MACHINE FOR PRINTING- TUBES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1921.
Application filed March 17, 1919. Serial No. 283,058.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FRnnLANn (Jonson, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Printing Tubes, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, that form part of the same.
The principal objects of the invention are, to effect a saving of time in the printing of collapsible tubes and to devise a printing machine which will enable the tubes being handled very rapidly and which will print them very accurately.
The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby a rotatable mandrel for holding the collapsible tubes is supported upon a carriage adapted to travel upon a frame to bring the tubes into rolling contact with a printing surface, and whereby the tube is carried clear of the printing surface on the return movement, and the print ing surface is re-inked.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention.

The frame 1 of the machine is of rectangular form supported upon legs 2., A carriage 3 is slidably mounted on the top of the frame and is formed of a pair of angle members 4 having the upwardly extending lugs 5 arranged midway of their length. These lugs are connected together by a cross bolt 6.
A frame 7 is pivotally mounted upon the bolt 6 and is provided with a laterally offset lug 8 extending rearwardly from one side of said frame and forming the bearing support for the rotatable mandrel 9.
A handle frame 10 is pivotally supported upon the bolt 6 between the pivotal supports of the frame 7 and a handle 11 is carried at the upward end thereof. 7
The mandrel 9 extends inwardly from the lug 8 back of the handle 11 and is unsupported at its outer end so that the open ended collapsible tube -may be placed thereon. I
A toothed rack 12 is secured to the top of the frame at the inner side of one of the angle members 4 of the carriage and a toothed pinion 13 is arranged upon the inner hed end of the mandrel to engage the too rack. y r
A spiral spring 14 is arranged to loosely surround the bolt 6 between the bearing lug support of the frame 7 and one end of the spring engages the frame, forcing it downwardly to maintain the pinion in operative engagement with the rack. V
A frame 15 similar to the frame 7 is formed with the lugs 16 rotatably encircling the cross bolt 6 and having the outwardly extending arms 17 projecting in a direction opposite to the lug 8 and in a substantially horizontal direction, said arms supporting the inking roller 18. y 7
A pin 19 carrying the inking roller projects beyond the sides of the arms 17 and is adapted to engage the stops to limit the downward movement of the roller. The op posite end of the spiral spring 14 engages the cross bar of the frame 15 to hold the inking roller downwardly. i V
A pivotal member20 is secured to one side of the carriage by the cap screw 21 and is formed with a notch 22 in which is located a rigid pin 23 secured in the side of the car- V extending arms of the handle frame,lconse- V quently the tilting movement of the handle frameon its pivotal support is limited by the stop pin 23.
A set screw-25 is threaded through the rearward end of the lug 8 of the pivotal frame 7 and extends downwardly to engage the top surface of the carriage, said screw being adjustably secured. a
A cam plate 26 is slidably mounted upon the carriage 3 being secured by a pair of cap screws 27 inserted in the side and extending through the slots 28 in the cam plate. r
The top portion of the cam plate is formed with a sloping surface 29 which is plate is moved forwardly to engage the set screw 25 it lifts the lug so as to move the mandrel pinion out of engagement with the rack. o
A link 30 is pivotally connected to the pivotal point of connection of the memberprevent the handle being tilted'toofarforward. , In the 'return' movement of the carriage the backward movement'of the handle tilts it upon its pivot operating the member and link 30 to move the cam plate clearof the set screw and allow the frame 7 to be sprung downwardly by the pressure of the spring so that the tube carried upon the mandrel will be brought into contact with the? face of the inked type. r j
At the forwardend of the machine is arranged an ink distributingplate 32 which is rotatably supported from the frame, the'spindle thereof extending downwardly" through a'sub frame 33; A ratchet wheel-343m secure'd to the spindle and a lever 35 is loosely mounted upon the spindle and "carries a ratchet idog 36'to engage the wheel 34.
' A lever 37 is pivotally supported froma bracket 38 arranged at the forward end of the machine and-its opposite end is connected withthe ratchet lever 35 by a link '39.
A bracket 40 is secure'dto the underside of the carriage 3 and extends inwardly beneath v the lever 37 having a pair of rollerxcontacts 41 adaptedto engage the lever. The'lever '37 is offset intermediate of its length so that I as the carriage is mpved forwardlytherollers engage the offset portion and swing the lever upon its pivot, thus operating the ratchet lever with each movement to rotate the inking plate.

There are no delicate adjustments to get out of order and all o'f'the parts are of a simple and strong construction to withstand thestrains of operating conditions. v

' the carriage in the opposit'e'direction to ala mandrel rotatably mounted on said pivotal frame, means for rotating said mandrel through the reciprocal movement of the carriage, a handle member pivotally supported on the carriage a member pivotally secured at the side of the carriage and having a limited movement, a link connecting said handle with said pivotal member, a plate slidably mounted on the carriage and having an inclined cam surface adapted to engage an extension from the pivotal mandrel frame, and a link connecting said slidable plate with the pivotal member operated by said handle.

A tube printing machine, comprising, a frame having parallel longitudinal sides, a carriage reciprocally mounted to slide on said frame, a stationary rinting surface arranged beneath said carriage, a toothed rack extending longitudinally of the frame, a mandrel frame pivotally supported on the carriage, a mandrel rotatably supported in said mandrel frame and having a toothed pinion adapted to engage said rack, spring means for holding said mandrel frame With the toothed pinion in engagement with the rack, a handle pivotally supported on said carriage separate from the mandrel frame, and means operated by said handle for lifting the pivotal mandrel frame to move the pinion clear of the rack.
