To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, ROBERT EDWIN Asn- BRooK and MILTON HENRY INGRAM, of Paducah,in the county of McCracken and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Copy-'Book Cabinet, of which the following is a full,l clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to an improved copy book cabinet-or case, and it has for its object to provide a case or cabinet especially adapted for holding all kinds of copy books, the case belng so constructed that the said books will b e prevented from warping, twisting and gettlng out of shape, the leaves of the books belng likewise kept smooth and prevented from drawing up. The case or cabinet may in a measure take the place of a regular letter press, not especially for copying purposes but it may be used for ordinary letter copying if desired, the case being so constructed that a movable shelf will be employed in connection with a stationary shelf, the movable shelf be- 1ng guided by or carried to or from the stationary shelf in an expeditious and convenlent manner, the mechanism being at the exterior of the cabinet.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a partial front elevation and partial vertical section of the case or cabinet, the section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the case or cabinet, the casing or box being partially removed or broken away.

. In carrying out the invention the framework of the case or cabinet consists of two sides of skeleton construction, and shelves held between the two sides, the shelves being arranged in pairs, one shelf of each pair being stationary and the other adjustable to and from the stationary shelf. The end framing of the case or cabinet is best shown in Fig. 2, and ordinarily comprises two or more uprights, thr'eeof them being illustrated in the drawings, designated as 10,11 and 12. These uprights 'are connected at suitable intervals `in their length by cross bars 13, and the entire framing is usually so made that the infner face of the said framing will be smooth `or straight, or practically so.

In the further construction of the side framing a series of diagonal strips 14, is attached to the outer face of the standards or uprights 10, 11 and 12, extending across all of them, the said strips 14 being adapted primarily as `slide-ways for a wedge-shaped key or block 15, one of said keys or blocks being adapted to travel upon each slide-way.

A stationary shelf 16, is made to extend from one side framing to the other, being preferably located at or nearl the bottom portion of the cross bars 13, as shown in Fig. 1, and the diagonal strips or slide-ways 14 are made Abetween the uprights 10, 11 and 12, and rest upon the upper edges of the cross bars 13 and each shelf at its projecting end is provided with a strip, bar or plate 18, secured to the tongues thereof, extending from one tongue to the other and beyond the outer sides of the tongues across the front and rear uprights 10 and 12, as shown in Fig. 2. ,Thus it will be observed thata strip or bar 18 will be above each slide way 14, and that the wedge key or block 15, traveling on the slide-way will likewise engage with the bar or strip 18 on the shelf above that slide-way, as in the construction of the wedge-key or block the face adapted for engagement with the projecting end of ashelf is made straight., while the opposing face engaging with the slide-way 14 is made inclined.

It will readily\be observed that by pushing the wedge block inward from the front, for example in direction of the rear, the adjustable shelf will be elevated in a manner to compress the booksA located between the adj ustable and stationary shelves in a manner to hold said books iu perfect condition; but the wedge blocks may be reversed and operated in direction of the front instead of the rear in elevating the adjustable Shelf.

The framing and shelves above described are located in a case B of any approved construction, and the end portions of the case are provided with slots 20 produced diagonally therein, preferably upon the saine inclination as the slide-ways 14, one slot being located above each slide-way, and the shank of a button 2l is held to slide in each of the said slots 20, the said shank being secured to a wedge key or block in order that by manipulating the button the block may be moved likewise, and also to provide for the reversing of the block if desired.

The front of the casing may consist of a door 22, capable of being raised or lowered,

for hung upon hinges; and when the door is closed and the wedge blocks are in position to elevate the adjustable shelves, the wedgev blocks will cover the exposed portions of the slots 20 in the casing and thus render the cabinet dust-proof.

This copy book case or cabinet is intended for holding all kinds of copy books, preventing them frornwarping, twisting, or getting out of shape. It also keeps the leaves of the book smooth and from drawing up, as heretofore stated.

A separate space or compartment may be provided for each book or set of books, which will not be disturbed when other books in the case are to be placed in position or removed from the case.

The case or cabinet can be made of any size or of any material, and will be found exceedf ingly useful in business where letter-copying books are used, more especially in railroad offices using large letter copying books, or way bills, bill books, doc., or in the offices of express companies for the storing and preservation of large copying and invoice books.

It is also evident that the copy book case may be advantageously used in schools for preserving copying and other books in proper shape, and it may likewise be successfully employed in preserving stationery and like articles in proper order.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 1n a case or cabinet, a fixed shelf and an adjustable shelf, one located above the other, and wedge keys or blocks held to travel upon suitable supports and having supporting engagement with the adjustable shelf, the latter shelf being carried to or from the fixed shelf through the manipulation of the said wedge keys or blocks, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a case or cabinet, the combmation, with a side framing, a fixed. shelf secured` to said framing, and an adj ustableshelf carried by the framing and capable of movement to and from the xed shelf, of inclined slideways carried by the said framing, and Wedge keys or blocks supported by and having movement upon said slide-ways, and likewise having supporting engagement with the end portions of the adjustable shelf, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a case or cabinet, the combination, with side framing, a casing inclosing the framing, having openings in oppositesides, and a fixed shelf secured to the framing, of a shelf adjustable upon the framing and capable of movement to and from the fixed shelf, inclined slide-ways `located beneath each outer end of the adj ustableshelf, wedge keys or blocks held to travel upon the said inclined slide-ways and adapted for engagement with the outer ends of the adjustable shelf, the face of the key or block engaging with the slide-way beinginclined and that engaging with the adjustable shelf straight, and a device, substantially as described, counected with each wedge key or block and ex tending out through the slots inthe said casing, as specified.
