UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GEOMEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MALT-KILNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,583, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GEOMEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Malt-Kilns; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the drawings aforesaid, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention 5 Fig. 2,-a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section at the line 00 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a section at the line g in said Fig. 2.
A represents a suitable wall, inclosing the operating parts of my invention, and B are perforated floors, upon which the malt is placed for drying.
The said floors are pivoted or supported upon each side upon bearings I), as shown, so as to be tipped up when desired, as hereinafter specified.
At the opposite ends of alternate floors there is left a space between the floors and the wall of the kiln, to allow the heat to pass up over the malt, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3.
The sides of the floors B are all connected by means of wires or jointed rods, (marked (1 0,) as shown.
To the wire or rod 0 is attached a weight, W, which operates to hold the floors in a horizontal position against the cleats (marked 0) attached to the walls, as shown.
When it is desired to give the floors an inclined position, the object is accomplished by drawing down upon the cord d.
(t represents a series of doors opening into each compartmentof the kiln, to allow the malt to be properly spread upon the floors and examined from time to time, as desired.
The malt is introduced into the kiln by being delivered in the spout 0, there being suitable openings into the kiln therefrom, (marked D,) the grain being delivered into the top of said passage by an elevator, or in any other suitable manner.
E represents two slides or cutoffs used in filling the kiln, as follows In filling the lower floor, both slides are withdrawn, and the malt runs down through the opening D until the lower floor is filled, when a slide is inserted in the passage 0, forming a false bottom, leading into the second compartment, as shown. When the second floor is filled, another slide is inserted between the second and third openings D, conducting the malt upon the third floor, and when this is filled, the first slide is Withdrawn and placed in the next slot in the passage O,.and so on until all the floors are filled.
WVhen the malt has become dried, or needs stirring, it is precipitated into the hopper F by drawing upon the rod or cord (7, which inelines said floors, so as to discharge the malt as aforesaid, which passes out from the kiln through the spout f.
If not sufficiently dried, it may be carried up, as before described, and redistributed upon the floors of the kiln, and the process continued.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a malt-kiln, the arrangement of a series of perforated floors, operating substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. In combination with the above, the employment of a vertical passage, (J, a series of openings, D, and one or more slides, E, arranged and operating substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
J OS. GEOMEN.
