APPLICATION FILED MAY 19, 1911.

.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDOLF PETERSON, OF SALEM, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN CASE & REGISTER COMPANY, OF SALEM, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FOLLOW-BLOCK FOR DOCUMENT-FILES.
To a// whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FREnoLr PETERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Salem, Columbiana county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Follow-Blocks for Document-Files. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of fol low blocks, specifically designed for use in document files wherein it is desired to hold the documents in compact form, but at the same time permit the documents to be released so that any particular document may be withdrawn or moved for any purpose. T he follower is formed of a length to correspond substantially with the width of the receptacle in which the documents are filed, one of the objects being to provide means to hold the follower at any predetermined point within the limits of its movement and another object being whereby the follower block can be readily released and moved at pleasure.
The invention consists in certain features of novelty, by which the above objects are accomplished as hereinafter described.
In the drawingsFigure l is a detached perspective view of the follower block. Fig. is a longitudinal section showing aportion of an ordinary document file and illustrating the follower block in position to properly clamp and hold the documents in comparatively compact condition. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the document file showing the follow block in clamped or locked position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the follow block and 2 its supporting base or flange. The document receptacle 3 is of the ordinary construction and may be of any desired size, reference being had to the kind of documents designed to be filed. The base 2 of the follow block is designed to rest upon the bottom of the receptacle 3 and. for the purpose of allowing the follow block 1. to incline slightly forward or out of a true vertical position, said follow block is located at an acute angle to the base 2 One end of the follow block 1 is provided with the knobs or contact points l, which are preferably formed of rubber or like material so as to Specification of Letters Patent.

provide the proper adhesiveness to prevent the follow block from slipping or sliding upon the inner vertical surface of the receptacle 3 against which the knobs are pressed, the opposite end of the follow block is provlded with the cam 5 which is pivotallv attached to the back of the follow block 1 and is provided with the handle 6, which handle is set out or away from the back of the follow block so as to give proper clearance and to bring the same into proper position to be easily actuated. lVhen it is desired to lock or more specifically set the follow block at any desired point, the handle 6 is brought into a horizontal position or substantially so, at which time the cam 5 is brought into proper contact with the inner surface of the side of the receptacle opposite from that upon" which the knobs 4 are brought and by pressing the handle the cam will have a tendency to force the follow block endwise, which endwise movement sets the knobs l in close contact with the inner surface of one of the vertical sides of the receptacle. WVhen it is desired to release the follow block the handle 6 is moved upward, thereby releasing the cam from against the inner face of the vertical side, at which time the follow block is free to be moved or slid at any desired point and again looked as above described by a downward movement of the handle 6.
It will be understood that the cam should be pivotally connected to the follow block preferably by means of a screw 7 or its equivalent, said screw being so located that the proper eccentric movement can be given to the cam 5.
Having fully described by invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a follower for document files the combination of a document receptacle, a document block provided with a base and the follower block inclined forward of a vertical line, said follower block provided with frictional knobs at one of its ends, the opposite end thereof provided with a cam, said cam pivotally connected to the follower block and its contact edge adapted to be extended beyond the end of the follower block opposite that provided with the friction knobs, said cam provided with a handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
2. In a document file, the combination of a and the handle connected to said cam, sub- 0 document receptacle, a follower provided stantially as and for the purpose specified. with a supporting base, said follower pro- In testimony that I claim the above, I vided with contact knobs upon one of its have hereunto subscribed my name in the ends, said knobs adapted foroontact with the presence of two witnesses.
adjacent side of the document receptacle, the FREDOLF PETERSON. opposite end of the follower provided with Witnesses:
a cam, said cam adapted for contact with the R. S. KAYLER,
opposite side of the document receptacle H. L. \VEAVER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
