No./891,110. Specication of Letters Patent.
FILIELCASE.
Application led March 27, 1907. Serial No. 364,915.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States,.residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented certainnew yand useful lImprovements in File-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lile cases, and it has for its object to provide a file case of novel construction including a reinforced sheet metal box ondrawer and shelves contained therein, said shelves embodying novel label holding means.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, wherein reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a lile case constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a removable shelf included in the invention, and Fig. 5-is a plan view of the blank from which said shelf is constructed. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
The invention, in its Vpractical embodiment, comprises a rectangular box 1 having an open front end and a rear end wall 2. The
box 1 is preferably constructed of sheet.
metal and its rear end wall 2 is made in a separatesection soldered or otherwise secured to the box 1, and having angular flanges 3 overlying the sides of said box as reinforcing means. The side walls 4 of the box 1 are provided with spaced parallel outwardly extending depressions 5 affording longitudinal grooves, arranged in corres onding pairs, the grooves of each pair being 1sposed 1n coincident planes. At its front en the box 1 is reinforced by a surrounding strap 6, preferably soldered thereto and comprising a section of sheet metal having its sides bent coextensively upon themselves, as at 7, with their edges confronting one another.
Shelves 8 are supported in the box 1, one
above the other,y with their edges disposed in the grooves 5 of a corresponding pair. Each of said shelves is constructed of a sheet metal section of rectangular Ishape converginO towards a central point and bent vertica ly u on itself at its front edge to afford a vertica flangey .-9, the plies of which are spaced away from one anotherk to afford a narrow space 10 therebetween.
The blank from which each shelf 8 is constructed is formed with converging slits 11, as shown in Fig. 5. When the end of said blank is bent to form the flange 9, each slit 11 extends in opposite directions in the plies of said flange. A label 12 is designed to have its ends inserted through the slits 11 and into the space 10, said flange thus constituting a holder for each label.
' The shelves 8 in their superposed relation define independent compartments for the reception of' papers relative to dierent matters, such as individual accounts. The flange 9 incidentally serves as a shelf pull, and, owing to its construction, the labels 12 may be readily inserted and removed. It will be apparent that any number of grooves 5 and shelves 8 may be employed in accordance with the different individual matter filed in a single box 1. Itis preferred to so construct the boxes that any selected number may be iitted or locked together to form as an entirety a sectional file case. With this object in view plates 13 and 14 are secured by suitable fastening means 15 to the opposite sides of each box. formed centrally thereof with a longitudinal vertical groove 16 and the plate 14 is formed centrally thereof with a longitudinal dovetail projection 17 which is designed to interiit the groove 16 of the adjacent box. In this manner a continuous file case may be constructed step by step and the boxes individually or as an entirety may be closed by a flexible rolling metallic cover of conventional form and which it is not deemed y necessary to show.
A file case constructed 1n accordance w1th -this invention is inexpensive to manufacture, strong, owing to the provision of the depressions which serve as strengthening ribs, and practical.
