Description

A. F. PAYNE. WALLPAPER EXHIBITOR.
Patented Nov. l
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
AUGUSTUS F; PAYNE, OF HAMILTON, NEW YORK.
WALL-PAPER EXHIBITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,648, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed May 16, 1892. Serial No- 433,077- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS F. PAYNE, of Hamilton, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper Exhibitors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art.
to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an improved wall-paper exhibitor.
The object of my invention. is to provide an exhibitor that is simple in construction and compact in folded position and has effective means for holding the paper and allowing the adjustment of the parts.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar letters and numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows the exhibitor in perspective from the rearward side. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of the device. Fig. 3 shows in enlarged detail a portion of the head or top of the device. Fig. 4: shows inplan view the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows in enlarged detail an adjustable securing device for securing the brace between the main and supporting frame. Fig. 6 shows a portion of thepaper-clamp in connection with a section of a head in which the sameis removably secured. Fig. 7 shows the inside face view of the head.
Referring more specifically to the reference letters and numerals marked on the drawings in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the main frame composed of suitable Vertical and horizontal bars to provide a face upon which the paper is exhibited. At the upper end of the frame 1, on either side, are rigidly secured circular heads 2 2, which are provided with slots 2 in their inner faces to receive the paper-holding clamp 3, which is composed of two semicylindrical pieces secured together by clamping-screws 4:4, and is provided on each end witha tongue 3, adapted to enter the slots 2. To the rear side of the main frame 1 is hinged at a asupporting-frame 5. In the rear portion of heads 2 is pivoted at 6 6 an exhibitor leaf or shelf 7, composed of suitable side and cross bars to adapt it for the purpose. On the under side of the leaf 7 is provided two or more hooks or catches 7, adapted to engage the swing ing end of brace 8, pivoted at 9 9, and hold the leaf in extended position and adjusted to 116 position shown in full or dotted lines in The supporting-frame 5 has a V-shaped brace 10, pivoted at its forked ends at 11 thereto. The brace 10 incloses between its arms, and the point of the brace engages and runs on rack 12, consisting of a wire bent in a zigzag or wavy manner, as shown, and secured at its end to cross-bars of the frame. The paper is indicated by b.
In use the exhibitor is extended in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2,'in which case the leaf 5 is supported by brace 8, and the supporting-frame is held to the main frame (in ex tended position) by brace 10. In adjusting the supporting-frame toward the main frame the swinging end of the brace 10 runs down the rack 12 by its own gravity. In opening the device from its folded position the upper end of the device is given a dexterous swing toward the front, which swings the brace 10 out, and the supporting-frame is then quickly separated from the main frame, which brings the brace into engagement with the upper end of the rack, after which it can be allowed to run down the rack in bringing the device into the desired position. The paper is secured in the clamp 3, and in exhibiting is turned from the front over onto the leaf 7 or in the reverse manner. With the leaf 7 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the paper put in the clamp in pairs of sheets with faces together combinations of paper can be shown, one being exhibited on the front and one on the leaf. In turning the paper from the front onto the leaf it is held and guided by the circular heads 2 2. Two
or more clamps, as 3, can be used in the same exhibitor, if desired. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a wall-paper ex:
hibitor, of the main frame, a supporting-frame hinged at its upper end to the main frame, a rack 12, secured on the main frame, and a swinging brace hinged to the supporting- 5 frame and surrounding and running on the rack 12, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a paper-exhibitor, of the main frame having circular heads 2 2, having vertical slots, a removable clamp 3, 10 having tongues 01' tenons on the end adapted to be received in the slots, a hinged leaf 7, the supporting-frame hinged to the main frame, a rack 12, secured on the main frame, and a V-shaped brace hinged at; its forked end on the supporting-frame and having its pointed end running on the rack 12, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS F. PAYNE.
