Description

(NotModeL) F. A. JACOB & W. M. & L. H. LEVEY.
BANK OHBGK FILE. No. 385,415. Patented July 3, 18881.
NITED STATES FRANK A. JACOB, WILLIAM M. LEVEY, AND LOUIS H. LEVEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BANK-=CHECK FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,415, dated July 3, 1888.
Application filed January 23, 1888. Serial No. 161,805. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, FRANK A. J A0013, WIL- LIAM M. LEVEY, and LOUIS H. LEVEY, citizens of the United States, residing at I ndianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank-Check Files, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a convenient means of filing away bank papers (as checks, drafts, notes, 850.) in such a manner that all may be held in a compact form, when desired, or that any one may be readily separated from the file when so desired. IVe accomplish this object in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved check-file. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the follower and locking device.
In said drawings, a represents a rectangular box, the sides of which are grooved longitudinally, as shown at c. The bottom is also grooved longitudinally through the center at b. A metallic rod, (2, is buried in groove 72, being rigidly supported at each end. Upon this rod as a guide are fixed and moved or locked at will the follower e and locking device, as shown in Fig. 2.
e is the follower, preferably made of the same material as the box, and of such asize as to move easily between the sides of the box. A metallic slide, it, is firmly attached to the follower c, and is closely fitted to the rod d, making a long bearing upon said rod. The follower c is thus securely held in a vertical position. A cam-lever, z, is pivoted in said slide it in such manner as to bind closely upon rod (1 when held outward from the follower 6; but when held in against said follower it will release the rod and allow the follower to be easily moved. The cam is kept engaged with the rod normally by means of a spring, k, and the follower is thus locked at any point in the length of the-box that is desired.
A number of partitions, preferably made of paper-board and lettered alphabetically or printed with the names of customers, as the case may be, are placed between the smooth side of the follower and the end of the box. Said partitions have projections upon each end, as shown at m, which enter grooves c c in the sides of the box.
The operation is as follows; The thumb of the operator is placed in the notch n in the follower. The fingers pressing upon the camlever 13 releases the follower from the rod, when it may be pushed backward away from the partitions. These may now be separated (the grooves c c and the corresponding projections on the partitions preventing them from being displaced) and the paper placed between them, or taken out for use, as may be desired. A simple push on the back of the follower compresses the partitions and their contents into a compact form, where they are held by the cam-lock until further use.
We are aware that cheek-files have been devised in which a series of movable partitions moving inside a box was used to keep separate the checks of different parties, and do not, therefore, broadly claim such a construe tion.
I/Ve claim as our invention- 1. As an improvement in check-files, a se ries of movable partitions having projections at either end, said projections adapted to slide in longitudinal grooves in the sides of the case, a follower, and a locking-device, con structed substantially as shown and described, for securing said partitions'and follower in place, as set forth.
2. [n a check-file, the combination, with the case, its partitions and follower, of a rod placed longitudinally in a groove in the bottom of the case, said follower being movable upon and supported by the rod, and alocking device consisting of a spring-actuated can] attached to and moving with the follower and engaging with the rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
