GEORGE S. WILLIAMS, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED PENCIL CASE, SHARPENER, AND ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,250, dated August 2,1881.
' Application filed June 11, 1881. (No model.) d
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cos Cob, town of Greenwich, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Pencil Case, Sharpener, and Eraser, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination of a pencil-case, a pencil-sharpener projecting from such case atits upper end, and a detachable eraser-case, havingits lower end fitted to the upper portion of the pencil-case, and having an eraser inserted into its upper end, thus entirely inelosing and protecting the sharpener, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents alongitudinal central section. Fig. 2 shows the pencil case and sharpener without the eraser-case. Fig. 3 shows the eraser-case detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the pencil-case; B, the sharpener, C, the eraser-case; and D, the (IHSPIH The pencil-case A is slitted in the usual manner upward from its lower end, where it is open to receive an ordinary lead-pencil, and the sharpener B projects from the upper end thereof, being fixed thereto in any suitable manner. This sharpener B consists of the usual tapering socket, having an elongated cutting-edge and chip-discharging mouth, and the upper or greatest diameter of the sharpener is approximately equal to the diameter of the pencil-case. The eraser-case C is fitted snugly at its lower end to the upper portion of the pencil-case A, and the eraser D, consisting of a tip ofindia-rubber, is inserted into its upper end.
When it is desired to use the pencil-sharpener B, the eraser-case C is simply detached or removed from the pencil-case, thus exposing the sharpener, while, when the latter is not in use, the eraser-case is placed on the pencil-case, and in this manner the sharpener is entirelyinclosed and protected-namely, at the side by the eraser-case, and at the top by the eraser. v
The cutting-edge of the pencil-sharpener B is made oblique instead of longitudinal, relatively to the upper and lower edges thereof, for the purpose of adapting the sharpener to produce a draw-cut, and I reserve the right to make this feature the subject-matter of a separate application for a patent.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to combine a pencil case, sharpener, and eraser, and I do not claim such; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the pencil-case, the pencilsharpener projecting from such case at its upper end, the detachable eraser-case, having its lower end fitted to the upper portion of the pencil-case and having the eraser inserted in its upper end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE S. WILLIAMS.
