PATENT OFFICE.
.ARTHUR E. ARNOLD, 0F LLANDUDNO, WALES- COAL CABINET, SCUTTLE, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application led October 23, 1919. ySerial No. 332,728.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR EDMUND ARNOLD, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, and resident of Llandudno, in the county of Carnarvon, Principality of Wales, have invented certain new and u seful Improvements in or Connected with Coal Cabinets, Scuttles, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coal cabinets,
scuttles, and the like.
The invention has for its primary object to provide an improved coal cabinet, scuttle or box which is highly eflicien't in use, can be easily and quickly filled or loaded, and from which the coal can be removed for use with much greater facility than with the cabinet scuttles and boxes heretofore provided.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a'cabinet, scuttle or box from which a shovelful or small quantity of coal can be removed without having to tip over and support the whole weight of the cabinet, scuttle or box and its contents or to remove said shovel from the'bulk of the coal, which procedure nearly always entails a considerable amount of labor and strength and is often attended by the upsetting of small pieces of coal or coal dust out of the container onto the floor.
According to the invention the improved cabinet, scuttle or box comprises a compartment to receive the bulk of the coal and a device adapted to communicate with said compartment and receive therefrom a more or less small or moderate and measured or restricted quantity of coal, from which device the coal is removed as and when required, said device being automatically refilled from the compartment after each use of the cabinet, scuttle or box and each'removal of coal therefrom.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood and more readily carried into effect, it is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which v Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a coal cabinet or scuttle, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of same.
Fig. 3 is a section through the door, showing the means for supporting the coal box.
As shown and in a suitable manner of carrying out the invention in connection with a coal cabinet the same comprises a -wooden or other cabinet proper or case a the front of which is formed with two openings disposed one above the other, and in each of said openings is fitted a door or Hap and c which is pivoted at Z9 c respectively to the sides of the cabinet or case a so as to open vertically and swing outwardly and downwardly to a limited extent approximately to a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in the drawing.
lA stationary wooden or other baille or shelf d is fitted within the cabinet or case, inclines as shown downwardly and rearwardly, and extends across the interior of said cabinet or case a and fromv a point near the lower edge b2 of the upper opening to a point disposed half-way or thereabout, between the front and rear of the said cabinet or case. The upper door or flap Z) is adapted to support a coal box or receptacle e which is preferably formed as a separate article and designed, after having been filled with coal, to be slid into position on said door or flap b when the latter is open or pulled out. To facilitate the positioning of the coal box or receptacle e upon the door or flap the upper surface of the latter may although not as shown, be fitted with a number of rollers upon which said coal box or receptacle can run. As shown in Fig. 3 the door is shown as provided with offset flanges fl, to slidably receive lips f2, the bottom of the box resting against block f, to retain and support the coal box or receptacle c on the door. If desired, however, the coal box or receptacle may be permanently secured to the door or flap. Y Y
Then the upper door of the flap Z) is closed the coal falls out of the coal box or receptacle c into a compartment g formed by the major portion of the interior of the cabinet or case and onto a second stationary baille or shelf 71. serving as the bottom of said compartment, which baffle or shelf /L extends across said interior of the cabinet or case a and inclines as shown forwardly and downwardly and from the rear of same to a point disposed toward the front of the cabinet or case.
On the inside of the lower door or flap c is provided a measuring device consisting of a portion of said door or flap c, side plates i, an inclined false bottom plate y' and a rear arcuate plate 7c curved on a radius having for its center the axis of the pivots c of the door or flap c. When the door or remains in running contact with or in closev proximity to said edge. lilith this construction it will be'appreciated that in the normal closed position of the lower door or flap the measuring device is disposed within the lcabinet or case ct and in open communication with the main compartment g and the bulk ot' the coal therein and thus a limited amount of coal, determined by the capacity of said device, falls into the latter from said compartment and the lower baille or shelf. As the door or llapr is opened and the measuring device is moved outward the rear arcuate' plate 7c lisolates and cuts olf the contents of said device from the bulk of the coal in the main pompartment and prevents said bulk alling'out of the cabinet or case. In the open position the measuring device shown in dotted lines, all or the major portion ot the coal therein can be easily removed with a'shovel, the door or llap c serving. as a convenient shoveling platform. When the door or flap c is again closed another limited quantity of coal automatically slides down the lower baille or shelf t into the measuring device inf readiness for the next shoveling operation, and this procedure continues as often as it is required to remove a limited quantity oi coal from the cabinet or case and until the latter is empty.
A drawer Z is preferably fitted lin the Acabinet or case andnnder the measuring device to catch any coal dust that may iind its way downward past the arcuate plate and/or other parts of said device. lso a shelf m is fitted inside the lower portion oi' the cabinet to hold a shovel a so that it can be easily reached when the lower door is opened. l
i desired more than two inclined ballles or plates may be provided within the cabinet or case a to check the l'a-ll voll the coal' from the coal box or receptacle and into the main compartment and the measuring device and to locate it within said compartment. One or more spring-.controlled and pivoted or` slidable plates, and/or one or more fixed vertical plates may be provided within the cabinet or case, such as on the lower or inner edge ,ol the upper baille or shelf, to stack the coal within the cabinet or case and thus increase the capacity of the latter' without interfering with the free movementfof the coal into the measuring device. Other modilications may be made in the general construction and arrangement of parts orP the improved cabinet, scuttle or box without departing from the principles oi the invention set ont above.
What I claim is l. A coal cabinet having an upper opening provided with a closure, a main coal receptacle` supported on said closure, said cabinet having a lower opening provided with a closure, a coal receiving member supported on, andmovable with, said lower closure, land an inclined baille arranged in the cabinet to receive material from the receptacle on the upper closure, and deliver said material to the coal receiving member.
2. A coal cabinet formed with upper and loweil openings provided with swinging closures, a main coal box carried by the upper closure, and having an opening to deliver thematerial from said box when the latter is within the cabinet, a baille plate arranged in the cabinet below said main coal box, and adapted to receive the material from the latter, and a coal receiving member `carried by the lower closure, and movable therewith, said member being movable into and out of a position relative to the baille to receive a quantity 4of coal from such batlle and to serve as a cnt oft for coal delivery rom the baille. Y
3. A coal cabinet formed with upper and lower openings provided with swinging closures, a main coal box carried by the upper closure, andhaving an opening` to deliver the material from said box when the latter is within the cabinet, a battle plate arranged in the cabinet belowsaid main coal box, rand adapted to receive the maf terial from the latter, and a coal reffeiving member .carried by the lowerl closure, and movable therewith, said member being movable into and out of a position relative to the baille to receivea quantity of coal from such baille and to serve as a cnt olf for coalV delivery from the baille, and a drawer .mounted lin the cabinet, and arranged beneath said coal receiving member to receive the coal dust incident to the passage of coal 'from the baille to said member.
In testimony whereofY l have hereunto signed my name.y
ARNOLD.
