Be it known that I, JAMES H. RAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices for Bank-Checks, &c., of which the following is a specification.

' This invention belongs to that class of filing devices which comprise a case or drawer and a number of upright movable partitions arranged inthe case and forming pockets which are designed to receive vouchers or documents, such as bank-checks, notes, the.

It is the object of my invention to provide the partitions with reference-tabs which have a comparatively wide top face for receiving names or -other suitable designations and which at the same time permit practically as compact an arrangement of the partitions as ordinary thin or strip tabs having the designations on their sides.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 'l is p a perspective view of one of the drawers of a filing-cabinet provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of one of the partitions. Fig. 3 is an end view of the partition.

A is a drawer, case, or box which contains a number of thin upright partitions B, of paper-board or other suitable material, between which the checks, notes, or other vouchers are placed. In the construction shown in the drawings the partitions are provided at their ends with shoulders b, by which they are loosely supported upon horizontal ledges 0, arranged on the adjacent side Walls of the drawer. The partitions are removably retained in the drawer by a longitudinal rod D, arranged centrally in a slot in the bottom of the drawer and passing through eyes e at the loweredges of the partitions. The partitions can be slid or adjusted on this rod in awell-known manner and are held in their upright position by the customary follower or sliding abutment F. Ifdesired,thepartitionsinaybesupported and adjusted by any other suitable means, this feature forming no part of my present invention. Each partition is provided at its upper edge with a reference tab or block G,

which projects above the partition and is provided with an enlarged top face g, adapted to bear a name, numeral, or other suitable designation corresponding'with the checks or vouchers in the pocket of which the partition forms the front or rear wall. The blocks G are preferably triangular in cross-section and their narrow lower ends are of about the same thickness as the partitions, while their wide upper ends overhang or project beyond the sides of the partitions. They are preferably made of wood and secured to the partition by a strip of strong fabric g, extending over the top and sides of the block and having its end portions g glued to opposite sides of the partition.

The reference-tabs do not extend throughout the length of the partitions, but are only long enough to receive the desired designations, and the tabs of adjoining partitions are offset or arranged out of line with each other lengthwise of the case or drawer, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the walls or partitions of pockets containing but a few vouchers can be brought closely together Without interference of the tabs. The narrow bases of the tabs are only as m ueh wider than the partitions as the two thicknesses of the fabric strip g, and this arrangement permits adjoining partitions, which form the walls of empty or nearly empty pockets, to be placed so closely together that their tabs are practically in line with each other crosswise of the drawer, as illustrated by the tabs designated K. Monroe and L. Osborn in the drawings. In other Words, this improved construction and arrangement affords the advantage of wide upwardly-facing reference-tabs, and yet permits the use of comparatively thin partitions, thus rendering the file as compact as an ordinary file, having its partitions provided with thin or strip tabs which, owing to their narrowness, can receive designations only upon their sides.

I claim as my invention 1. A file comprising a case, drawer orcompartinent, and a number of thin partitions arranged in the same and each provided at its upper edge with a projecting designation tab or block shorter than the partition and having its top face constructed of greater width than the partition, the tabs of adjoining partitions being arranged out of line with each other lengthwise of the case and each tab terminating short of the ends of adjacent tabs, whereby the tabs of empty or nearly empty pockets of the file can be broughtpracticallyin alinement crosswise of the case, substantially as set forth.

2. A file comprising a case, drawer or compartment, and a number of thin partitions arranged in said case and each provided with a designation tab or block of triangular crosssection, shorter than the partition and having its upper fiat face arranged substantially at right angles to the partition and provided with a suitable designation, substantially as set forth.

3. A file comprising a case, drawer or compartment, and a number of thin partitions arranged in said case and each provided with a designation tab or block of triangular crosssection having its upper fiat face arranged substantially at right angles to the partition, and fastened thereto by a strip extending over the top and sides of the block and having its ends secured to opposite sides of the partition, substantially as set forth.

4:. A partition for a filing device, provided at its upper edge with a block of triangular cross-section having its apex or narrow end arranged adjacent to the upper edge of the partition and its Wide upper face arranged substantially at right angles to the partition and provided with a suit-able designation, substantially as set forth.
