This invention relates to the printing or copying of music and like manuscript including the printing of any necessary letterpress and has for its object to provide a simple cheap and ellicient form of apparatus by which such copyingor printing may be readily and rapidly eliected by hand.
The invention consists in apparatus for printing or copying music or the like comprising in combination means for holding and positioning the paper or other material to be printed on, means for selecting any particular type from a type magazine or holder and conveying such selected type to the printing position and means for moving the selected type relatively to the paper or the like.
The invention also consists in apparatus of the above character having key-operated means for selecting and manipulating the type.
The invention also consists in apparatus of the above character in which the type magazinc or holder is movable relatively to the selecting device to enable any particular type to be selected for conveyance to the printing position.
The invention also consists in other details and arrangements hereinafter described or indicated.
My invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus;

Referring now to the drawingsin which like reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures, I provide my improved apparatus with a base plate 1, having suitforms of type ably located brackets 2 arranged to support a carriage 3 provided with segmentally formed members 4 adapted to support the material to be printed upon.
The carriage 3 is further provided with arms 5 and 6 between which is located an anvil strip '7 pivotally mounted to the arms 5 and 6, the strip 7 being capable of limited rotary movement within the limits of the two stops 8 and 9. The segmental members 4 are fixedly mounted on a spindle 10 provided with suitable bearings 11 and 12 attached to the carriage 3. A tail piece 14 rigidly mounted upon the spindle 10 functions with the member 18 engaging in a suitable slide 20 adapted to move within the guides 23 and to be operated by means of a lever 24, link 25, bell-crank 26 and link 27 whereby the operation of the lever 24 will cause the slide 20 to function within the guides 23 by which means the segmental members 4 carrying the material to be printed upon will assume any predetermined vertical position relatively to the printing means.
Handles 10 may also beprovi'ded to be operated directly by hand to adjust the vertical position of the segmental members 4.
The carriage 3 is further adapted to be laterally spaced by means of suitable mechanism (see also Figure 5) comprising a rack 28 provided upon the lower edge of the extension 30 of the carriage 3 adapted to be moved'in the direction of the arrow 28 under the action of a spring (not shown) the same, and
movement being controlled and regulated by means of a rocking plate 32 pivoted at 33 to the base plate l of the apparatus and adapted to oscillate thereon, a spring 3% being provided, to normally retain the rocking plate in the position shown.
The rocking plate 32 is provided with a fixed pawl. 35v and a sliding pawl 36 moving in a groove 37 provided in the rocking plate 32 against the action of a spring 38, a stop 40, adapted to. limit the movement 01 the sliding pawl 36 being also provided, the arrangement being such that on the rocking plate 32:being oscillated by means of the rod 42tl1e fixed pawl 35 is first withdrawn from engagement with the rack plate 28, the sliding pawl 36 thereupon coming into engage ment therewith and moving with the rack plate 28 until stopped by the end of the groove 37. By this means it will be seen that by changing-the position of the stop 49 relatively to the groove 37 the rack plate 28 can be moved through a definite predetermined distance whereby corresponding lateral movement is imparted to the carr' go 3 through the'rack 28, in conjunction with the spring (not shown), back spacing of the can riage being effected against the action of the spring by means of the pawl 43 pivoted up.- on the arm. 44, which is in turn pivoted at 45 to a fixed part of the base plate 1, and operated by any suitable manually actuated link or other mechanism.
The type bars (Figure l) are arranged in grooves provided in the segmental tray pivoted to the base plate 1 at and adapted to be rotated a definite ditsance according to the particular type which may be required, the arrangement being such that by pressure upon any one of the keys each and allot which are carried upon-levers pivoted to the spindle 56, the type in the segmental tray 50 corresponding to that indicated on the face of the key is adapted to be brought into a definite operativeposition relatively to the printing member 58.
For this purpose the various keys and their corresponding levers are adapted to be depressed through a definite uniform distance by, whichmeans one or the other of the tracker bar 5% is correspondingly depressed about its pivot 57 a distance dependent upon: the relative position or" the key lever 55, it being obvious that the tracker bar 54 will be depressed to a greater degret thenearer the key levers are to the tracker bar pivot; The ends of the two tracker bars 54 are provided'with inclined faces or cam members 60' adapted to operate a lever 61 pivotedat 63 carryingthe type tray 50, the lever 61 being provided with a fork 6% engaging a pin 65 provided on the arm 62 for the purpose.
