PENCIL-SHARPENER.

SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 518,853, dated April 24, 1894. Application filed February 15, 1894. Serial No. 500,190. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANK MOINTYRE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York,

have invented a certain new and useful Im` provement in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a Specification.

My invention consists in a device which comprises in combination a holder and a pencil Sharpener detachably connected to, but heldfrom rotation in, the holder. The pencil Sharpener I contemplate using and for which my invention is more particularly designed is that which is the Subject of Letters Patent No. 502,632, of August 1, 1893. It has been my purpose to provide for that Sharpener a holder by which it can be more easily, steadily and continuously rotated, than is now possible, and also to so connect the two parts that the Sharpener when it becomes dull can readily be removed and replaced by a new one. The invention however, in its application .is not confined to that special pencil Sharpener.

In the accompanying drawings, to which I Shall now refer in order to better explain my invention,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in the form in which I now prefer to make it. Fig. 2 is a like view of the parts detached from one another. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of another form of holder,with the Sharpener represented by dotted-lines. Fig. 4 is a-.like View of Still another form of the device. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5+5, Fig. 4.

In Figs. 1 and 2,A iS the pencil Sharpener, which may be of any suitable form and construction, but which in the present instance is the Sharpener subject of Letters Patent No.V

The holder consists of a sheet of metal Strip B bent into frame-like form with itstwo rear ends fashioned as jaws b shaped to fit around the tubular neck of the Sharpener, the body of which latter is received arid contained within the frame. A ring or sleeve C, its over the jaws o and clamps them upon the Sharpener. The form and arrangement of the parts are Such that the Sharpener while detachably connected to the holder, is so held therein as to be incapable of independent rotation. Upon the front of the holder is a crank handle D by which the device can be rotated upon the pencil to be sharpened.

Y In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the holder consists of a wire bent to form la cylindrical loop o for encircling the neck of the Sharpener. One of the ends of this loop eX- tends forward diagonally away from the Sharpener and terminates in a handle d. The other end e extends forward parallel with and just beneath the knife bed g of the Sharpener,

forming a rest or stop on which said bed bears the tip of the Sharpener, whenever itis desired' to remove the latter. i l

In the modification Shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the holder consists of a plain ring h which fits on the neck of the Sharpener and is provided with a handle mounted on a rod or stem 11 attached to the ring and extending to the front of the Sharpener. The Sharpener is prevented from rotating independently of its holder, by a rib or projection j on the Sharpener which enters a groove la inthe ring; or any other suitable means for this purpose may be ernployed which will not interfere with thev detachable connection between the two parts. In all thesey constructions the Sharpener is detachably connected to and mounted So as to be'practically incapable of independent rotation in a holder which at the front is provided ywith a crank handle for manipulating it. I remark here, however, that the rotatable holder if desired, can be mounted in a standand turned by a crank or the like, as in the numerous pencil sharpening machines now on the market.

What I claim herein as new and of my own invention is- 1.
