DEVICE FOR WRITING IN DUPLICATE.

SPEQIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,339, dated October 11, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. HEARING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nelsonville, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for WVriting in Duplicate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for writing in duplicate; and it consists of the several parts constructed and arranged as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference designate the same parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invent-ion as seen from the front and left-hand side of the operator. Fig. 2 is a plan of the traveling frame with the upper side reversed, showing the rollers. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, the section being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the frame for holding the pens, and Fig. 5 is a similar.

A designates a flat piece of thin wood or other suitable material, to which are secured the end pieces a, thus forming a frame A, which is adapted to rest upon the desk, preferably upon the upper end of the sheet or sheets of paper to be writtenupon, where it may be held by the hand or any suitable means. A rod a extends from end to end of the said frame parallel with and a short distance above the flat piece A.

The traveling frame B is mounted upon the rod a, which latter passes between the three grooved rollers b, j ournaled in the upper part of the said frame.

In the lower part of the frame B are journaled three grooved rollers 12, similar to the rollers 12 and arranged to receive a rod 0, which passes through the frame B at right angles to the rod (1. By this construction the traveling frame B is free to roll along the rod a, and the rod 0 is free to roll easily through the said frame at right angles to the said rod a.

D designates a frame composed of the basepiece D, the two upright end pieces (1, and the rocking piece D pivoted between the two end pieces. The rocking piece D is provided with a number of perforations d near its ends to receive the pen-holders E,carrying the pens c, and is also perforated at its middle to receive the handle F.

The base-piece D of the frame D is perforated, as at d, to receive the end of the rod 0, and when the several parts are assembled the device appears as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be obvious that the pen-holders may be inserted in either of the perforations d to vary the distance of the pens from each other and also that pencils might be inserted in the said perforations in place of the pens.

In Fig. 5 is shown a bar H, perforated at its center, as at 72-, to receive the end of the rod 0, and also perforated at its ends to receive pencils h, which bar may be placed on the end of the rod 0 instead of the frame D when it is desirable to write with a pencil.

The operation of the device is as follows: The frame A is placed upon the desk at the top of the sheet or sheets of paper to be written upon. The frame D, which is provided with a pair of pens or pencils, as may be desirable, is secured to the end of the rod C, and the latter is passed through the frame B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The handle F is held in the hand and the writing performed as with an ordinary pen or pencil, the frame B being free to move from left to right along the rod a, the rod 0 being free to move toward or away from the operator. The frame D, however, being always parallel with the frame A, the letters will be formed by both pens or pencils simultaneously, thus duplicating the writing, 'as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a device of the character described the combination with a frame adapted to rest upon a desk and a traveling frame arranged to move along the first frame, of a rod adapted to move through the traveling frame, a frame secured to the said rod and carrying Writingpoints, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character describe the combination with a frame adapted to rest upon a desk, a rod mounted upon the said frame, and a traveling frame mounted upon the said rod, of a rod adapted to move through the traveling frame, and a frame secured to the said rod and carrying writing-points, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the character described the combination With a frame. adapted to rest upon a desk, a rod mounted upon the said frame, and a traveling frame mounted to slide on the said rod, of a rod adapted to slide through the said traveling frame, a frame secured to the said rod and having a series of perforations to receive writing-points, and a handle secu red to the said frame substantially as described.

4:." In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame and a rod mounted on the said frame, of a traveling frame, a set of rollers journaled in the said traveling frame to roll upon the said rod, a second set of rollers journaled in the said traveling frame, a rod 0 passing between the second set of rollers, and a frame having writing-points carried by the said rod 0, substantially as described.
