it may spring back nntler the impulse of the L spring' to the printing position, t'nus producing a succession or imprints suoli, ior 1nstance5 as those shown in the foregoing' examples, tlne imprints being manie et, regular intervals in the movement of tlie'esrrisge. 'Uf Course. it shonltl be understood ilmty these imprints are made, in rapid succession by e sinole movement oi' the carriage from leftto rignt, :incl that the number of imprints or the length oi the line depends upon tire ex tent. oi' movement of the carriage While presiBS - to be vibrated thereby.
thm-,e hereinbefore described bear the same reference numerals and the construction and t operation of the device is the Same as that f previously descriliied exceptthat a bracket i 4T is detachably and adjustablysecured to i the top plate by a :screw 48 whiclris received in a threaded opening in the top plate and bears against a washer 49 to clamp the i bracket in place. The screw passes through i an enlarged opening 50 .in the bracket so that an adjustment oi" the bracket may bc readily eti'ected in order to bring the pinion 43 1,roperly into mesh with the eacapement pinion :223, ln this construction the screw 42 instead of taking into a threaded opening in an integral projection on the hearing is received in a threaded, opening in the forward end ot' the bracket -t-T.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4- and 5 the devices ot' my invention are in the nature of attachments which can be readily applied to existing forms of typewriting machines without changing the structural features of said machines.'
From the foregoing description it will be Seen that 1 have provided simple and elticient means operable independently of suc-t cessive key operations and controlled by the movement of the carriage for effecting an operation of a printing instrumentality to produce a line of imprints. and that by this constructionmuch time and labor is saved over the method hereinbefore employed ot' effecting a separate actuation of the linger key :For each imprint.
It will also be understood that the carriage receives a continuous movement in its return to the right; that it is this continuous movement which actuates the type carrier 20 to effect. a succession of imprints; and that at this time the carriage is moved by hand and therefore constitutes a device movable by hand to effect a movement of a toothed dcvice 45, or one having cam teeth. and thereby effect a succeseion ot' printing movements of the type carrier.
i Various changes maybe made without dcparting from the spirit and scopeoiL` my invention.
