SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. l740,118, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed April 5, 1902. Serial No. 101,604. (No model.)`

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, NORMAN P. Goonnnn LOW, a citizenv of thev United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears-Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object 0f my invention is to provide simple, cheap, and eective devices for sharpening shears or scissors which can be easily and satisfactorily operated by any one. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of said invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing its application to a pair of scissors. Fig. 3 is an edge View of said Sharpener. Fig. 4 is a similar view involving a slight modification of the same.

In the drawings, A represents a short section of an ordinary flat' file, which maybe of anysuitable proportions,butwhich for greater convenience in handling I prefer to makeV about two inches long and one inch wide and with the teeth arranged thereon at an langle of forty-five degrees.

B represents the gage, which is to be applied to this file for the purpose of enabling p the blade of the shears or scissors to be held at a suitable angle to the ile,'so as yto get the proper bevel to its-cutting edge when being sharpened. This gage consists of a flat strip of metal of about one inch in Width, which is bent so as to form a tube or band that surrounds said iile transversely, but has its ends terminate within a short distance of each other. The dimensions of this tubular construction of the gage are such that it presses tightly against the upper and lower surfaces of the file but I preferY to make ythe distance between the bends thereof such thatthe file can have a limited amount of lateral adj ust ment in the'gage. end is extendedand bent in an upward in# clined direction to form theI guard b, against which the blade of the shears or scissors C is held while being sharpened, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In operation the nat engaging surface of the blade of the shears or scissors is placed against the under inclined side of the guard h with its beveled cutting edge resting on the le, and .then the ile and gage are reciprocated back and forth until the blade is sufficiently sharpened. In order to prevent any lateral movement of the file in the gage, an ordinary wedge D, of wood or other material, may be inserted between the side edge of the iile and the bend of the gage, as shown, or, if desired, the relative positions of the gage and .le may be determined by the employment of gage-screws d cl, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The object in providing for this lateral adj ustability ofthe file in the gage is to permitv of new engaging surface of thefile Vto be presented to the work when the old is guard b and the return-bend of the gage, with which said guard is connected, so as to make it possible for the gage at the foot of the guard to press the harder against the ile.

'It is apparent that my invention can be used in conjunction with other kshaped files than that described and shown. All such modifications of the shape of the gage as would be required to accommodate the Videa to such dilferent shapes I desire tobe considered as contemplated within the spirit of my invention.

What I claim as new 4is- 1. As an article of manufacture, a gage for a shears and scissors Sharpener comprising a rectangular band of iiat metal the ends of which terminate within a short distance of each other, and one of said ends is extended and bent outward at a suitable angle, andthe intermediate po'i'tion between said outwardlybent ,portion and the return-bend of the band with which it is directly connected is bowed outward.
