LAWRENCE NOLAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed Nov. 19, 1907.
Application filed April 27, 1907. Serial No. 370.643.
T c all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE NoLAN,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State oi New York, have invented a new and improved Bracket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to brackets, my more particular object being to produce a type of bracket suitable for use in connection with supporting horses of the kind shown in my patent No. 835,977, dated Nov. 13, 1906.
My more particular object is to produce a bracket suitable for supporting a striaght edge at a convenient distance below the platform resting upon horses of the kind above mentioned in order to facilitate the trimming o selvages or marginal edges from paper, cloth or other similar material resting upon the platform.
My invention further relates to a special construction of bracket enabling it to be used for general supporting purposes.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a pair of horses of the kind described in my patent above mentioned, these horses supporting a platform upon which paper or cloth may be sustained, each being provided with brackets of my improved type for supporting a straight edge below and parallel with the platform; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary end elevation showing one of the inclined legs upon which is mounted one of my improved brackets; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section upon the line 3*?) of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow and showing the details of construction of the bracket and the means whereby it is mounted upon the leg; and Fig. 4 is a reduced elevation showing how the bracket is mounted upon a vertical post or standard for general use as a suport.
Horses 5 are each provided with crossed legs 6 and with a connecting bar 7 secured thereto by means of bolts 8. Resting upon the two connecting bars is a board 8 constituting a plat orm upon which work may be laid. Abracket 9 is provided with a horn 10 turned up slightly at 11 so as to form a hook. The bracket is further provided a bridge 12 integral therewith and working in this bridge is a thumb-screw13. A detachable horn 14 is provided at 15 with an upturned portion constituting a hook and is further provided wi h a tongue 16 which may be inserted beneath the bridge 12. The horn 14 is further provided with a shoulder 17 which engages the bridge 12 and acts as a limiting stop. The bracket 9 is further provided with an aperture 18 immediately adjacent to the tongue 16 when the latter is in position.
The tongue 16 being inserted below the bridge 12 and the screw 13 being tightened, the pressure of the screw upon the tongue 16 causes it to hold the horn 14 firmly in position. Owing to the existence of the aperture 18, the tongue 16 may spring slightly thereinto thus affording more or less resilience and causing the screw 13 to make a more springy engagement with the tongue.
T humb-screws 19 enter the bracket 9 from opposite sides and are adapted to bear upon the leg 6. By loosening either one of the screws 19, the general position of the bracket may be changed relatively to the leg 6, the screw 13 being for the purpose of controlling the engagement and disengagement of the horn 14.
WVhere the bracket is used as indicated in Fig. 4, a vertical standard or post 20 is provided and the bracket mounted upon it substantially in the manner above described with reference to the mounting of the bracket upon the inclined leg 6.
My invention is used as follows: The bracket is placed upon the legs 6 or upon the post or standard 20. as the case maybe. By manipulating the thumb screws 19 the bracket is centered or otherwise adjusted in relation to its support. In doing this the horn 14 may or may not be in position, as desired, the .mounting of this horn being ontirely independent of the mounting of the bracket.
Where the bracket is used as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, a straight edge 21 is rested upon the horn 14 at opposite ends of the platform. If, new, a roll of wall paper or of cloth or other material be rested upon the platform 8 and allowed to hang over the ends of this platform, the straight edge may be raised into position and the material turned accordingly.
The device above described is of special with service to the paper hanger. The horns 16,
14, as shown in Fig. 4, may serve as supporting arms and upon them may be rested rolls of paper in good condition to be readily removed or to be observed while thus stored.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A bracket, comprising a body portion provided with a horn and with an aperture,
another horn provided with a tongue for entering said aperture, and a thumb-screw for engaging said tongue and holding said second-mentioned horn rigid in relation to said body portion.
2. A bracket, comprising a body portion provided with a horn integral therewith, means for securing said body portion upon a supporting member, a horn provided with a tongue for engaging said body portion, and means for connecting said tongue and said body portion together.
3. The combination of a supporting. member adapted to rest obliquely while in position, a body portion provided with means whereby it may be connected With said member, said body portion being further provided With means for engaging a tongue, and a horn provided with a tongue to be engaged by said last-mentioned means, said tongue and said last-mentioned horn being inclined relatively to each other at such an angle that when said tongue is in position relatively to said body portion, said horn becomes horizontal.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
