(Cl. 120-32) This invention relates to a novel and useful copy holder designed primarily for holding copy material in an elevated position above a typewriter. The copy holder of the instant invention is constructed primarily of length of wire bent into different configurations and therefore may be readily produced at a low cost.
While many copy holders designed to hold copy material in an elevated position adjacent a typewriter have heretofore been designed, most of these copy holders have included means by which the copy material may be shifted vertically relative to a horizontal reference line in order that a secretary may more readily keep her place on the copy material. However, these previous copy holders have been provided with manually actuatable means for shifting the copy material each time a line thereof has been copied in order that the next line may be brought into registry with the horizontal reference line of the copy holder. In addition, most previous copy holders have been constructed in a manner so as to be positioned stationarily relative to the typewriter and this of course results in the material being typed in the typewriter shifting back and forth .through a horizontal'plane relative to the copy material with one execption, that being some of the very old typewriters and one current manufacture of typewriter which utilizes a typewriter carriage that is stationarily supported from the frame of the typewriter.
The main object of this invention-is to provide a copy holder constructed in a manner whereby the copy material may be supported thereby and the copy holder may in turn be supported by the movable carriage of the type writer thereby enabling the line being typed and the line being copied to be positioned stationarily relative to each other. In this manner, the typist may more readily keep her place in the'copymaterial.
A further object of this invention, in accordance with the immediately preceding object, is to provide a copy holder having means for shifting the copy material supported thereby in vertical elevation relative to a horizontal reference line automaticallyeach time a line of type of the material being typed is completed and the carriage of the typewriter is returned to the left hand margin.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a copy holder constructed in a manner whereby it may be readily modified so as to be adapted for support from substantially all shiftable typewriter carriages.
A final object of this invention to be specifically enumerated herein is to provide a copy holder in accordance with the preceding objects which will conform to conventional forms of manufacture, be of simple construction and easy to use so as to provide a device that will be economically feasible, long lasting and relatively trouble free in operation.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.

Referring'now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 1% generally designates the conventional form of typewriter which includes aihorizontally shiftable carriage referred to in general .by the reference numeral 12. The carriage 12 includes a platen generally referred to by the reference numeral 14 and it may be seen that the .26 which are interconnected by means of alongitudinally extending shaft 28. In addition, adrive roller generally referred to by the reference numeral 30 and a pressure roller generally referred to .by the reference numeral '32 are supported for rotation at their opposite ends by means ofthe leg assemblies 24 and 26.
An upstanding grill-like 'panelportion or paper table generally referred to by the reference numeral 34 also interconnectsthe leg assemblies 24 and 26.
Corresponding opposite ends of the drive and pressure rollers 30 and 32 are supported from the upper .ends of a generally'vshaped support referred toby the reference numeral 36. Each of the V-shaped supports 36 includes a pair of legs 38 and 40 interconnected at the apex of the support by means of .one and a'half turns of an integral portion of legs 38 and -40. The upper ends of the legs 38 and 40 each include a right angle or stub axle portion 42 and the drive and pressure rollers 30 and 32 comprise tubular members 44 having pairs of bearing sleeves 46 secured. in'the opposite ends thereof. The right angled portions 42 are rotatably received in the corresponding sleeve members 46.
With attention now directed more specifically to FIG- URE 6 of the drawings it may be seen that one end of the tubular member 44 of the drive roller 32 is detached from the remainder of that tubular member as at 48 so as to define a groove 50 between the detached portion 48 and the remainder of the corresponding tubular member 44.
The shaft 28 is provided with a pair of diametrically reduced and externally threaded end portions 52 which are secured through corresponding apices of the V-shaped supports 36 by means of nuts 54.
A paper pan assembly generally referred to by the reference numeral 56 is provided and comprises a single piece of wire with a series of alternately reversing bends formed therein. The paper pan 56 is secured between the V-shaped supports 36. The paper pan assembly 56 is arcuate in transverse section and opens upwardly toward the drive and pressure rollers 30 and 32 beneath which it extends.
The grill-like panel portion 34 comprises a generally inverted U-shaped member 60 including depending legs 62 which are bowed as at 64 so as to provide clearance for the drive roller 30 while maintaining the medial plane of the grill-like panel portion 34 in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the drive roller 30. The legs 62 of the panel portion 34 are interconnected by means of a bight portion 66 and a pair of transverse braces 68. In addition, a generally U-shaped bail 70 including a pair of legs 72 interconnected at corresponding ends by means of the bight portion 74 is secured to the panel portion 34 in any convenient manner such as by welding at the free end of the legs 72 with the paper bail 75 opening rearwardly and toward the medial plane of the panel portion 34.
The leg assemblies 24 and 26 include pairs of depending legs 74 and 76 and 78 and 86. Each of the legs 74, 76, 78 and 80 define a downwardly opening recess 82 which is adapted to snugly receive the corresponding transverse member 20. Accordingly, it will be seen that the lower ends of the legs of each leg assembly are designed to grip and be supported by the corresponding transverse member 20 at points spaced longitudinally therealong.
With attention now directed to FIGURE 2 of the drawings, it may be seen that an endless flexible member 86 is entrained over the grooved knob 16 and the drive roller 30 with the flexible member 86 being received in the groove 50;
In operation, the copy material 83 maybe supported from the holder 22 with the upper portion of the copy material resting against the panel portion 34, the intermediate portion of the copy material passing between the,
drive and pressure rollers 30 and 32, and the lower end of the copy material resting upon the rear portion of the paper pan assembly 56.
Inasmuch as the copy holder 22 is supported from the carriage 12, the copy hold-er and the copy material 88 supported thereby will of course be stationarily supported relative to the carriage 12 as the carriage 12 shifts back and forth across the top of the typewriter 10. Each time the carriage 12 of the typewriter is returned to the left hand margin, the platen 14 automatically ad-' vances the material being typed one line which in turn,
by means of the endless flexible member 86, will also effect rotation of the drive roller 30 and the advancement of the copy material 88 on line.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly allsuitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A copy holder for holding copy material in an elevated position above a ty ewriter, said copy holder 4 7 including a pair of opposite side generally V-shaped roller support members constructed of small diameter rod-like material, each of said support members including a pair of upwardly divergent legs terminating at their upper ends in generally parallel stub axle portions and secured together at their lower ends at the apex of the corresponding support member, said support members being disposed in generally parallel upright planes, the stub axle portions of each set of corresponding stub axle portions of said support members being axially aligned and directed toward each other, parallel first and second drive and pressure rollers journaled from the sets of said axially aligned stub axle portions and disposed in rolling contacting engagement with'each other, an upstanding paper table defining an inverted U-shaped member including a pair of depending legs interconnected at their upper ends by means of a bight portion, said paper table extending between said support member and projecting above said rollers and having the lower end portions of its legs secured to corresponding legs of said support members, an elongated brace secured between the apices of said support members, each of said support member legs including a depending support leg secured at its upper end to the corresponding support member leg intermediate the corresponding apex and stub axle portion, the lower end of each support leg including means adapted to engage and to be supported from the carriage of a typewriter, said drive roller including means adapted to be drivingly connected to the platen of an associated typewriter, an elongated paper pan assembly generally arcuate in crosssection disposed beneath, generally paralleling and opening upwardly toward said rollers, the opposite ends of said elongated paper pan assembly being supportingly secured from corresponding legs of said support members, said paper table and said support legs each also being constructed of small diameter rod-like material.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said paper pan assembly is constructed of a length of rod-like material extending between said support members and having a series of alternatelyreversing bends formed therein.