Ina modification shown in Figure 6 the inclined faoes or cam members 60 are adepted to operate a member 68 pivoted at a point 69 forming the centre of oscilla io of a toothed segment 70 which in turn operates the pinion '51 to rotate the circular member 72 carrying the necessary type, it bemg obvious thatfa segmental type tray may be substituted for the circular member it dosirable, the gear ratio between scgi'nent 70 and the pinion 71 being modified accordingly.
A printing arm or member 58 pivoted at 72 is adapted to engage and grip thetype 73 when the latter has been brought into printing relationship therewith; the arcuate moven'icnt oi the member causing a pin 7 attached to the sleeve 74* to move forward in the cam groove 76 whereby the lip 77. will be caused to grip the edge 73 of the type while the latter is being raised into the printing position.

In this case also the type is shown in three rows and the lit fulcrum of the printing member is adapted to be raised or lowered into corresponding positions within the slot by means of the I said plate being arranged to slide over the ratchet wheel 109 through a definite, but varying distance, such distance being determined by the selected key operating through links 106 and 107 connected with the keys. It will be seen that the ratchet wheel 109 is thereby adapted to be rotated a distance which is regulated by the relative movement of the pawl 116 and the plate 108 the relative movement of the two working part-s being definitely determined by the particular key employed. The ratchet wheel 109 is mounted on a spindle 110 having at its outer extremity a gear wheel 111 which is adapted to operate a rack member 117 attached to or pivoted upon the member 20.
Figs. 14 and 15 show a modification of this device in which the pawl member 116 masked by the moving plate 108 is adapted to directly operate the rack plate 117.
If found desirable, such a device may also operate to provide traversing or lateral movement to the carriage (see Figs. 19 and 20) by substituting a fiat rack member 160 for the ratchet wheel, as in'Figs. 1 1- and 15, having its outer extremity forked or formed in two parts 161 and 162 provided with suitable rack teeth adapted to gear with two pinions 163 and 164 mounted upon the 8X" tremities of a fixed transverse spindle 165, the inner edges of the two pinions' being formed with engaging right and left handed clutch members 166 and 167 providedupon their inner faces. A worm wheel 170 of suitable pitch is mounted upon the spindle in a central position and fixed relatively thereto. the worm wheel being provided on its outer faces with clutch members 171 and 172, either of which is adapted to engage its clutch member upon its corresponding pinion. The ratchet teeth upon the clutch members are adapted to drive in opposite directions, sufficient movement being provided in the pinions whereby.either might be drawn into or out of engagement with its corresponding clutch member to drive the worm wheel 170 fixedly mounted upon the trans-- verse spindle. The worm may be adapted to engage with a rack member 174: formed upon the base of the carriage 3 by which means the operation of a suitable key will cause the carriage to move laterally through a definite distance according to which key is employed, means being provided whereby either pinion may be clutched to the worm wheel, and movement of the carriage in either direction thereby effected.
Figures 7, 9 and 10 show a modification of the type carrier in which the type carrying member comprises three superimposed tiers of type 117, 118, 119 in which the type are adapted to be brought into operative position in a manner similar to that already described. In this case however in addition to the tracker bar member 5a, to vertically locate the type upon any one tray a pivotally mounted forked arm 120 supporting the printing member 58 is adapted tobe raised by means of a cam member 121 pivoted at a point 122, for the purpose of bringing it to a correct lever to operate a particular type carrying tray.
Acentrally located aperture 119 is provided on the upper and intermediate type trays through which the type operating member 58 is adapted to operate when removing a type bar from either of the two lower trays.
In a modification of the device shown in F1gures 16 and 17 the type are adapted to be carried upon the periphery of a drum 123 which is adapted to be rotated into a suitable position relatively to the printing member by means of segments 124, 125, pivoted at points 126, 127 and adapted to be operated through a distance depending upon the key lever of the particular type or character to be employed, the segments being adapted to mesh with a pinion 130 mounted on a spindle 131 provided with suitable brackets 132, 133 and adapted to carry the type drum 123.
In the construction shown, the type are removably positioned in the drum 123 by means of pins 145 provided upon their lower surface and are each further providedwith inwardly projecting tapered tongues 135 adapted to be gripped by the two jaw members 136 provided at the outer extremity of the printing member.
