B. A. BROOKS.
TYPE WRITER.
Patented Mar. 6, 1888.
W M J v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON A. BROOKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
.. TYPE-WRITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,095, dated March 6, 1888,
Application filed December 24, 1886. Serial No. 222.496. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON A. BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-\Vriters, of which the following is a description in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any one skilled in the art to which. my invention belongs to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My present invention relates to type-writers and the means of inking the printing-typesv thereof; and it consists of a movablc'inkingpad or roll which is held against or pressed upon or rolled over the face of such printingtype, and is then moved out of the way to permit the types to print upon the platen.
The drawing illustrates a side elevation of parts of a type-writing machine, including an inking device embodying the principles ofmy invention,printing-types,and a platen. Other parts of the machine are broken away or omitted.
The following is a brief description of the drawing:
O are a series of bell-crank levers carrying types a Z) c. This bell-cranktype-bar is pivoted to a vibrating or oscillating support. A. These supports are set in the arc of a circle and are pivoted to fixed supports h. The supports A are provided with stop projections g.
A is one of a series of key levers fulcruined at q, the rear ends of which are severally connected to and operate the type-levers by means of rods 6.
y is a stop-piece formed into steps 1, 2, and 3, having a vertical movement imparted to it by suitable mechanism. .(Not shown.) When the stop y is in the position shown and the key-lever is depressed, the projection g is pressed against the step 1, and the type-bar OD, by means of the rod 6, is thrown down to print the letter a. When the stop y is raised to the second posltion, the projection g is thrown forward against the step 2 and the letter I) is printed, and so on.
My present form. of type-writer is designed to print directly from the types without the use of an inkingribbon, and in the drawing I have illustrated one means of inking the types for this purpose, but other means of accomplishing the same result substantially may be employed without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention, the essence of the invention consisting of a movable pad operated by suitable mechanism, which causes it at intervals to approach and recede from the face of the printingiype to thoroughly ink it, and then to retire to a position where it will not obstruct the operation of printing.
In the annexed drawing, 0 is a pad or roller, which may be supplied with ink by intermediate rollers or in any well known manner. Itis connected by the bent rod 0 with a rotary cam, H, against which the end of the rod G bears, which rod is pivoted to the frame at s, and is actuated by akeylever arm, D. If desirable, this lever may be connected to the key, by means of which spacing between words is accomplished, or to a key controlling any other operative partof the machine. Each time the key D is depressed the end of the lever G, riding up the cam H, causes the inking roller or pad to pass over or be pressed against the face of the printingtypes, and when the key Dis released the force of the spring Z, connected to said cam, causes the inking roller to return to the position illustrated in the drawing.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a type-writing machine, the types thereof combined with an inking pad and a key-lever by which it is operated, substantially as described.
2. In a type-writing machine, the types thereof combined with an inking-pad con-' nected to and operated by a vibrating bar, 0, for the purpose of pressing said pad against the face of the type intermittently, substantially as described.
3. Ina type-writing machine,an.inking-pad, 0, combined with a revolving cam, H, provided with a spring, connecting-rod O, and a key-lever, substantially as described.
BYRON A. BROOKS.