Claims (1)

1. A COPY HOLDER FOR HOLDING COPY MATERIAL IN AN ELEVATED POSITION ABOVE A TYPEWRITER, SAID COPY HOLDER INCLUDING A PAIR OF OPPOSITE SIDE GENERALLY V-SHAPED ROLLER SUPPORT MEMBERS CONSTRUCTED OF SMALL DIAMETER ROD-LIKE MATERIAL, EACH OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS INCLUDING A PAIR OF UPWARDLY DIVERGENT LEGS TERMINATING AT THEIR UPPER ENDS IN GENERALLY PARALLEL STUB AXLE PORTIONS AND SECURED TOGETHER AT THEIR LOWER ENDS AT THE APEX OF THE CORRESPONDING SUPORT MEMBER, SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS BEING DISPOSED IN GENERALLY PARALLEL UPRIGHT PLANES, THE STUB AXLE PORTIONS OF EACH SET OF CORRESPONDING STUB AXLE PORTIONS OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS BEING AXIALLY ALIGNED AND DIRECTED TOWARD EACH OTHER, PARALLEL FIRST AND SECOND DRIVE AND PRESSURE ROLLERS JOURNALED FROM THE SETS OF SAID AXIALLY ALIGNED STUB AXLE PORTIONS AND DISPOSED IN ROLLING CONTACTING ENGAGEMENT WITH EACH OTHER, AND UPSTANDING PAPER TABLE DEFINING AN INVERTED U-SHAPED MEMBER INCLUDING A PAIR OF DEPENDING LEGS INTERCONNECTED AT THEIR UPPER ENDS BY MEANS OF BIGHT PORTION, SAID PAPER TABLE EXTENDING BETWEEN SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS AND PROJECTING ABOVE SAID ROLLERS AND HAVING THE LOWER END PORTIONS OF ITS LEGS SECURED TO CORRESPONDING LEGS OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS AN ELONGATED BRACE SECURED BETWEEN THE APICES OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS, EACH OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBER LEGS INCLUDING A DEPENDING SUPPORT LEG SECURED AT ITS UPPER END TO THE CORRESPONDING SUPPORT MEMBER LEG INTERMEDIATE THE CORRESPONDING APEX AND STUB AXLE PORTION, THE LOWER END OF EACH SUPPORT LEG INCLUDING MEANS ADAPTED TO ENGAGE AND TO BE SUPPORTED FROM THE CARRIAGE OF A TYPEWRITER, SAID DRIVE ROLLER INCLUDING MEANS ADAPTED TO BE DRIVINGLY CONNECTED TO THE PLATEN OF AN ASSOCIATED TYPEWRITER, AN ELONGATED PAPER LPAN ASSEMBLY GENERALLY ARCUATE IN CROSSSECTION DISPOSED BENEATH, GENERALLY PARALLELING AND OPENING UPWARDLY TOWARD SAID ROLLERS, THE OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID ELONGATED PAPER PAN ASSEMBLY BEING SUPPORTINGLY SECURED FROM CORRESPONDING LEGS OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBERS, SAID PAPER TABLE AND SAID SUPPORT LEGS EACH ALSO BEING CONSTRUCTED OF SMALL DIAMETER ROD-LIKE MATERIAL
