` Be it known that I, EDWARD J. SONNEN- nURG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, county of San Diego, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fixtensible Springs for Bookbinders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to springs made of` two or more pieces, the one overlapping the other, and provided with means for holding them in certain relative positions, but allowing them to slide endwise relatively to each other, and one of the uses for which it may particularly be used is for holding the leaves in a loose leaf binder for books, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a spring which is automatically extensible and contractible simultaneously with the thing in connection with which it is. used, second, to provide a spring for loose leaf binders which will expand and contract with the size of the book binder and also has a certain curved spring adapted to provide a bow for the back of the leaves of the book, so as to allow them to be opened, thus allowing the use of a larger proportion of the leaf surface than where a straight connection piece is used, third, to provide a spring of this class which is simple, easily constructed, durable and easily installed for use, and fourth, to provide a spring of this kind in which an adjusting screw may be used for holding the separate pieces in certain relative positions endwise if desired.

With these and other objects in viewas will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which:

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. The spring piece l, spring piece 2, rivet 3, rivet 4,. and adjusting bolt 5 constitute the principal parts of my spring structure.

he spring piece l, is provided with a longitudinal slot la and in one end is mounted a rivet 4 which is provided with a head at one end, spaced apart from said spring piece approximately the thickness of said spring. The spring 2 is also provided with a slot 2@L and it is provided on one of its ends with a similar rivet. The spaced apart portion of the rivet head is preferably formed after the slot on one of the springs is placed over the rivet on the other spring as shown in the drawings. In these Vtwo slots in the spring pieces 1 and 2 is placed, when it is desired to hold the springs in certain relative positions lengthwise, an adjustable bolt 5 provided with a nut which ,is adapted to clamp the two spring pieces l and 2 together and cause them to be held in their relative positions by friction.

In the modified form of the structure shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, instead of the rivets 4 used in the ends of the spring pieces the ends are provided with laterally extending lugs integral therewith which are bent over the other spring forming a loop in which the other spring reciprocates.

This spring may be used for a large variety of purposes one of which I have illustrated in Figs. 9 and l0, in which it is shown used in connection with a loose leaf book binder for holding the leaves which provides a readily extensible means for holding the leaves together, which also allows a bow shape to the leaves as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 9, which is very desirable in these loose leaf book binders, so as to allow a larger portion of the surface of the leaves to be seen than is possible with the straight holding piece.

Though I have shown and described a particular construction of spring and a slightly inodiiied form therefrom, I do `not Wish to be limited to these particular constructions, but desire to include in the purvieiv of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as described in the appended claims.

It will be readily seen that with this structure there is provided a spring that is readily extensible and contractible with any object with which it is used, that it may be adjusted and set so as to prevent the parts moving relatively'to each other in a lon-gitudinal direction if desired, that there is provided by this spring a means for holding the leaves in loose leafv book binders which is very simple and eiiieient, easily installed and durable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.y A; spring comprising a plurality of spring members each provided With a longitudinal slot therein, and means in said slots 'for holding them in sliding relation to each other and for securing them rigidly together when desired.

2. A spring comprising a spring member provided with a slot longitudinally therein, another spring member provided with a slot longitudinally therein, a rivet in the end of each spring member extending through the slot in the other end and provided with a head adapted to hold said spring members together but to move relatively in a longitudinal direction, and a bolt adapted to it into the slots in said springs adapted to clamp said pieces together.

3. In combination with a loose leaf binder for books, an extensible spring rigidly mounted on the movable sides of said book binder extending across and adapted to hold the loose leaves of the book, and means for holding said springs in certain. relative positions longitudinally if desired.
