Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October '7, 1909. Serial No. 521,495.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STEINMEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bonaparte, in the county of Van Buren and State ofIowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My invention is an improvement in copy holders, and consists in certain novel constructions, and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character specified, adapted for use with or without a typewriter and provided with detachable means for connecting it with the typewriter.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the support detached, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the improvement.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings comprises a base 1, having at each end a bracket 2, and each bracket is provided with two bearings 3 and 4, one directly above the other as shown more partic ularly in Fig. 3. In the upper bearings 4, is journalcd the shaft 5 of a roller 6, and the ends of the shaft are provided with knobs 7 having corrugated peripheral surfaces, for convenience in manipulating the shaft. A guard rod 8 is arranged parallel with the roller 6, and the ends of the rod are bent at right angles to the body portion as at 9, thence forwardly as at 10, upwardly as at 11, and outwardly to form trimnions 12, each of which is received in one of the bearings 3. I The paper support shown in Fig. 2 is arranged below the roller,the said support comprising an inclined portion 13 provided with slots 14, spaced apart end from end, a substantially vertical portion 15, and a substantially horizontal portion 16, whose free forward edge rests against the under face of the inclined portion as at 17. The free edge of the inclined portion is beaded as at 18, and a rod 19 is arranged in the bead, the ends of the rods being received in bearing brackets 20 secured to the base at each end of the support. A shaft 21 is provided with rubber rollers 22, which extend through the slots 14, and the shaft is arranged between the portions 13, 15 and 16 of the support, and is journaled in bearings 23 on the portion 13. Plate springs 24 are secured by one end to the base as at 25, and the free ends engage the under face of the portion 16 of the support to retain the rollers 22 in contact with the roller 6. r
In operation the copy is inserted between the rollers 6 and 23, and rests upon the portion 13 of the support, the upper portion of which is shaped to fit the roller as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the copy is supported by the rod 8, and the copy may be moved by rotating the roller 6 by means of the knobs 7.
The rollers 22 are preferably of rubber, and the action of the springs 24 holds them in contact with the roller 6. The base is supported by wire bracket arms, each of which consists of a vertical portion 26, having at its upper end a semi-circular portion 27 whose free end detachably engages an opening 28 in the base, and at its lower end a pair of spaced arms 29, which are adapted to engage a typewriter.
he improvement is adapted for use alone or with a typewriter, and in the former case the brackets are removed by withdrawing the ends from the openings in the edge of the base. When used with the typewriter the brackets are engaged with the machine, the holder being supported thereabove. The base is provided with rubber covered feet 30, upon which it rests when used alone.
I claim:
1. A copy holder comprising a base, a bracket at each end provided with upper and lower bearings, a shaft journaled in the upper bearings, knobs on the outer ends of the shaft outside the brackets, a roller on the shaft inside the brackets, a support comprising a sheet bent to form an inclined portion curved at its upper end to fit the roller, a substantially horizontal portion whose free edge engages the under face of the inclined portion, and a substantially vertical portion connecting the rear edges of the said portions, the front edge of the inclined portion being beaded, said portion having transversely alined slots adjacent to the roller, a reinforcing rod in the bead, bearings on the base in which the ends of the rod are received, a rod journaled between the inclined and horizontal portions and provided with rollers extending through the slots, springs normally pressing the support toward the roller, and a rod having a portion parallel with the roller and offset ends received in the lower bearings.
2. A copy holder comprising a base, a bracket at each end of the base, each of said brackets having an upper and a lower bearing, a roller journaled in the upper bearings and provided at its ends with knobs for turning the roller, a hollow support substantially triangular in cross section below the roller, and having its upper face shaped to fit the periphery thereof, a shaft journaled between the upper and lower faces of the support, rollers on the shaft, the upper face having slots through which the rollers extend, a reinforcing rod in the lower edge of the support, bearings on the base in which the ends of the rod are received, a guard substantially parallel with the roller and having offset ends received in the lower bearings and detachable means for detachably connecting the holder with a type- Writer.
3. A copy holder comprising a base, a bracket at each end of the base, each of said brackets having an upper and a lower bearing, a roller j ournaled in the upper bearings and provided at its ends with knobs for turning the roller, a hollow support substantially triangular in cross section below the roller and having its upperwface shaped to fit the periphery thereof, a shaft journaled between the upper and lower faces of the support, rollers on the shaft, the upper face having slots through which the rollers extend, means for connecting the support to the base, and means for detachably connecting the holder with a typewriter, said means being detachably connected with the base.
