, CHARLES T. RIDGELY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OI-IIO, ASSIGN OR TO THE STAND- ARD TRIMMER COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed April 1e, 1907.
Application filed September Z4, 1906. Serial No. 335,854.
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern: p
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. RIDGELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain newF and useful Improvements in Paper-Hangers Smoothing-Rollers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to smoothing-rollers of the type ordinarily employed by paperhangers, and relates more particularly to the means for securing the roller proper to the handle. Rollers of this character are ordinarily constructed with the spindle or pivotlugs mounted in the roller proper and eX- tending beyond the ends thereof to engage the bearings in the handle member. This handle member or frame is usually constructed of steel or similar metal and is sprung sufficiently to allow the bearing lugs or pivots to be inserted in the bearings. These lugs can only wbe made of a length equal to the thickness of the handle-frame,
-owing to the liability to scratch or tear the paper when operating in corners or close quarters if the bearing-lug projects beyond the face of the frame. Owing to the limited length of the bearing-lugs, the frame is liable to become sprung or distorted and allow the lugs to slip out of the bearings and release the roller, causing much annoyance and delay.
To overcome these objections, I have provided a roller with the bearings formed in the roller itself and bearing lugs or pivots secured to the frame member and have provided means for detachably mounting the roller on these pivots or lugs.
I have further provided means for detachably connecting the handle proper to the frame portion thereof in order that the same may be disconnected in packing the same.
1 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a smoothing-roller embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the roller proper. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line of Fig. 4
` and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a fractional sectional viewl showing the detail construction of the roller proper. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the handle and supporting-frame with the roller removed. Fig. 6 is a fractional sectional view of the roller mounted in the supporting-frame.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the connecting-plate for the handle proper, and Fig. S is a detail view of the detachable pivot-lug and its supporting-plate.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in which the smoothing-roller proper is indicated by the reference numeral 1 and comprises a central body ortion 2, of wood or other suitable material, preferably cylindrical in form and provided about its cylindrical surface with a cushioning layer 3, of felt or similar material, over which is secured a removable cover A, of linen or cotton fabric or other suitable material. The body portion 2 is provided at either end with an annular recess 5, adapted to receive a ferrule 6, of metal or other suitable material, having a flange 7. To secure the cover 4 to the body portion 2, the cover is first placed over the roller with its end eX- tending beyond the end of the roller, as shown at 8. The extended end is then folded over the end of the roller, the ferrule 6 placed thereon and driven into the recess 5, carrying the fabric of the cover with it and drawing the same taut over the cushioning layer and securely fastening the same to the body portion of the roller. The body portion is further provided in either end thereof with central longitudinal recesses 9, provided with bushings 10, of brass or similar material.
The supporting member or frame com-- prises a yoke 11, having forwardly-extending ends 12 and 18, the end member 12 being provided with a bearing lug or pivot 14 and the end member 13 having an aperture 15 through the same. The detachable pivot-lug 16 is rigidly secured to a connecting-plate 17, which is provided with an extension or lip18, which is bent at right angles to the connecting-plate 17 and then downward to form with the -connecting-plate a resilient clamp adapted to engage the end member 13 and secure the connecting-plate in position. This plate is provided with a thumb-piece 19 for operating the same. To secure the roller to the frame, the lug 14, which is secured to the end member 12, is placed in the bushing in one end of the roller as the roller is placed in position in the frame. The detachable pivot-lug 16 is then passed through the aperture 15 in the end member 13 'into the bushing 10 in the adjacent end of the roller and the free end of the connecting-plate 17 moved downward IOO until the clam ing member 18 comes into engagement wit the end member 13, thereby locking the pivot 16 in position.
I prefer to form the handle proper, 20, separate from the yoke 11 and to provide means for detachably securing the same thereto. The handle portion is provided with a pivotlug 21, adapted to extend through an aperture 22, formed in the yoke 11. Mounted on this pivot-lug and extending substantially at right angles to the handle 2O is a connectingplate 23, which is provided on opposite sides of the pivot 21 with extensions or lips 24, which are first bent inward and then downward and upward, respectively, to form, with the connecting-plate 23, resilient clamping members for engaging the yoke 11. To secure the handle to the yoke, the connectingplate 23 is turned at' substantially right angles to the yoke 11 and the pivot 21 entered in the aperture 22 of said yoke and then turned to a position parallel with said yoke, thereby bringing the resilient clamping members 24 into engagement with the same and locking the handle in position thereon.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
