NITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED RULERS AND PENClL-SHARFENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,230, dated February 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. FLANIGAN, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Ruler and Pencil-Sharpener, of which the foilowing is a specification My invention relates to a groove in an edge or side of the ruler coated with sand, emery, or other equivalent material, for sharpening the pencils.
The drawing represents an isometrica-l view of the improved ruler with the swivel-plate turned in its open position.
Ais the ruler, having, as represented in the drawing, a V-shaped groove, to, in one'edge, which is coated with sand, emery, or other equivalent material, for sharpening the penoils.
The pencil is sharpened by drawingit backward and forward with one end in the groove and turningit round so as to bring it to a regular point.
Instead of placing the groove in the edge.
