COAL-DELIVERY WAGON.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1907.
Patented March 24, 19 08.
Serial NO. 362,538.
To all 107mm. it may concern:
Be it known that I, J nnnnmn CAMPBELL, of Providence, in'the county of Providence and State of llhode Island, a citizen of the United States, have invented. a new and use-' filllllllJl'O'VGIl'lGllll in Coal-Delivery Vl agons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in. explaining its nature.
My invention consists 'primaril y in a coal delivery wagon from which coal is delivered at the side of the wagon so that it is unnecessary to back up the wagon in order to deliver the coal. 3
My invention consists, also; in a delivery wagon having a plurality of compartments from each one of which coalmay be delivered so'that the wagon may carry di'll'erent kinds of coal at the same time.
My invention consists also in various details of construction all of which. can best be seen and understood by reference to the draw ings in ivhich- Figure 1 is aside elevation of a wagon em bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Figs 3 is a horizontal section on the-line 3- 3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged details of construction to which especial reference will be made. Fig. 6 shows'mainly in side elevation a portion of a wagon showing a further embodiment of my invention to .which special reference will hereinafter be made. Fig. 7 shows a cross section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings :-A represents awagon the running gear of which supports a body B which by! means of a partition 0 and folding doors C C hinged to the partition by the hinges c, is divided into separate compartments or bins I), D These compartments have floors or bottoms d and (1', respectively, inclined towards the outlets of the compartments, and it is these outlets from the compartments which the folding doors (J are adapted to close. These doors when closed occupy an inclined position so that when the doors are opened they will swing but a short distance bplow the lower ends of the inclined bottoms to the separate c mpartments and not to interfere with the chute into which the compartments empty. ()n this account the doors are hinged to the partition 0 at a point ing door G in place toclose the chute. .arm 9 mounted on one end of the rod giproas the doors are hinged at a point not only above but beyond the lower ends of themclined bottoms to the respective compartments they hang normally in a vertical, open position. with respect to the outlets to the compartments. in their closed position and each door is so The foldin doors are shown held by means of a series of fingers e, each of which is attached to a rod E mounted in eyes 6 one on each side of the body of the wagon.
Therod E passes out through one side of the body of t e wagon and connects outside thereof with a handle e which, when the- Both compartments 1) and D empty into a common delivery chute F, the ipclined bottom f of which leads to the side of the wagon. The lower end of the chute F is closed by a swinging door which is hung from the bottom of the wagon at the top of the chute by hinges g. The door is provlded with a locking means consisting of a rod 9 hung in eyes 9 dependent from the lower end of the chute. The rod g carries fingers 9 adapted as shown inl ig. 2 to hold the swing An jects upward and is connected by a hook g with an eye 9 on the under part of the body of the wagon.
outward and the door G released to open allowing the load from the chute to pass out.
In addition the door G has the usual slide customary in the tail-board of coal and other wagons. This slide is shown. at II confined in ways formed by'the strips h, the slide be ing provided with a handle 71. so that it may be moved up and down. This slide may be used when the coal is to be unloaded by basket. a
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a wagon having a plurality of coal carrying compartments and chutes leading to different or 0pposite sides of the Wagon.
The coal carrying compartments are D and l) before described separated by the partition C and with the outlets of the com- This hook y can be readilyunhooked so that the arm 9 may be swung per to the opposite sides of the wagon.
F hinged at the point f into the chutes F F released to open (see Fi 7).
extends through the si e wall of the 'chute' partments closed by the swinging doors C 0 respectively. Both the compartments D and D empty into what may be termed a combined hopper and chute F; a hopper inthe sense that it receives the coal from the several compartments preparatory to its delivery from the wagon, and a chute that it properly directs and assists in the delivery of the coal into the chutes F and F extending from the l ilcilp- 1s hopper F is preferably made V-shaped with inclined sides f and f prise in part folding doors f, f, which are 5 and open outwardly These doors are shown closed, which is their normal position, and they are held so closed, but so as to be released to open in the following manner 2 Fastened to the upper end of each door, or rather to. a lug f projecting therefrom, isa chain f. This chain is adapted to be wound upon or unwound from a shaft f by which means the,d0or is closedand held closed, or
F or-F with which it connects, and on the outer end of the shaft, outside the chute, is
a gear Meshing with this gear is a ear f arranged on the end of a shaft f w ich extends toward the side-of the Wagon and is journaled in a proper fixture of support f secured to the body of the wagon. The ends of the shaft f are accessible from the sides of the wagon and are adapted to receive instruments by which the shaft may be turned so operating the folding doors as aforesaid.
As said before, the chutes F F lead, respectively, to opposite sides of-the wagon so that as one door or the other door, f, is opened the coal W'l be directed into one chute or the other and thereby be delivered from the corresponding side of the wagon. In this connection it is to be noted. that the sides of the hopper F preferably have the same inclination as the bottom f 13 and f 14 of the chutes F, F extending from the hopper, so that when one door of the hopper is opened These sides 'com- Each shaft is delivered from the wagon and moved ofi to the place of final discharge, or the coal may be discharged by lifting the door'G, as
above described.
The advantage of this wagon will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The wagon is driven to the curb for unloading like any express or grocers wagon. It may bring two kinds of fuel to the same house-or it may bring a load of fuel to one house and after delivering it carry the contents of its other bin to another place of delivery, or both bins may be filled with the same coal for the same location.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A wagon having a plurality of coal-can rying compartments, a hopper common to said compartments, releasable means closing each of said compartments from said hopper, a chute leading from said hopper, and releasable means closing said hopper from said chute. v
2. A wagon having a plurality of coal-carrying compartments, a hopper common to said compartments into which the coal empties therefrom, releasable means closing each of said compartments from said hopper, a plurality of delivery chutes leading from said hopper, and releasable means closing said hopper from each of said chutes.
JEREMIAH CAMPBELL.
