1 Claim.
' The present invention relates generally to a printing device, but more particularly to a simple and improved construction of a menu printer in which a carriage is adapted to move transversely on a frame and carries a roll therein relatively movable with respect to the carriage for urging the paper to be printed against a printing ribbon extending over the type in a case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a noveland improvedconstruction of printing device which is provided with a removable chase so that another chase may be substituted in place of the one removed. g
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved printing device having a movable carriage adapted to be reciprocally mounted thereon in combination with an oscillatable lever for actuating the roller carried therein to and from the surface of the type.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel, compact and relatively light printing device in combination with a reciprocable carriage adapted to move across the frame of the printing device and having means associated therewith for intermittently moving a ribbon over theface of the type .upon each reciprocation of the movable carriage.
These and other objects 'are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts inthe manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the aplpended claim.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the removable type chase.
In illustrating the preferred form of my invention, I have shown the same as comprising two longitudinally extending main side frame members H! which are preferably of a substantially 2 cross sectional view and are held in relatively spaced apart relation by the end spacer rods ll. The main frame of the printing device is supported on four legs as shown at I 2. Extending transversely of the main frame at a point adjacent one end thereof is an intermediate frame bar l3 against which the forward end of the removable type chase generally indicated by 1 the reference character l4 abuts when inserted.
The removable type chase in this instance comprises a rectangular frame I5 having a metal bot- 5 tom [6. Secured to the upper surface of the longitudinal side frame members of the type chase l4 are flat metal strips as shown at I! which have their rearward ends projecting beyond the type chase and inclined downwardly as shown at. l8 so as to permit the rubber roller hereinafter'described to be raised and rolled freely over the type in the type chase in the manner hereinafter described. The type chase M is adapted to be seated on the flanges I 9 between the 2 main frame members Ill as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Mounted in the type chase 14 are the lines of type or slugs 20 which are clamped therein by conventional clamping mechanism indicated by the reference character '20 2|. Positioned on the opposite sides of the lines oftype 20 are spacer blocks 22 for maintaining the type centrally of the type chase. Journaled 'on one end of the frame preferably between the forward sets of legs I2 is a roller 23 which is '25 the roller 23 is a printing ribbon 25 which is of a width substantially the width of and extends over :30 the printing chase H1. The other end of the ribbon is adapted to be Wound about a second roller 26 which in turn is secured to a shaft 21 journaled at the other end of the frame between the rear set of legs l2. Secured to the shaft 21 '3 on the outside of the main frame is a ratchet wheel 28 which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl in the manner hereinafter describedfor intermittently moving the printing ribbon on each reciprocation of the carriage.
One of the important features of the present invention includes a novel means for controlling and adjusting the rubber roller carried by the movable carriage and its operationin simultaneously and intermittently moving the printing 45 ribbon. This means includes spaced apart carriage frame members 30 which are held in relatively spaced apart relation by spacer rods 3|.
Journaled in the opposite ends of each of the members 30 are flange rollers 32. which are 50' ear 33 which is slotted or slit as shown at 34. Located in the lower portion of each of the ears and between the slots 34 is a roller shaft 35 on which is journaled a roller 36 which is adapted to engage the lower edge of the top flange of the side frame members 10 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The bolt 35 in each instance may be clamped in position by a screw 31 for clamping the bifurcated portion of the ear member 33. Pivoted to one of the ears 33 is a pawl 38 which is adapted to be moved in the path of a ratchet wheel 28 so that the pawl may swing freely in one direction but is adapted to strike against the head of the bolt 35 to limit its swing in the other direction.
thereby causing the ratchet wheel to revolve in one direction or the direction indicated by the arrow on each return stroke of the carriage proper. Formed integrally with and projecting inwardly therefrom on each of the carriage frame members 30 are vertically extending and spaced apart guides 38. Slidably mounted between each of the guides 39 is a bearing portion 40 or a hanger 4!. Journaled in the bearing portion 40 by reduced extension 42 is a shaft 43. Secured to the shaft 43 and adapted to revolve therewith is a rubber roller 44. The upper ends of each of the hangers are journaled on an oscillatable shaft 45 as shown at 46. Located on the opposite ends of the shaft 45 are eccentrically located sockets 41 which are adapted to receive eccentrically located pins 48. These pins 48 are mounted eccentrically on each of the discs 49 journaled in a bore 50 on each of the side frame members 35. Formed integrally with each of the disc members 49 and adapted to be revolved thereby is a knob 5| for eccentrically adjusting the shaft 45 whereby the hangers 4! in the operation of regulating the position of the roller 44 with respect to the type in the type chase may be accomplished. These discs are adapted to be secured in adjusted position by set screws 52. Secured to the shaft 45 by means of screws 53 is a U-shaped handle bracket 54 which extends radially from the shaft and is provided with a handle 55 at a point adjacent its outer ends. For the purpose of encasing the rubber roller and its operative parts, a shield 56 may be placed thereon and in which the slots 5'! are located therein for the oscillatory movement of the handle.
Summarizing the operation of my improved printing device, let us assume that the desired type is secured in the chase M. The chase is mounted in its regular position in the main frame after which the printing ribbon 25 is drawn over the type secured to the intermittently actuated roller 26. Then the paper to be printed is placed upon the printing ribbon and the handle 55 is gripped and oscillated to the right in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When the handle is thus oscillated, the carriage is then moved to the right in the direction over the paper. Upon the actuation of the handle 55 in the direction to the right as viewed in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the eccentric movement of the shaft 45 about the opposite eccentric hearings or pins 28 will cause the hangers 4| to be lowered, thereby lowering the rubber roller 44 against the paper to be printed on the chase. In this connection it will be noted that by reason of the inclination as indicated at I8 on the type chase l4,
the rubberv roller will travel freely over the type chase so as to impress a perfect print upon the paper. At the conclusion of the printing stroke, the handle 55 is oscillated to the left for returning the carriage to its starting position and upon reverse movement of the handle, the hangers 4| will be lifted by the eccentric movement of the shaft 45, thereby raising the roller 44 from contact with the previously printed sheet. When the carriage returns to its normal starting position, the pawl 38 will engage one of the ratchet teeth on the ratchet wheel 28 so as to actuate the roller 25 and thereby slightly move the ribbon preparatory to printing the next sheet.
While in the above specification I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will of course be understood that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the following claim:
What I claim is my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A printing device comprising a main frame, a removable type chase mountedonsaidmain frame, a reciprocal carriagemounted on said main frame, a rubber roller journaled on said carriage and adapted to move over said chase by thereciprocation of said carriage, said chase having inclined strips at one end thereof for guiding and lifting said roller on to said chase, vertically movable bearings mounted on said carriage for supporting said roller, an oscillatable shaft mounted eccentrically on said carriage and connected to said bearings for raising and lowering said bearings, an oscillatable handle secured to said shaft for vertically moving said roller, and separate supporting and adjustable means for each end of said shaft for adjusting the position of said shaft in said carriage.