In the operation of this modification the printing key 79 upon being depressed against the action of the spring 137 operates the crank member 138 and link member 139 to actuate the sleeve 1 10 pivoted and slidably mounted upon the pedestal 1 11, the
outward movement of the sleeve 140 causing the projections on' the aw members 136 to engage corresponding dimples on the tongues 135 of the. type. Further movement of the link member 139 then withdraws the type 135 from the drum 123, the movement being continued to cause the sleeve 140to further rotate about its pivot Lil and thereby cause the type135 held in the jaws 136 to be brought into printing relationship with the paper.

In the arrangement shown in Figure 18 the type bars are located on a square section spindle 1 0 mounted upon bearings 151 and adapted to be operated by means of a hand-wheel 152 whereby the type bars may be rotated to ensure the particular row of type is in its correct posit-ion relatively to the jaw members 185 and 136 upon the printing member, the correct lateral position for the particular type bar required being ensured by sliding the type carriers 151 in an axial direction, the amount of lateral movement being controlled by the depression of tracker bars through the medium oi the key levers as hereinbefore described. In this case the printing member is operated by means of a slide 152" provided with suitable rollers 153 whereby the jaws 186 may function to grip the type bar and raise it in its operative position. The drum is provided with a strip 155 having a flat surface over which the material to be printed upon is positioned during the operation of printing, the drum 15 1 being further adapted to be raised into the three relative positions necessary when the three type characters are formed upon one type bar, said raising means comprising a lever 156 pivoted at 157 and connected to an extension of the cylinder support 158, stops 159 being provided on a member 160 for this purpose. This anvil strip 155 also ensi. es that the material is in a plane surface when in its printing position.
The drum is further provided upon its outer surface with a tired or removable layer of vulcanite, rubber composition, cardboard or other suitable material adapted to facilitate the making of a clear printed ime' pression upon the paper or like sheet; longitudinally extending members 176 and 177 being provided in the construction shown, adapted to co-operate with clamps 178 upon the. spindle 179 for the purpose of fixedly securing one end 01 the packing material, and ratchet men'iber 180 upon the other member adapted to be rotated for the purpose ot tightening the other extremity of H aching material.

It is to be understood however that the invention is not to beconfined to the foregoing details of construction which are given by way of example only as it will be obvious that various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention and various mechanical equivalents employed to elfect the necessary movements of the apparatus as may be found necessary to meet any particular practical requirements which the invention may be called on to fulfil.
Having now described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. Apparatus for printing or copying music or the like comprising in combination a magazine containing a plurality of types, a plurality of keys; corresponding to said types and a pivoted lever for each of said keys upon which said keys are mounted, a pivotally mounted lever arranged beneath the key levers and positioned substantially at right angles thereto, said key levers being adapted to be manually depressed through a definite predetermined distance to give a definite but varying deflection to the last mentioned pivoted lever, a pivoted printing member, an inclined cam member, arranged at the extremity of the last mentioned pivoted lever, means actuated by said cam member for rotating the type magazine and adapted to move the type magazine through a definite and varying distance depending upon the key operated to bring the selected type into functional relationship with said pivoted printing member.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 in.
which the pivoted printing member is combined with means such that the first movement of said member automatically causes the-same to positively engage a selected type for removal from the magazine.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the pivoted printing member is provided with cam operated means forgripping a selected type for removal from the magazine.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the pivoted printing member is provided with gripping means comprising jaws adapted to co-operate with suitable extensions provided upon the type for the purpose of removing a selected type from the magazine.
5. Apparatus according to claim 1 having combined therewith a key-operated cam member for. effecting movement of the pivoted printing member.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the pivoted printing member is capable of adjustment for the purpose of selecting a particular type character from a number of type characters of a single type-bar.
7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 including a movable carriage provided with se'gmentally formed members adapted to support the material to be printed upon, means for adjusting the position of said segmental members, arms secured upon said carriage, and an anvil strip pivotally mounted between said arms.
8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 including a movable carriage for supporting the material to be printed upon and means for actuating said carriage comprising a rocking plate carrying one fixed and one adjustable pawl, and a rack member on said carriage adapted to be engaged by said pawls, whereby the carriage is adapted to be spaced laterally through a definite predetermined distance.
