ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,588, datedJuly 22, 1890.
Application filed June 5, 1890. Serial No. 354,388. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE Looms WOOL- LEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore,in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to acombin ed ink and pencil eraser and burnisher, and aims to provide an article which will comprise the elements necessary for the purposes aforesaid in compact form, and which will at the same time be simple, cheap, eflicient, and satisfactory in its operation.
The improvement consists in the burnisher arranged in juxtaposition to the eraser, whereby the same may be brought into position for use after the eraser has been applied without necessitating the reversal of the article, whereby the eraser and rubber may be used alternately without loss of time in changing from one to the other.
The improvement further consists in the novel construction of the holder, whichad mits of either a broad or a sharp abradingsurface being brought into requisition, according to the nature of the work, the broad surface being used for heavy erasing and the sharp surface or edge for light and fine erasmg.
The improvement also consists in the novel construction of the clamping-band, whereby a purchase can be had at either end thereof when forcing the band on the holder to clamp the abradingstrip thereon.
The improvement also further consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in,the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a side view of an eraser embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the narrow end of the holder, showin g the abrading-strip and the clam ping-band detached and arranged in their relative positions. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line w as of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the end which is provided with the burnisher.
The holder A is wedge-shaped or tapers at its end a,which endis provided with an abrad ing-strip B, which is stretched over the edge, being held in place by the clamping-band D, which is slipped over the end of the holder and binds the said abradingstrip thereon. One corner of the holder, as a, is rounded to present a broad abrading-surface, whereas the opposite corner a is left angular to presenta sharp abrading-edge for fine and neat erasing, which could not otherwise be eifected.
The clamping-band D is provided at its opposite ends corresponding with the edges of the holder with curved arms (1, on which the fingers obtain a purchase when forcing the said band on or off the holder when clamping or releasing the abrading-strip B. This band is sufficiently wide to obtain a firm bearing on the holder-A and flares to correspond with the taper of the said holder. The end and edges of the holder on which the abradingstrip rests is re-enforced by a metal strip C, which is fitted into and conforms to the outline of the said holder, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, being held in place on the holder by any suitable means.
The pencil-eraser E is fitted to the end of the holder opposite the end a in any .approved manner, preferably by being inserted in a socket formed in the said end. The burnisher F, of any material suitable for the purpose,is secured to the said holder in close proximity to the pencil-eraser, being secured to the corner of the holder, whereby it will be out of the way and will not interfere with the free use of the said pencil-eraser, and which when in use will not be hampered by the said pencil-eraser or any part of the holder.
The abradingstrip B may be of any suitable material, being preferably a strip of emery-cloth. In practice, when the said abrad' ing-strip becomes worn in part,it can be easily replaced by a new strip or can have its position changed in respect to the holder by loosening the clamping-band and shifting the said strip on the holder and substituting a new one therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. The hereinbefore-specified eraser, comprising a holder which is tapering or wedgeshaped at one end and having one corner at said end rounded, and an abrading strip passed over said end, as shown, a clam pingband for securing the said band to the holder, a pencil-eraser provided at the upper end of the holder, and aburnisher arranged close to the said eraser, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pencil-eraser, the combination, with a holder provided with an eraser, as E, of a burnisher, as F, secured to the said holder in close relation to the said eraser E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In an eraser, the combination, with the wedge-shaped or tapering holderhaving an angular and a rounded corner and the abrading-strip, of the clamping-band flaring to correspond with the taper of the holder and having arms at its opposite ends, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
