Description

No Model.)
, Ammnerzzj Hand-Rul'ing Pen. V I No. 231,703. Patented Aug. 31,1880.
' To all whom it may concern UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED DREDGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAND RULING-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,703, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed August 3, 1880. (N 0 model.)
Be it known that I, ALFRED DREDGE, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Hand Ruling-Pen; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in the holders of pens for hand-rulin g.
It consists in combining, with a gang of pens, a holder which, while it offers perfect protection to the pens in use, serves also as a convenient hand device for manipulating the pens while drawing a series of parallel lines, such as used for bars on blank sheets of music, parallel lines on account-books, &c.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a gang of pens and its inclosed holder, with a portion of the ink-cloth shown broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical side view thereof, with a portion of the holder broken away to better show the construction of parts;
and Fig. 8 is a sectional viewtaken in the line 00 m of Fig. 2, looking toward the rear of the device.
A is the gang of pens. B B are the plates, between which are inserted. the upper ends of the pens composing the gang; 0 O, the sides of the holder. These sides run forward of the holding-plates down to a point, and tapering at about the same angle as the gang of pens, and so as to completely inclose and protect such gang. These sides areconnected near the base at their rear end by a rod, D.
E is a piece of cloth on top of the pens, in which the ink runs and whereby it is equally distributed over the pen points. F F are openings which serve for the better grasping by the fingers of the pen-holder in manipulating the pens over the paper.
The device is operated by drawing it over the paper with the hand, either alone oragainst the edge of a ruler or other straight-edge instrument. It may be operated either in a backward or forward direction. Thus lines either across or diagonally of pages of account-books can be made with either one, two, or more pens in a gang.
By loosening the screw G the under plate, B, maybe released, and another gang of pens inserted ot'a greater or less number of pens than that shown in the drawings. The nunr ber therein shown is especially intended to rule paper with lines for blank sheet-music.
I claim The combination ota gang of pens with a holder extending forward with and protect ing such gang, substantially as described.
ALFRED DREDGE.
