FILING-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Application filed October 4, 1910, Serial No. 585.170. Renewed September 6, 1912. Serial No. 719,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FRANK DUN- EAVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ilingCases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to filing cases of that class which comprise a holder or box within which is arranged a follower that is adjustable to suit the size of the contents of the holder with provision for securing the follower in its adjusted position so that the pressure of the contents of the holder on the follower will not displace the latter and said contents will be held properly within the holder.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved filing case of this type and one wherein the follower may be quickly released and adjusted.
My improved filing case comprises a holder, a clamp slidably connected with the holder, a clamp operating member movably connected with the clamp and a follower connected with the clamp operating member, the parts being so arranged that when the clamp is unset, said clamp, the operating member and the follower may be adjusted back and forth and when set said parts are locked to the holder.
The distinguishing feature of my improved filing case is the provision of a clamp operating member connected with the follower and clamp so that the latter operates responsively to the tilting movements of the follower, the clamp being unset when the follower is moved in one direction and set when the follower is moved in the opposite direction, and the pressure of the contents of the holder on the follower tending to tilt the latter in a direction to hold the clamp set.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a filing case embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the filing case shown in Fig. 1, showing the slidable clamp and the clamp operating member. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but with the clamp operating member broken away in part. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the clamp operating member. 'Flg. 5 1s a sec tion on the line 55 of Fig. 1, showing the clamp in its unset position. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but showing the clamp in its set position. Fig. 7 shows in side elevation the sliclable clamp, the clamp operating member and a part of the follower that is fastened to the latter.
Having reference to the drawings, A is the box or holder forming part of my improved filing case; B the clamp slidably connected with the holder A; C the clamp operating member, and D the follower.
E represents the usual removable rod for fastening cards within the holder A.
The bottom of the box A is made with a longitudinal slot or groove a, within which is arranged the clamp B. The clamp B comprises a body I) provided at each side with a wing or lip b, and these two lips extend under the side edges of slot at and into grooves a formed at each side of the slot. Also the body Z2 is made with two clamping jaws b which are flexibly connected at 6* with the body b so that said jaws may be spread apart and allowed to spring together to set and unset the clamp by bending at b. Each jaw' b is made with a pair of wings which embrace the adjacent edge of the slot at, the wings b and Z serving to slidably hold the clamp in slot a of the holder A by engagement with the edges or sides of said slot. At h the body I) is recessed or bent downwardly to provide a passage across the body 6 for the rod E.
At one end the clamp body I) carries a pintle which pivotally connects the clamp operating member C to the clamp B. The clamp operating member C is a metal plate provided with pintle sockets 0 to receive the pintle b and perforations c to receive screws 0 by means of which the follower D is secured rigidly to said clamp operating member 0. Also this clamp operating member is made with a pair of downwardly extending wings a which are perpendicular or vertical at their ends 0 but diverge outwardly toward their ends 0 It will thus be seen that when the clamp operating member O is lifted on the pintle 6 into the position shown in Figs. 5 and 7 the jaws b will spring inwardly and the clamp will be unset, but when the clamp operating member C is'swung on pintle b downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 the diverging Wings 0 will wedge the jaws b outwardly against the edges of said slot or as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, thereby setting the clamp and locking the follower D in position. The jaws b are bordered at their inner sides by depending flanges or lips 7)8 so that as the lower edges of the wings 0 pass below the plane of the top of the jaws Z2 they remain in contact with the lips or flanges b and the clamping pressure is thereby sustained. The clamp B and its operating member C are so arranged with relation to the contents of the holder A, inclicated at a", that the pressure of the latter on the follower D tends to hold the clamp set. When, however, it is desired to unset the clamp to shift the follower along the slot a, this may be accomplished by a slight forward movement of the follow-er D on pintle sufficient to relieve the pressure of the jaws 6 upon the sides of the slot at. The
' clamp B frictionally engages the sides of the slot a when it is set, and therefore the follower D is held in place through that frictional engagement, but it will be clear that the follower D of my improved filing case does not itself frictionally engage the holder A. That is, in my improved filing case the follower D is held in place by the friction between the adjustable followercarrying clamp slide B and the casing of the holder A, and the clamping eifect is produced by the tilting movements of the follower acting through the clamp operat ing member C.
lVhat I claim is 1. A filing case comprising a holder; a clamp slidably connected with the holder comprising two opposed relatively movable jaws for engaging a fixed part of said holder; a jaw operating member movably connected with the clamp, and a follower connected with the jaw operating member, the jaw operating member being arranged between the two jaws of the clamp so as to move said jaws relatively to set and unset the clamp when the follower is tilted bodily.
2. A filing case comprising a holder, a clamp slidably connected with the holder; a wedge shaped clamp operating m mber pivotally connected with the clamp, nd a follower connected with the clamp operating member.
3. A filing case comprising a holdtr; a clamp slidably connected with the holder comprising two separated jaws; a wedge shaped clamp operating member pivotally connected with the clamp and adapted when swung on said pivot to be moved into and out of position between said jaws so as to set and unset the clamp, and a follower connected with the'clamp operating member.
4:. A filing case comprising a holder made with a longitudinal slot; a clamp slidably mounted in said slot and comprising a pair of aws for engaging the sides of the slot;
a clamp operating member pivotally connected to the clamp and adapted to be swung into and out of position between the jaws to set and unset the clamp, and a follower connected with the clamp operating member.
'5. A filing case comprising a holder made with a longitudinal slot; a clamp slidably mounted in said slot, said .clamp being made with wings engaging the sides of the slot so as to hold the clamp in place within the I latter and with a pair of jaws for engaging the sides of the slot; a wedge shaped clamp operating member pivotally connected to the clamp and adapted to be swung into and out of position between the jaws to set and unset the clamp, and a follower con nected with the clamp operating member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of September, 1910.
