MELVIN BANCROFT, OF W'HITESBOROUGH, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO THE QUIGLEY FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-WRITER CABIN ET.v
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettershPatent No. 505,586, dated September 26, 1893. l
Application filed May 19, 1893. Serial No. 474,739. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MELvIN BANCROFT, of Whitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Vriter Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an improvement in typewriterv cabinets.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification and in which similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a front view of the cabinet in closed position. Fig. 2 shows a section through the well with the cabinetin closed position. Fig. 3 shows the same section with the cabinet in partially open position. Fig. 4 shows it in the open position. Fig. 5 shows details relating to the cover.
Referring more particularly to the reference numerals marked on the drawings in a more specific description of the device, 1 and 2 indicate the side walls of the well 3, and the cabinet may be provided with a suitable set of drawers or other desk devices on one or both sides of the well. The well and cabinet are provided with a rear wall 4 and eX tending across the front of the well is provided a platform support 5. The open top of the well is closed by a cover 6 provided with a vertical end piece 7 rigidly secured to the cover and adapted to close the space between the upper surface of the well and the support 5 when in closed position. The cover is supported inclosed position and also in the opening and closing movement by a pulley 8 and Vthe pulley mounting piece 9 secured on the wall of the well. On the rear end of the cover is provided a counter-weight 10 and the rear end of the cover is connected by a flexible connection l1 passing about the pulley 8 with the inner end of the platform 12.
The platform is provided on its inner end with a piece of vertical wall 13 adapted to' close, in connection with the cover, the top of the desk when the cabinet is in open position. The outer end of the platform 12 rests on the platform support 5 and is connected with the cabinet by a brace 14 pivoted to the cabinet below the bearing 5 and to the platform.
For holding the cover and directing the movement of its outer end, I provide a brace 15 hinged to the wall of the cabinet at 16 just below the line of the cover and in such a position that the cover will rest on the end of the arm wlien in closed position and it will act as a middle support therefor. The outer end of the arm or lever 15 is pivoted to the part 7 of the cover at 17 in a recess 18 in the edge of the piece 7 to permit the swinging movement of the lever with reference to the cover. The cover is guided to and held in its open position by a roller 2O projecting from one of the Walls of the well. The roller and pivotal arm 15 operating together hold the cover in steady position in the rear of the well.
The operation of the device is too obvious to Warrant description. It may, however, be remarked that as the cover is opened the typewriter and platform are brought into operative position and as the cover is closed the typewriter platform automatically assumes its closed or folded position. It is preferable to operaterthe device entirely from the cover. It will also be noted that in open position the rear wall of the typewriter platform engages with the front wall 7 on the cover and in connection with the typewriter platform entirely closes the `top of the well. The counterweight 10 on the rear end of the platform is provided for the purpose of equalizing the Weight as between the cover and typewriter platform and typewriter mounted thereon so that very slight effort is required to open or close the cabinet; and;r in open position, the counter-weight inconnection with the weight of the cover supports the inner end of the platform. .A
What I claim as new,`and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a typewriter cabinet, a well, a platform support in the front of the well, a platform sliding and tilting over the support, a brace pivoted` below thetsupport to the cab- IOO inet and to the platform, a swinging and sliding cover adapted to close the top of the well, a pulley secured in the top of the well and by which the cover is supported in closed position and over which it is moved in opening and closing, a ieXible connection between the inner end of the platform and the rear end of the cover also passing over the pulley,
and an arm pivoted to the cabinet, substan tially midway between front and rear and to the forward end of the cover, combined substantially as set forth.
2. In a typewriter cabinet having a well, a platform support spanning the front of the well, a movable platform sliding and tilting over the support, a brace pivoted to the cabinet below the support and to the typewriter platform, a vertical end wall on the inner end of the platform, a cover adapted to close the top of the well having a rigid section of front secured on the front end of the cover, a pulley secured in the well at its top in position to act as a support for the cover in closed position, a swinging arm pivoted to the cabinet substantially midway between the front and rear of the opening at the top of the well and to the projecting front wall on the front of the cover, and a flexible connection passing over the pulley and connecting the rear end of the cover with the inner end of the platform, combined substantially as set forth.
3. In a typewriter cabinet having a well, the combination of the platform support in the front of the well, a platform adapted to slide and tilt over the support, a brace pivoted below the support at one end and to the platform at the other end, an end wall 13 on the inner end of the platform, acover adapted to close the opening in the top of the well and provided with a rigid angular portion on the front of wall 7, an arm 15 pivoted to the part 7 and to the cabinet at a point substantially `midway between front and rear of the opening in the top of the cabinet,a pulley hanger secured in the top of the well and adapted to act as a support for .the cover in closed position, a pulley7 in the hanger a flexible connection connecting the inner end of the platform with the rear end of the cover and passing over the pulley, and a guide and holding roller adapted to guide the cover into its open position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
