OSCAR B. WELKER, OF NEW YORK, N.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
$PECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,857, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed February 20, 1903. Serial No 144iZ06- N m deL To aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR B.WELKER,a citizen of the United States, residing at NewYork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners,of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved pencil-sharpener which is also designed for use as a paper-weight and which will receive and hold the chips or cuttings produced by sharpening a pencil; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the acc0mpanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are des ignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pencil-sharpener; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified which comprises a box a, composed of a body portion a a bottom a and a top portion a and in the construction shown the top and bottom portions are made removable or detachable; but this form of construction is not absolutely necessary, and either the top or bottom may be made removable or detachable, or said box may be made in any desired manner, all that is necessary in this connection being to provide means whereby access may be had to the interior of said box.
The top a is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening a which is large enough in cross-section to receive a pencil, and one end of this slot or opening is beveled or inclined, as shown at a, this bevel or inclination being preferably the same that it is desired to give the point of a pencil in sharpening the same.
Beneath the said beveled or inclined end portion of the said slot or opening is passed a transverse blade I), which may be held in position in any desired manner, but which, as shown in the drawings, is countersunk in the top of the body portion a of the box, and this blade I) is provided with a cutting edge b and all that is necessary in order to sharpen the pencil is to insert the end thereof through the opening a and draw it outwardly across the edge 19 of the blade I), said pencil in this operation being held at an inclination corresponding with that of the beveled surface a. By turning the pencil and repeating this operation a number of times the desired point will be given the pencil, and the chips or other cuttings will fall into the box a and may be removed whenever desired.
The entire box a is preferably made of metal, and either iron, brass, copper, or nickel may be employed, and the box may be made ornamental and thus adapted for use as an ornamental paper-weight or desk ornament, and my invention is not limited to the shape of the box nor to any particular construction thereof. 1
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pencil-sharpener comprising a box in the top of which is a longitudinal slot or opening adapted to receive the end of a pencil, said slot or opening being provided at one end with an inclined bottom wall, and a transverse cutting-blade supported beneath said slot or opening at said end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of February, 1903.
OSCAR B. W ELKER.
