, and the lower end of said guide groove is a position stop to hold the cover in avertical position and the weight of the cover counterbalances that part of the weight of the machine which is carried by the rearward portion of the table, and also that the upper end of said groove operates as a positive stop to the closing movement of the'cover.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cabinet for typewriting machines, comprisinga movable cover, a movable supportin g shelf or table, curved grooved cover-guides secured to the sides of the cabinet, brackets secured to the movable cover each having a lug adapted to travel in one of said guides and a lever pivoted centrally, and connecting the cover and table whereby the same are operated simultaneously, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. A cabinet for typewriting machines, comprising a movable cover, a movable supportin g shelf or table, curved grooved cover guides secured to the sides of the cabinet, brackets secured to the movable cover each having a lug adapted to travel in one of said guides and a lever pivoted centrally connecting the cover and table whereby the same are operated simultaneously, anti-frictional rollers mounted upon the inner sides of the cabinet, upon which the movable table is adapted to travel, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 28th day of August, 1894.
